Hopefully all my questions are not becoming annoying. I guess everyone has the option of ignoring me if so Having bought my first gun, I am now looking to get my first holster. I have a Glock 19 with Lightguard, which limits my holster choices. It is my training/home defense gun and I don't want to take the light on/off. I've familiarized myself with it, cleaned it, put about 600 rounds downrange, and taken my CCW class. More training is on the docket and I'd rather not carry it around in the case for that, so, holster. For eventual CHL I will want IWB for a carry gun, but that won't necessarily be the G19. Still, I want a holster for it and I guess my real question is: Will the DeSantis Speed Scabbard from Crimson Trace work for concealment? Not every day, but sometimes. My normal mode of dress is jeans and a button up shirt, untucked. Obviously I have no concealed carry experience, but I'm not sure if I should have a custom-made Crossbreed or equivalent for a sometimes-carried gun. I did consider buying from White Hat (which has the exchangeable kydex pieces) and I still might, but I want to know if something like the Speed Scabbard is worth doing now. Thanks for any input.
No need for a custom holster for occasional carry, for owb I use just a normal gelco leather holster. Any holsters that holds the gun tight to your body, high enough to be covered by your over shirt, and hold the gun secure enough not to be bumped free should work. I like leather for outside of waistband but kydex definitely wins for functionality. I have no experience with that exact holster but it looks just like my gelco and it works very well for me.
Looks like it's a high-ride pancake holster. Those type of holsters in general are excellent for concealment. They only require a cover garment. Jacket or untucked shirt that's long enough to cover the muzzle, and you're all set.
Consider 'Raven concealment holsters' as well...interchangeable clips etc for I/OWB. Edit:...maybe I should add: I have a G19. The RCS (Phantom) conceals better IWB, but I find the Mtac Minotaur more comfortable. OWB I have a few holsters, as one should - the Phamtom conceals well, however it also has better retention than my other kydex holsters...which means drawing is slightly slower (I shoot IDPA, so the RCS is not as 'fast' as other, sport-specific models made by other manufacturers). If you're using it mainly for home defense, concealment should be secondary to function. You'll end up with a few different holsters...otherwise your 'one & only' holster will be a compromise. IIRC, Raven have many 'wml' options as well . You guys are spoilt for choice as far as training goes. Costa / Haley / Proctor etc etc. Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2
+1 on raven concealment my friend has a phantom light holster for his Glock 17 and he loves it. He carries at 4 o'clock and it's pretty snug that he can cover it with just a long dark t-shirt. He's happy as we're now into untucked flannel shirt season but in the summer he has used just the T-shirt.
Just make sure to take into account your state's laws with respect to open carry as well when picking out a holster. I'm a CC kinda guy, myself, but here in WI it is 100% legal to OC without a permit as well. The importance of this is that if I'm carrying OWB and my shirt ends up coming over my gun when I bend over or whatever, it's no big deal. In some states, this is a big no no and can get you in some serious trouble.
I'm not a fan of OC, but I don't think that is what you were advocating - just whether "partial concealment" is OK. The Illinois carry law has a partial concealment clause. That's mainly due to the fact that CCW permit holders will potentially have to take their firearm on and off on a regular basis and store it in a locked container (car trunk, lockbox, locked glove compartment, etc.) to prevent violating one of the many carry or gun free zone restrictions.
I'd check out the N82 Tactical Professional Holster. From everything I've heard, it's one of the most comfortable holsters out there. Of course, that's IWB. If you're going OWB, I'd second the Raven Concealment recommendation (with the pancake wings option).
OC is not an option in Texas (weird right?) so it would need to be concealed. That's pretty much why I'm asking if owb seems reasonable. I don't see going to jail if my short blows up but I don't want any attention.

Same here in Pa we are an open carry without permit so a shirt riding up isn't a big deal. Depending on the officer I guess Florida can cause problems if your shirt was to ride up. So knowing your local laws is a must.
I have a DeSantis dual position holster for my Glock 19 and it works very well. I do not have a light on mine though.
I have an uncle mikes that I mounted in a BQM pouch so that if my shirt rides up, it just looks I have a small pack on my hip. Then there is enough room for a a light and a stun gun or pepper spray.
While I'm not familiar with the DeSantis you referenced, I do have two DeSantis Speed Scabbards. One is used from my Sig P226 and the other for my Sig P229, neither of which have lights, lasers or even light rails. Both Sigs are quite large in terms of sheer bulk and both conceal well, being held both high and tight to the body. I would even say they work well with a really loose t-shirt type garment. But I don't think that any OWB holster is going to help you if your shirt rises up very much for any reason. Unless you happen to buy shirts with the extra long tails.
You're in luck: from Changes to Concealed Handgun Laws Effective September 1st, 2013 (forum software wouldn't let me post link) You can conceal your G19 OWB as long as the holster holds the gun close to your body. You'll have to experiment with cover garments to see what works best with your body shape and carry position. And if the gun flashes for a second, you're still legal.
While I don't have any experience with the holsters you're asking about, I can tell you that a holster as well as a gun belt are 2 of the most important things to consider when entering the world of CCW. They will make & break your comfort, concealibility & function. There are TONS of kydex holster makers out there than can make a holster for ANYTHING. Cannot stress the importance of a well fitted proper holster more, if the time comes & you need to draw your weapon you don't want a holster than 'kinda' fits, you want that positive & perfect release so you can defend yourself. That being said I've just ordered 2 holsters from Bravo Concealement, 1 for my G19 that serves both for IWB/OWB & another for my G26 that supports AIWB carry.
OWB is the way to go for comfort. I'll jump on the raven concealment wagon. I don't own the Phantom, but all their other products have been great for me.
i just got a iwb kydex holster from RDR. they sell a lot of holsters for glocks. I'd try them, search RDR on the web
