So, my little brother's turning eight on September the 18th. He is really into spies/spy gear etc. and so we're buying him a big bag full spy stuff. The bag is a very simple black rucksack with three pockets including the zip one on the front.

So far we have the following as a rough list:
    -waterproof notebook and cover
    -compass
    -cam cream
    -FAK
    -torch
    -paracord
    -sunglasses (possibly with rear-view mirrors)
    -recording pen
-watch (think James Bond on this one)
-and anything else you think of...

Hit me with all your ideas for more gear and stuff. My parents aren't too big on getting him a knife/toy gun etc.

Magnifying glass. Or if he already has one, maybe one of those pocket microscopes.

You've got a little time, so that's good. The International Spy Museum in Washington, DC has an online store you might want to check out. It looks like you have a great starter list already, but there are several goodies at the museum store that my grandkids really liked. To name a few: the hollow coin, spy dog tags, the invisible ink pen, a Spy vs. Spy T-shirt, secret message decoder ring, special agent badge, etc. There was also a book called "Spy School" that one of them really liked, but I don't remember what the reading level was. Anyway, I think you've time to order from the store and have things shipped to the UK before the birthday. But, even if you choose not to order I think just browsing the museum store's website will give you further ideas. Good luck!

Footnote to something: this is a really interesting museum: if you visit the US, it is well worth the trip. The adult books section is so comprehensive that real 'spooks' often shop there.

In a similar vein to what FWB mentioned: looking on the UK's eBay site there are many cool kids spy things in the "Toys and Games" section. Just use "Spy" as your search word.

A mirror on a (telescoping) stick. Or build a periscope yourself, with him.

Most of the ideas I had where already mentioned in this thread. Maybe walkie talkie radios? Fake id? (Nothing that looks real of course, but the novelty type stuff that Erik help him create his secret identity) anything with secret or hidden compartments out with hidden features

I would say some para cord. You can teach him how to make a bracelet himself. Then teach him other uses for it.

I was a spy in a former life. No, not really, I just went through a phase in my childhood where I wanted to be one though. I would suggest that you get a SAK for him, I was eight when I got my first knife, so this might be a good time for that as well (I'll leave that up to you and your family though). Also, even if he's not a reader, buy him a book on codes and cryptology. They're a blast to look through and they can turn a non reader into one, and even create in interest in math for some as well. Some titles I would highly suggest are "Codes, Cyphers, Secrets and Cryptic Communication" by Fred B. Wrixon, and, if you can find it as its out of print, "The Codebreakers" by David Kahn. They've both got lots of pictures, and tons of Code Keys for him do share with his super secret buddies. But if you don't take any of my advice, at least take this one piece: BUY HIM THE BOOK SPYOLOGY! Its a big hardcover book that's written as the journal of a CIA Spy behind the Iron Curtain and is full of hidden codes, secret messages, hidden compartments and TOP SECRET FILES. Buried in the story is an actual mystery that the reader can solve by using the codes, hidden messages and invisible maps etc. that are hidden inside. It is one of my most treasured possessions and memories of my childhood. It's even got a code wheel built into the cover of the book. I would willing to bet you money that he would love it.
No matter what you end up getting him, I would love to hear what he thinks. Great idea!

In the end, we got him a fairly military kit; a spy book, waterproof notepad, cam cream etc. I gave him a torch and we got an enormous camera watch with every dial under the sun. He had a helluva time.

But... In exactly eight days time, I will be turning 15 years old. So what are they all going to get me?
