I may not be naming it correctly. I'm liking the idea of an edc pack that has a main compartment that can be fully unzipped so that the entire main compartment, when the bag lies flat, is open and accessible. I've seen a couple of reviews of bags like this, which is what has drawn me to this configuration...

Searching for them is a bit of a challenge. Partly I suspect that I'm just not naming what I am looking for correctly, so that search filters are not yielding results. Suggestions?

Additionally, if any of y'all can point me towards maker(s) who seem to have such bags in their repertoire, that would be helpful.

    Much appreciated!

Checkout TSA complaint backpacks which unzip and lay flat to avoid removing the laptop.

Many of the military style small backpacks do this eg 5.11 Rush12 and Maxped Falcon. It also easy packing and view of contents. Even my small 5.11 MOAB sling does it.

Some briefcase style bags do this too such as Tom Bihns Founders briefcase. In terms of searching, I (too) would be searching for “clamshell” or “opens flat”.

I've heard them called travel packs also due to the TSA reason.

I can think of 3 but I'm sure there are way more.

Recycled Firefighter 12/24hr (I have a 24h and like it alot)
Timbuk2 Division (Had one and sold it)
    GoRuck (Can't afford one)

Try searching for panel loading backpacks. One example I have experience with is the Kelty Redwing 50. Tortuga is another company that offers panel loaders, but I don’t have any experience with them.

    Good luck with your search!

They do, just received the 0.5 day specialist model in coyote colour, I like the design and build quality (although time will tell on durability). I recommend anyone looking at MP or 5.11 packs to also check out the FT line up for some thoughtful alternatives.

The Redwing line isn't true panel loading, it's more a 65% panel load but there is a considerable amount of the main compartment that is not truly lay flat panel loading .

The first two that came to my mind were Recycled Firefighter and GoRuck. The Evade line is almost a true lay flat except for the bottom couple inches.

I think you’ll find them to be extremely durable, mine still looks new and i have been using it for a year and am not gentle with it. Even use it daily for a foot rest, no scuffs or fabric problems whatsoever.

I bought Tasmanian tiger modular 45 plus backpack few weeks ago and I cannot be happier with it, they also offer 30L version , and if you are still looking for that type of backpack check Tasmanian tiger, Arcteryx (khard 45 and 30) or Vanquest markhor 45.

The Cannae Legion. It does exactly what you are looking for. I have had mine now for about 5 years, It's been on trips around the world with me, and have gotten rid of my other backpacks because I like the Legion so much.

Another vote for 1st Tactical as I am getting mine packed up tonight for a trip and never get tired of how insanely great it is!

And I also have and have had a lot of other great ones too.

The guy who designed the Rush series packs is the founder of 1st Tactical too.
