Just finished a coffee class up in Tucson this last weekend. Realized I didn't post anything up yet. Too excited I actually won a contest on the forum! lol. Sorry so nerdy. Anyway, Was at the Savaya coffee plant and has a bean dude, teach us all about cupping. ways of brewing, and some simple science behind it all. If I finish the 3 classes and can distinguish types of bean and brew, I get a certificate (unknown at this point) upping my coffee nerdom. Anyone else, besides barrista ninjas take a similar excursion into coffee. *practicing my cupping technique with some french roast.
Absolutely! Been to 2 open houses and one cupping at Larry's Beans in Raleigh. Had some nice Ethiopian. Also did a finca tour and cupping in Boquete Panama. Now that got me buzzin . . .
Google "Failing the Q" by Simon Ouderkirk. He's a good friend and insane coffee nerd and he offers some relevant insight.
My mother in law has paid for me to have Barrista training for my Birthday, haven't done the course yet but super excited!!
If you really want to build your palate to discerning flavors and differences in cups. Especially in cupping. Try using a cupping sheet that they use in the cup tasters championships. I'd link it but the forums won't let me. As always, the more you practice and broaden your palate the better you'll become. I've been in the industry for 4 years now... and I'm just starting to get a palate... which still fails me all the time.
