For the past month or so I've been working on custom scales. I started by doing some file work on stock scales. My first attempt was on my ZT 0550. I was so pleased with the outcome that I removed my custom Kryptoglow scale and put the customized stock scale back on.

My next project was doing some file work on my Persistence.

Then I got myself a Dremel and some G10
My first attempt at making a scale from scratch was for my Boker SubCom, which came out decently.

Next, I made scales for my Persistence.

I also did some file work on the blade to make a "vine" pattern

My most recent project was making scales for my Tenacious. Each time it does get a little easier.

That file work was really easy. I just used a rattail file and it only took about 30 minutes. I encourage you to try it:D.

Mister, you have skill brother. I approve! :D

Quick question, are you making the entire scale or are you taking a file to an existing scale?

Thanks Willy! On the first two pics I just did file work on the existing scale. On the last three pics/knives I made the scales from G10 blanks; shaping, texturing, etc.

Do it!...just be careful that you don't file away too much on the liner lock side because the scale is extra thin under the liner lock;)

Thanks! I bought some Cuscadi scales for my SAK in those colors, so I thought I'd try making some in the same colors:D.

High quality work misterS, both the workmanship and choice of materials. [IMG]

Are you using hand files exclusively or also using Dremel?

Wow! They all look great. Despite my preference for earth tones, I think I like the orange/lime on the Persistence the best.

That makes me want to get a Persistance as was recommended to me in a thread asking for opinions on knives, if only to do something funky cool with the scales :)

Thanks xbanker! For the first two pictures; the ZT550 and Persistence I did filework on the stock scales. For the last 3 pictures with the orange, green, and blue/black scales I used a dremel for the shaping and texturing.:)
