Hey guys, I’m looking for a new EDC knife, I like the ergonomics and look of the Ontario RAT 1&2, but the steel quality is not the best. On the other hand, I really dig some of the Benchmade knives, but they can get really pricey. Any good knife recommendations? Tnx. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I'm a huge spyderco supporter. They can get pricey too, but in my opinion you do get what you pay for. They've always been comfortable in my hand, and the quality of materials is there too. Light weight depending on what you go with and plenty of blade shapes and styles.
I have and abuse the crap out of the standard Rat 1 and I promise there is little wrong with the steel in these? Not exotic or "High Performance" on paper but easily sharpened and hard working in the hand all the way and a deal for the price I think.
I agree, but I also think this depends on the needs of the user. I have owned and EDCed blades with cheaper steels like AUS-8 and I was not impressed by how often I needed to sharpen them. The sharpening itself was quick and easy, but when I had to cut down half a dozen of cardboard boxes on a day in the office I went home with a dull blade. That was a little too soft for my liking. There's no need for me to carry CPM S110v, but a little edge retention is nice to have. D2 is something I consider decent enough for EDC. Okay'ishly easy to sharpen and good enough edge retention to get through multiple demanding tasks before resharpening is necessary. I know people that want a blade to be razor sharp for as long as possible through as much abuse as possible without any maintenance. When you let professionals do the grinding and just use the blade, a better steel pays off in the long run.
My RAT II is AUS-8, indeed easily sharpened, but poor edge retention. I’m realistic, and I do know that you can’t use the knife and keep it sharp forever without sharpening. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Let’s pray together, as always when this question was asked: Budget Size preference Application Auto, assisted, flipper, oho, slip joint Preferred lock Prefers handle material Weight concerns Sent from my Glade Air Freshener
Well maybe you should have mentioned in the beginning that you ALREADY had a Rat?!? Great knife for what it costs and no apologies for that at all. I think that maybe you just need to get a "Grip". And I mean that literally.
Budget- up to 100$ Size - about the size of the rat I Application - mainly cutting open boxes, packages and the occasional apple. Preferred lock - frame lock/slip joint Preferred handle material - G10 No weight concerns Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Sorry about that I have almost no complaints besides the edge retention. About getting a grip... in Israel we don’t have stores that sell quality knives, at least not that I know of. Those that do sell - sell poor quality ones. That’s way I want to get as much information online and order one online. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Yeah I meant a Griptillian. Find a Pre-Owned one for a decent discount over a new one,you can usually easily sell it again if you are not happy. Pick whichever Steel you think will be an upgrade for you. There is a reason they are so often recommended.
Thank you. Did you look into Kershaw or Massdrop? Some Spydercos, like the Chaparral could work too. What else but the Rat appeals to you? Let’s narrow it down. Then you can get pros and cons for them, ok? Sent from my Glade Air Freshener

Check out the Manly Peak. This should fit your dimensions. OHO, Backlock, deep carry pocket clip, G10 Scales and it is pretty affordable. You get to choose between the okay version with the D2 blade, the decent version with the CPM154 blade or the stellar one with the S90V blade. I own the smaller Wasp, and it is a great knife.
