I just ordered a Fox 40 Sonic Blast and a Fox 40 Mini whistle today. I don't know if I'll carry one of them or not, but I've been thinking that a whistle might be a good addition to my edc. I figure it might come in handy while out and about with the family, and could have emergency uses. If you don't mind, I was wondering how many of you have decided that a whistle is an important part of you EDC, and what was your reasoning?
Oops, I did a search and found lots of info on this topic. Sorry, should have done that before posting.
Yeah, how about thinking BEFORE needlessly insulting someone. -_- Just post on one (or all) of the relevant threads you found to bump it back up top. No harm done, just let this thread die.
I decided it was important to learn to whistle loudly with two fingers. I read a number of internet helps and practiced almost daily. I'm pretty good but still not as loud as I'd like to be. The helps always stated that learning with two fingers would be a bridge to learning without any. I'm still trying to cross that bridge.
a few months back i added a TI whistle to my keychain tools...why, im not really sure ..i just figured it couldnt hurt...i havent used for anything important yet, and i may never...the whistle isnt as loud as i expected it would be...my dog never comes when i call her..but one small toot on the whistle gets here attention fast and she comes a running...(thinking maybe i'll try it on the wife haha) my voice doesnt carry far so just a toot of the whistle does turn heads
Got a Fox 40 Sharx in my bag. My little daughter has one too that she carries when we're out in case she gets lost.
I've never been able to learn how to do this for some reason. Thanks everyone for the responses. I figure it will be a few days before I receive the new whistles. Once I get them, I plan to make one of them my EDC whistle. In the meantime I tried out a Fox Rescue Howler (available at the local Dicks Sporting Goods), and got into trouble for blowing it without warning my wife and daughter. They especially seemed to have a problem with my trying out the new whistle while they were having breakfast. Go figure.:naughty: I don't think my son was very happy about it either, but unlike the girls he kept his mouth shut.
That's pretty rude. To the OP, I also carry a whistle in my pack. Nothing special but it's loud as hell.
I see a whistle as a VERY important piece of gear for survival and even safety reasons. Therefor, I always have one on my grab bag and FAK, though I do not EDC one. I did get one to my wife and asked her to always carry it in her purse.
These threads have pretty much convinced me to try carrying a whistle every day. Potential for emergency use, but also other uses. Thanks again everyone.
I don't EDC a whistle, but I do make a point of carrying one when appropriate for me. i got an ultimate titanium Ti whistle which is small, tough and nice and loud for carrying when I am outdoors or anywhere slightly off the beaten path as an emergency signal - so camping, hiking, exploring new places and so on. Normally worn round my neck on a ballchain, but also sometimes clipped to my keyring (the whistle having a McGizmo clip attached to the D ring on it for just this purpose). I don't feel much need to carry one when going to the office or shopping in town, but when I do carry it, it is because it is an obvious safety measure.
I EDC a silent dog whistle on my key chain. He is a 104 pound lab, and loves to run over to people to say HI. When I start yelling for him to stop, it scares the people to death, thinking that there must be a reason why I am trying to get him to stop running towards them. But with the silent whistle, I can call him back without freaking the people out, and they don't even know it.
Yes. The aluminum ones from REI,on every keychain we own. She uses hers to signal Sajiko the Pug; I rarely use one but like having it handy. But I gave one to every staff member I work with,on a locked Psychiatric unit. It's a quick call for help & an attention-getter. ~Gnarly
I received the new whistles today and got to try them out. I can say that all 3 of the Fox 40 whistles worked very well. I tested the 3 against each other. All 3 were very loud, but there is a noticable difference between them. The Fox 40 Micro is nice flat design and compared to the others it would proably make for the best pocket carry. It is loud, but I'm not sure of the db rating on these. The Fox 40 Mini has a more traditional whistle shape, and would be slightly more noticable in a pocket. It sounded a little louder (I believe it's around 115db), but I don't know that the difference is significant. The Mini is also a little easier to blow, but otherwise I think the Micro and the Mini are pretty comparable. Of the 3, the new model Fox 40 "Sonic Blast" is easily the loudest and easiest to blow. It is rated to "exceeds 120db". If I were to actually need one in an emergency, the Sonic Blast is the one I would choose. It is a little more bulky than the other two, but easily pocketable if needed. That said, I wouldn't feel poorly prepared carrying any of the 3. The Micro would be my first choice for ease of carry, but my last choice of the three for actual use. The Mini my second choice, and the Sonik Blast is the best of the three IMO. I have a couple of the "Storm" whistles, and the Sonik Blast reminds me of those. Anyway, Fox 40 seems to produce a nice whistle at a nice cost. If any of you are looking for an EDC whistle, look into these. They are plastic, so I don't know about durability, but I doubt they would be easy to damage.
Nope, don't carry a whistle at all. I used to have a nickel-plated Acme Thunderer back when I was a cop which I used when directing traffic, but I have no idea where that might have gone. I don't seem to have a need these days for a whistle.
