If I can't do the calculation in my head, I'll use the phone, work Blackberry, or my GeekWatch.
Yep! I always have a small 8 digit in my EDC bag but it's due for a change as it has no square root funtion. On my desk I have a scientific calculator with functions I no longer remember the use of and others I have never even seen before. In the winter when I wear a jacket I have a giveaway dating back to when the euro came in it has a separate function for currency rates which is handy when traveling.
TI-83 Plus - on my desk - favorite work calculator
HP-33s - in my desk - I don't like it, but I had to get it for a professional exam
HP-20s - favorite field calculator - this one goes in my back ocket when I'm out in the field
My go-to calculator is an HP42s. I've been using HPs for so many years that I sometimes do my math in reverse polish. My wife has the 12c, but I'm probably the only financial type on the planet who can't stand it. Unfortunately there aren't many other RPN financial calculators out there any more.
I always carry two. One on my Palm Centro and the circular slide rule bezel on my trusty Seiko SND253.
No. I do it in my head. When I'm in line I like calculating my total and having correct change ready in the rare instance I use cash.
I am a computer science student and I carry a scientific calculator around in my bag. I have a graphing one too, but the scientific one is good enough for what I need.
It does far more than what I expected when I bought it. For example the screen is all dot matrix rather than the regular figure 8 that can show different legs. It can do SAE to metric conversions as well as matrix operations up to 3x3. A far cry from the one I bought in the mid-90s which I've long lost.
The only time I have EDCed a calculator was when I was younger I used to have one of those digital watches with a built in calculator.
My Iphone has a calculator, so no.
I usually don't EDC a calculator, because I have on both my phones that function. However I do have 3 cheap pocket calculators; plus one built in my document portfolio which has a solar battery and a Fraction FX 82 LB scientific which I seldomly use.
Bottom line is no.Although it would be a good idea, since it is more uncomfortable to use a mobile phone for this.
Yes, I carry a Casio SL-100LCasio SL-100L in my Jumbo Maxped. It was $5 at Walmart.
To answer the topic header .... I do now! ;D
No. Because there's a calculator function in my Mobile phone. =) Allows me to do simple calculation.
Currently using Nokia 2600.
I been carry a Casio SL-300LC for years for work its Solar and Battery powered and I have never changed the battery. I travel 60 percent of the time these days.
My phone has one so yes
I use the one on my phone - Blackberry Curve.
ditto - BB curve. used to carry dedicated calc in briefcase for years though...
Re: Do you EDC a calculator ?
My phone has a calculator but I've never used it in anger. For me, the margin between stuff that I can easily do in my head, or on paper, and stuff that requires something quicker/more advanced than a simple phone calculator seems pretty narrow. Since I have a desk job, I'll usually use a computer.
Of course, I have a couple of slide-rules put back for rebuilding civilisation after the bird-flu/zom bie/etc apocalypse.
(Hmm, why won't it let me use the Z-word?)
For various reasons, please see here.
Re: Do you EDC a calculator ?
Ah, it all makes sense now.
Maybe I should sharpen those slide-rules.
I think the other reason I don't use small conventional/phone calculators is that without seeing the history (as on a graphic or modern scientific calculator), I'm always worrying that I've hit a wrong button.
