I should figure out a way to set up a vise in the living room, put down a piece of plastic, and go to town while my daughter's napping. I've verified that a dremel doesn't wake her up (I've used it while working on some shave brush handles). Then I could go to town. :)

I do have one, but I would need a 20 ft extension cord to put my dremel out there. I still don't know how I'd attach a vice. I've actually looked at the railing to see if one could attach directly to it, and it doesn't have enough lip anywhere for anything to get a solid hold onto it.

I have a Native 5, Skyline, and SOG Flash II currently. A modest collection. I used to have a Tenacious, but sold it on the BST a couple years back. I still might get a Persistence for modding stuff, though.

The biggest problem I can see myself having with creating an all new set of scales for the Skyline is that the back scale has an odd, flower shaped hole that only goes halfway down for the pivot screw. I have no idea how I would cut that out for it to fit.

Regular files are far more efficient than diamond for G10. Although they were a different size from the diamonds I was using, and I wasn't paying enough attention, so I ended up with asymmetical amounts of grooves on each scale. A quick wipe with a few drops of 3-in-1 Oil also darkened the scales right back up (thanks for that tip, misterS ;))

Overall, I'm fairly happy with how they came out. Especially considering it was my first time, with the wrong tools, and clamped to the kitchen table with a C-clamp. :)

Is it as grippy as it looks? I like the line down the middle.

It's heckuva lot grippier than it was with smooth G10 scales. I did the line down the middle just to make it different. I think it makes it look more like it was all done on purpose, not just me freeballing with a file set. But I like how it came out with it. I have some other ideas for patterns I want to do. I'll have to get some different shaped grinding stones for my rotary tool to try them out whenever I decide to get some blank G10 to completely make a set of scales.

The main thing keeping me from trying a full custom set is that my drill press is busted. I think I could do it with a regular drill but I'm pretty sure the holes would be crooked :(

That's a good point. I don't have a drill press. I've had a lot of practice freehanding drilling holes, though, so I think I'd be alright as long as it's a hole that goes all the way through. With the Skyline I have, I have no idea how I would cut out the pivot screw. Odd shape.

It has that notch so the pivot wont spin around right? Sounds hard, I already gave up, before I even started.

Yeah, it's kind of flower shaped.

Oh yeah, just looked at mine. You could probably drill it a bit smaller and just force it in. Should keep it from spinning.

The problem is that it only goes halfway through the handle, to boot. I'd have to do some precision grinding to get it just right.

Drill the small hole through and use a bigger bit for that hole. just stop before you come out the other side. Hmmm this might take some experimentation.

The problem is that drill bits tend to have a mild point on them, and when you're going on a scale that thin, it might not work. And I don't think they make forstner bits that small.
