Perusing aluminum capsules I came across this thread

    http://www.britishblades.com/forums/showthread.php?t=60837

I've got several old minimaglites- AA and AAA

I wanted something that would fit in a pen holder loop and decided to give the AAA a go. I wanted to store a sparklite and several tinderquicks

as turns out the sparklite is just a little large to fit into the maglite- I used a cut off wheel on a dremel (cut at the bottom of the upper threads) and then a small sanding drum to enlarge the aluminum body (upper portion). I went to Ace Hardware and found some 1/2" caps that fit perfectly (they are very snug- waterproof snug :))

they also have plastic caps that would snap in nicely if you wanted to seal one end completely (I couldn't do that as the sparklite would go be the lower threads)- you could make a capsule any length (cutting from the top) snap in a plastic cap (little epoxy to be sure of the seal) and then load from the bottom thread piece

the little aluminum bodies are pretty light- the AAA one w/ both caps weighs 0.3 oz

the thread shows a fire steel secured in the bottom cap- looking at it- it would be pretty easy to do- you'd still have some room for some tinder as well

body cut w/ sparklite and tinders

loaded and ready to go :)

you can cut them down to any size

Nice job. Now I wish I hadn't thrown out a couple of them a few years ago.

interesting mod, I have two tubes that are just gathering dust...Someone on CPFM had aluminum screw caps, I'll try to find'em...Ok here they are AA mini-mag caps, but I'm not sure if he's still selling'em.

nifty :) I had to open mine up beyond the thread or the sparklite wouldn't have fit (it's narrower towards the bulb end)- if you had something less narrow in mind- that little cap would allow to put it back to "stock"- of course you couldn't shorten it either

I saw someone post up a little tiny one (maybe 1.5" in total length)-looked pretty neat

don't know, you might be able to find some derlin or plastic

mcmaster-carr.com is a good place to look for oddball stuff (you may have to sort through a bunch stuff before you find it- it's a BIG place)

WOW! I would have never thought of this but this is an great idea! O0 You could so many useful things in the big "C" and "D" cell ones. You could probably make a "Survival Tube". Kind of like the new generation of Altoids tin survival kits, but with Mag-Lites! :roof:

This will be a fire kit, complete with tinder, firesteel, fatwood and PJCB. But for now it holds matches and cotton balls.
A waterproof, nukeproof, crushproof firekit (or survival kit or whatever)

approx specs: 5" long x 1" wide. Usable space inside is about 4.25" x just under 1".
