I have a 4Sevens 120dB whistle in Titanium on my keychain. Hope i never have to use it, though it feels better just to have it on me in case i hurt myself while geocaching.
Yeah...you couldn't possible know this of course, but I have this thing against Vulezula's, or whatever they are called... I don't know anything about soccer, but the for last decade or so it seems every kid in the country walks around blowing an orange (our nation's color) plastic one everywhere whenever there is a WK or EK. They drive me nuts! But I could try singing a song, it might have the same effect on the bear Not that we have any of those here except for in the zoo (the always look so sad there in their little prison that I wouldn't want to bother those with a silly whistle), but I was just wondering. But it does make sense, they sell those little air horns on a can to scare bears too I believe?
Vuvuzela seems to be the most common term but stadium horn is also popular. I have no idea what they'd call them in your native language, though. I've heard it suggested that air horns might scare bears away, but I'm a little reluctant to bet my life on it. I view noisemakers more as a "rescue beacon" than bear repellent. Bears are the apex predators in North America (though we have some big cats, too). The BIG bears can be found in the pacific nothwest, Canada, and Alaska, and the smaller black bears roam through large portions of the lower 48. They look a lot less sad when they're tearing through cars to get to a sandwich somebody left inside.
I used to carry a whistle on my keys over 10 years ago. I currently don't carry a whistle but I do have two in my various packs.
Fox 40 Micro on my EDC keychain for the last couple of years now. The flat style is nice for reducing bulk. Before that it was a Fox 40 Mini. I can't think of a time when I've had to use it, but it's cheap insurance. Also have some other whistles spread around & stashed in survival and first aid kits (UST JetScream, ITW survival/marine, Storm, Fox 40 Mini, Fox 40 regular). They are like flashlights, they keep multiplying!
EDC'ing a zipper-pull whistle as part of my key-chain. It's used as a key-fob, but would be handy in case signaling is necessary. Have I used it so far as a whistle? No. Would I remove it from my key-chain? No.
I carry a red emergency whistle, like the green one in post #64, in my EDC pack. Don't remember where I got it, but I didn't buy it, and honestly I probably wouldn't carry one if I didn't already have one. But I had this one, it's light and takes up no space, so I figured what the heck. I also have a nickel-plated brass scout's whistle in my truck's emergency pack. Again, didn't buy it and don't know where it came from, but had it so it went into the pack.
Bit of a necrothread but, hey why not?! Yes, Acme 636 slimline on my keychain. I've used it a couple of times as an alternative to yelling to attract people's attention when they were far off and facing away from me. (When they're facing towards and don't notice a wave I'd rather use my flashlight than the whistle.) Mostly carried as a just-in-case; it weighs next to nothing and takes nearly no space.
