I live in the foothills of the Victorian Alps, Australia. The rear of my property is the boundary for part of the southern section of the designated deer hunting area. From my lounge room chair I can see the farmland where the deer come down to feed. To walk into the wilderness takes no effort. One tool I would choose is my hand forged Wetterlings hatchet (small axe).

Deep woods, only one tool...I'd take my Gerber LMF Infantry. Love it in the woods.

Carrying only one item would be suicidal.

Know your personal flaws and limitations.

    Prepare the mission sufficiently.

Know the terrain, weather, and other risks.

Several people in a residential area should know your remote location, and daily travel route. You should contact them every night via smartphone, radio transceiver or satellite phone. If they don't receive your call, they should call in authorities, to deploy a search & rescue mission.

Have adequate survival gear and train with it sufficiently beforehand.

Go with at least one other trustworthy person, that has enough survival knowledge for the mission.

    Keep thinking. Be careful.

An ax or machete! Not my usual EDC's but it would come more handy than a pistol or pocket folder.
