Granular carbon. We use it by the ton. That bag hanging there weighs about 2200 lbs or so. We use water to sluice the carbon into the bags, then let them hang and drain.

The overall site is a bio-refinery, which contains a wet mill, a refinery, two ethanol plants, and a utilities dept. There are several other smaller departments that take the refined sugar from the refinery and make other products out if it using an industrial sized fermentation process. The department I work in uses that very same sugar to make a 4 carbon chain molecule called erythritol. Clear as mud?:)

We have seven operators per shift in our department, five run stations and two are floaters. This weekend I am a floater, doing odd jobs.

Similar jobs different type of plant. I'm an Operator at a Power plant here in TX. 11 guys per crew, 4 crews.

    Topic:

I used my Leatherman wave to unscrew some air lines on a pneumatic valve, so I could see if the solenoid was properly working (it wasn't).

And we do. Both of our ethanol plants make 200 proof alcohol, then they add denaturant to it as they load it out.

Topic: In an earlier picture, I used my custom pt to cut some fresh carbon bags tonight.

Also, just in case it isn't plainly obvious, I run the same risk of veering of topic as the rest of you folks. My bad.

In the past few days, I have used my EDC quite a bit.
At work I had to crawl into an area under the building, with a couple coworkers.
This area is like a real life version of Metro 2033 (for yall gamers out there).
One guy had a 1200 lumen light (can't remember brand), and I had just my Quantum D2.
Surprisingly, my D2 had about just as much throw, of course not as much brightness, as his light.
I think this was when I fully realized how powerful that little light is (and how hot it gets).

I even used my Boker credit card knife that stays in my wallet.
Me and some friends were cookin and one of them needed a knife to cut vegetables.
He asked to use my Leatherman (they know better than to ask for the Benchmade :D), but I gave him the credit card knife.
The thing was shaving sharp when I gave it to him, and still the same afterwards.
I guess 440C stainless is better than I thought.

Nothing yet today, but the last week was a very busy week for my EDC and other gear. Among other things, I:

    • Used the blade of my Pioneer to open packaging and the cap lifter to remove snow from ski bindings and fasteners for car snow chains. I also used the screw driver to take a lamp down from the cabin wall and move it to another spot.
    • Used the wire cutters on my Swiss Tool to cut the wire of the lamp.
    • Used the plain edge blade of said tool to remove the insulation from the end of the wire.
    • Used most of my lights to see in the dark.
    • Took a bandaid from my first aid kit to tape up a broken nail, and used the shears from said kit to cut it down to size.
    • Gave some chloramphenicol from my FAK to a family member with an eye infection.
    • Used my snow shovel to dig down to a well, and later to clear away a small avalanche that blocked the road.

Zancudo to open up a package in the mail with a few patches in it. Later on, used the S20 Baton in moonlight mode to find something in the room after the wife was already asleep. Worked great to give me enough light to see without being too bright....

Used my Leatherman Wave and Spyderco Tenacious today building cables for vehicle monitoring systems. The wave was used to cut and strip wires. The Tenacious to cut the outer jacket off cables.

Over the weekend, My Zebralight got a major workout (as it has every weekend for the past few months) Blowing insulation in the attics of the house we're renovating. My Sebenza got a workout as well cutting open bags of rolled insulation as well as cutting bags of blow-in insulation in half to feed the machine.

Pico Pen got used last night to sign the card receipt at the restaurant and then got used again today to fill out a customs form at the post office. Wouldn't want to try to write an essay with it but it is very handy and good to use for small tasks like these....

My EDC worked without me today. I used my 4" widgey bar (handed it to Steve) to turn an impeller on a recirculating pump.
Other than that I used my Vic to turn a couple of screws :D
