If you go that route, let us know how they work out for you - I'm so broke, I have to live vicariously.
Take your organizer with you to a thrift store and buy individual pieces of stainless place settings that fit.
I'm right there with you on the "shoe-string budget" program, however if I start bringing more lunches from home, it'll pay for itself in time. My only thought was that snowpeak makes rock-solid stuff and hopefully this would be the last set i'd have to buy for a pretty long time! The MP cocoon though is a pretty good idea as well, I'm just hoping to pop a little MSR Alpine Salt & Pepper shaker, and maybe a couple of Alpine Spice bottles (one with sugar for my coffee), and probably a couple of ketchup packets, and a soy sauce packet.
Hi - Please tell me what the "MP" in MP cocoon stands for (not seeing that in the Acronym thread I search often as I'm new here)? Thanks!
I don't own then myself, but there's a Chinese company called "Fire Maple" that make titanium knives/forks/spoons. They are about 133mm (5.2in) long and you can pick them up on eBay for about $10 per item including shipping - less if you buy all three at once. I like the look of them - they've got kind of a Sci-Fi shape - but haven't bought them as I don't have a need for them. I'd also look at a "Hobo Knife" (as Metropolicity and GibbsRule9 suggested) from either Case or Ka Bar - they're both jackknives that split into three pieces (knife, fork, spoon). The Ka Bar seems to have a larger spoon, which would put it in the lead for me. For myself, I just bought a folding stainless steel fork off TinyDeal.com for $3.50 including postage - but it hasn't arrived yet, so I don't know if it's any good.
Hey freddo, MP stands for Maxpedition And i'll def. look into both of those Jon, although I'm honestly not a super big fan of the "hobo knife" concept in truth, just doesn't appeal to me. Plus being on campus, i need something preferably that doesn't look like a pocket knife if i'm going to be eating with it. The other problem i could foresee would be food potential for food, etc. to gum up the mechanisms inside (i don't always have time to rinse stuff off well). I found a nice pic by viix who has a mini-organizer and a snowpeak spork which is approx. the same length as the 3 piece set, and it looks like it'll barely fit. I messaged him and hopefully he'll get back to me on how well it fits in there, and that should help give me a rough estimate on how well the utensil set will fit! Thanks for all the replies and suggestions though everyone! Forgot how much I love this community!
I forgot to make mention of what setup I myself use for the EDC utensils. A LMF titanium "spork", along with a fixed blade knife, without scales (blackjack necker). I like the seperate fork and spoon ends of the LMF, and got the Ti version after trying the plastic. The plastic one showed some stress marks after a year. The fixed blade is super easy to clean in the sink, and when coworkers see me cutting up lunch with it they become more comfortable with it being around.
I have one of the anodized aluminum long form sea to summit spoons. Great for eating out of a bag or for soup / cereal with milk. Also have the Snow peak sport. Bombproof. Both of the above are highly recommended. I had a few light my fire plastic sporks, but they all broke in half. I would not buy any plastic utensils. Metal lasts a lifetime.
I have a couple of the ti long spoons - I love those things, but I would only carry them camping where I expect to eat out of a long bag or need a travelling cooking spoon. It isn't practical, for me, to haul one around daily.
I have multiple sporks, just because I think they are cool, but for practicality, I second the Micro Bites. Small ,lightweight, can bring them on a plane, have a hole at the end so you can hang them from a caribiner and have a spatula surface on the knife that is great for spreading cream cheese on bagels. The two utensils snap together face inside, so they stay pretty clean on their own. These also fit nicely in a pocket organizer along with a camping salt and pepper shaker, some wipes, and individual dental floss packets and breath mints.
This Christmas, I’ve done something I wanted to do since I read about it: Somehow it seems there’s a rumour in the US that in Germany we hang a little gherkin in the tree, and whoever finds it first gets an extra present. Nobody does that here, except me this year. So my brother got a red LMF spork.
My Mom actually gave us a gherkin ornament several years ago and we have started that tradition ever since. We try and keep some of our German traditions alive. (not the horrid ones of course!)
Ah, with “ornament” you meant this decoration stuff. I actually found there’s a german Wikipedia article about this gherkin stuff. They say as well that in the US they tell it’s a german tradition, but nobody knows it here except of probably “reimported from the US” occasions. I’ve never seen such a glass gherkin here, too, and the one I used was freshly harvested out of the jar and hung with a bent paper clip. That’s what we all carry a multitool for, don’t we?
Yes! It is prob an Americanized tradition. But man, we need some kind of link to our forefathers, even if it is b.s. Either way having a pickle on our Xmas tree is always a conversation starter at our holiday parties!!!
