Anyone know the filtration efficiency of microfiber towels? I have a stack of them in my basement and can make masks but I'm not sure of the material, if it is effective.

It doesn't mention microfibre, but 3M technical bulletin #174 on masks is informative.
My guess is that it depends what you want from the mask. Mostly, various cloths wrapped around your face and surgical masks don't give a lot of protection. They might reduce the distance covered by aerosol particles you emit by coughing/sneezing, i.e. provide limited protection of others.
Covid 19 isn't just transmitted by inhalation, but also by contact, so removing contaminated masks/shields require specialised procedures.

Don’t sweat it. If you can use a bandana you’ll be fine with this. The idea is to slow down the particles that you emit. You still have to keep the distance. The combination of both should make it possible to slow down infection rates. 70-80% of y’all will get it eventually.

I didn't mean to make light of the situation. My point is that there are many other options, such as what you pointed out. To consciously choose to wear boxers on your head just seems too much or that people want to draw attention to themselves. I have an abundance of bandanas that will do just fine.

All y'all: a couple of days ago I posted a link to an article from the NYT which goes into some detail (with quotes from medical types) about different materials. The article is not by any means encyclopedic; but it might be useful: https://www.nytimes.com/article/coronavirus-homemade-mask-material-DIY-face-mask-ppe.html

I found a couple shop towels that I didn’t know I had, so I’m trying a double layer with a couple bag ties in the folded, then folding that into a Buff style gaiter. It seems to provide a pretty good wrap around face an still breathable.

Well I understand not wanting Kalvin Kline plastered to your forehead, but the kid had no bandanas or sewing skills, so what are you gonna do? Myself have needed to use my Texas sized handkerchiefs to get the bandanna go all the way round my xxl sized noggin. Come to think of it. Use an extra tshirt as a mask. I found these masks. One came today and it has good build quality. Not sure about the claims about copper but seems like it will do the job overall.

i've got 2 more surgical mask remaining and both elastics in it are kind of loose already. Been in the bag for almost a year.
Just found out yesterday that SOETech sells reusable masks with filter and purchased. awaiting its arrivable but will be trying this weekend the no-sew bandana solution which was also recommended by the surgeon guy in the CDC video.

its kind of wierd though as half the folks here in IL that I see in the grocery are not wearing masks, and some even bring with them their kids..

    Just an FYI
We _seem_ to be over the peak here, with an R0 of 0.87. Tuesday small shops will be opening again. Two weeks later, the rest of the stores (supermarkets never closed). Distance to be kept. Masks mandatory in supermarkets and stores, on mass transport, and in cabs (and similar). School opening and end of mandatory home office planned for mid May. Everything under close monitoring by virologists and statisticians.
The US seems to be generally about two weeks later than we are. So buckle up, that’s gotta be a bumpy two weeks.
The bad news: Latest results from Korea suggest, that you’re not getting immune after the first infection. So herd immunity seems to be out of the picture as a solution. Plus, we only have reached 0.12-0.76% with a mortality rate of about 1.5%. Furthermore we need to be aware that: a) There was never a vaccine against a cov strain. b) There was already a mutation found in the wild c) The virus is temperature resistant, at least against the summer heat that usually ends the flu.
IMHO that means that the little mf will be around for quite a while. Social behavior will be changing indefinitely, as we will get used to it. Rather than vaccines or herd immunity, medical treatment of the symptoms will be a thing. Masks will be the new normal in certain situations, maybe for very, very long.
As for airborne, pulmonary diseases, this was not the last one. If one of the following (and there will be) has a mortality rate in the double digits and/or the virus can’t be destroyed as easily, we don’t need to think about overpopulation in any version of the future.

In France, Michelin (with other engineering companies), the tire manufacturer has just begun producing reusable masks (FFP2 EU standard, which is equivalent to the N95 US standard, filtering particules bigger than 0.3 micrometre). The mask comes with 5 filters (20 uses per filter) and costs about 28 euros, after using the provided filters, one will just have to buy new ones. The first batches will be reserved to medical professionals and law enforcement officers, and then staff dealing with the public, but the goal is to produce 5 million units by June. So the general population will probably be able to buy some from summer of this year (likely after the quarantine will be lifted).
