Cheers BC. The older Pelikan models have held up super well over the generations. They can easily perform another faithful lifetime of fountain pen service to an owner. A couple of models from other not inexpensive brands have gone to pieces and given up the ghost on me over recent years.
Well, that time should be comin' sometime soon... Workin' on cleaning up/out/organizin' stuff in the abode, and along with feeling that I really don't need to look for other/more/new/shiny writing instruments, at least for a spell (although some others are still to come from ks projects), I think that puttin' the group together to see what all I have/use and can maybe send to good homes might yield a pic or few. Might group 'em by faves of each style (like capped, pocket-size, and differentiated by the various mechanisms used to extend/retract the ink cartridge), or by creator/brand, and maybe by material... Anyway, like the previous idea to share a detail/feature of the 1st iteration of the HoverPen, from more of a shot from above, here's a shot of the Mercator Nominal pen's cap w/ its rocket-inspired legs:

oke, my post was certainly not intended to be for comparison to anybody else. Any postings from the forum that relate to writing instruments are appreciated by me. I continue to learn and enjoy about what all other people use and or collect. If any experience including mistakes and failings earned from my time using and collecting writing instruments can benefit others then that's an enjoyable bonus.
HF’s TWSBI Vac Mini Review 220517 The short conclusion is … If you want a good quality, capable fountain pen with excellent ink capacity and use, the TWSBI Vac Mini should be on your shortlist. This is my review of the TWSBI Vac Mini fountain pen. SPECIFICATION & BRIEF DESCRIPTION The exact specification and what I paid for it are; TWSBI Vac Mini Clear Fountain Pen with Extra Fine nib The price was ~USD$55 (AUD$73) shipped to Australia. Shipping from Singapore was gratis. THE PROS … Filling mechanism (see Conclusion & Discussion below) Fit and finish is excellent Seems robust with substantive material, not thin and potentially weak Clear (“demonstrator”) acrylic material allows for instant ink fill assessment EF nib writes with good reliable flow EF nib has some nice expressive flex when desired. This is nothing like the earlier pre 1940’s era flexible nibs but is certainly no centre punch nib designed for those who have only ever known ball point pens Clip is discrete and functional Comes with some spares seals and a service tool Smoothly faceted barrel is more resistant to rolling away than without THE CONS … Need for a custom travelling ink pot (see Conclusion & Discussion below) to max out the fill quickly and easily. This is the smaller vacuum filling version of the pen by TWSBI. Although the size is perfect for my use case it may not be for others. One option is to buy the larger version. CONCLUSION & DISCUSSION The reason I chose this pen with an Extra Fine nib was because of the intended use. Namely for frequent note taking. It wasn’t purchased for its irresistible aesthetics. The EF nib means one would get more words per volume of ink compared to broader nibs and most importantly the filling mechanism has two ink chambers. The two chambers are the main ink storage reservoir and the seperate chamber directly behind the nib feed. This is not a new setup for the fountain pen world. It has been used in the earlier part of the 20th century by Onoto/De La Rue, Wahl (Wahl Eversharp) et al and later by current companies like Visconti. The two uber advantages for my use are the ability to just about use every drop of ink filled into the system for writing without burp, farts or other distasteful and potential embarrassing losses or stains. Also, one can retreat ink back into the main storage reservoir which means it becomes less prone to losing ink from the nib when bumped around or subject to changes in pressure. For example I could drain the small chamber and keep ink in the pen and jump on a plane or drive from sea level to a mountain pass without fear of opening a pen that’s spewed its guts. The vacuum piston filler system compared to other filling systems has the advantage of larger ink capacity. Without the secondary chamber behind the nib feed it is less likely that the user can utilise all the carried ink. Why? Well when ink is used it is replace by ambient air. If the air in the main reservoir has a change in pressure to the outside ambient air some ink is likely to be forced out. The greater the air in the main reservoir the greater the chance of a burp, fart or gut spill as noted earlier. The circumstances that can precipitate such a mishap are for example; the user’s hand heating up the pen barrel which in turn heats up the internal air which changes it’s pressure in the fixed volume; going to a higher altitude by say driving up a mountain or being in an aircraft cabin (yes commercial cabins are pressurised but invariably the pressure is less than at takeoff). Having the two chambers is an excellent solution to this problem by closing off the main reservoir and allowing the user to choose and control when it is vented. It isn’t always easy to fill the vacuum fillers to the brim without some friggin around or a custom filling pot. Although I’ve got the custom filling container, which nicely doubles as a travelling ink pot, filling the pen substantially enough without the pot was pretty easy and straight forward albeit not 100%. So if you’re a stickler for always going full hog then get the filling container. Here is a pic of my TWSBI Vac 20A Ink Bottle. (not my pic) It cost me USD$13.50 (AUD$18) and was shipped gratis with the pen. It works as advertised but just make sure the threaded joints are snugly closed to avoid mishaps during handling and the filling process. I saw one report where the user had difficulty posting the cap as it would always cross thread. That hasn’t happened or even come close so is a non issue for me. Overall I’ve zero regrets with my purchase and hope this review is of some interest my edc FP toting friends.
