That is an ambitious rescue project. Hounds are tough to make into good house pets, but they'll be the best burglar alarm you ever have.

Hounds are definitely not for everyone. My 65lb lap basset is worth the trouble.

We had a basset when we first got married. Hardest dog I ever housebroke. He was a rabbit hunting machine, as long as the snow wasn't to deep. I guess if my family jewels were dragging in the snow I would lose interest too.

We don't have a dog for the purpose of home defense...however he is here so WTH. This is Porkchop our rescued pit. He is about 70 lbs and while intimidating to any possible intruder he would probably just wag you to death.

Thanks to everyone for making this such a nice thread. Lots of nice pictures. I don't have any good pictures of my new "puppy", but I did try to snap a quick shot of him just now to post. This is my 7 month GSD with flying nun ears. So far, I couldn't be happier with him. He is a great dog. In the picture, I'm on the floor with him, and he just noticed the cat coming through. The flash caused the picture to be washed out, so you can't see his colors well, but he is a black and tan color.

I totally agree with you. Mine has sent the UPS man running a few times with just her mighty bay. She's a gentile giant.

This is Betty, she will bark if she decides to wake up. She usually just gets me up to go check it out and then goes back under her blanket. If the burglar does happen to knock, she will bark.

I don't think that my dogs can be "home security dogs " at all. They are bread eater and all day sleeping dogs! :)

She is a beautiful friend but I think she wanted to eat the tree cutter tonight. One thing I never have to worry about is sleeping in or anyone hurting my wife while Anne is alive.

Here are our two. Not necessarily security dogs, but I think the chocolate would defend the home. She has a mean bark. The black would probably follow her lead. They have been trained not to bark unless someone knocks on the door/steps on the porch. They are also trained not to jump on the sill.

Both are labs, the chocolate is an American Lab and the black is an English and was rescued at four weeks. We had some issues to overcome with her because she missed some of the needed 'pack' time to learn appropriate behavior. She has turned into a wonderful dog.

Picture of my current dog, Loretta. She's a springer/golden cross. She is a lousy watchdog. She sleeps sounder than any dog I've owned. But she is hell on rats. She's killed 14 in the 5 years I've lived here.

Appreciate the GSD pictures. Still miss mine after all these years.

I have a 135lb male APBT and a 70lb female APBT. Just the fact he is bigger than most thieves is enough. I think he would only attack if we, the human members of the family, were in danger. They are 2 of the most loyal dogs i have ever had and do well with kids as i have a 1 yo grand daughter and she does what she wants and the dogs just seem to understand she is not to be harmed. But i have shown my GD what not to do to a pet, pull ears, kick, choke, you know all the things lids with out pets do as soon as they are around pets LOL

Our dog is part of our of our security system, but mainly as a sentry (my avatar is him wearing his EDC).
