This is what the college rule book says "knives having a blade that swings into position by force or a spring or centrifugal force (i.e., switchblades), any knives with blades longer than three and one half inches" and I know the manix can be swung open but since it won't open unless you use your thump to fling it open is it allowed? Thanks

I would assume that means assisted knives (flicks and flippers). Manix XL is neither.

    But the blade is 3.85"

I think most (all) Spydercos can be opened by centrifugal force. Hold it by the hole and flick your wrist. Flicking with your thumb is applying force as well. This is just my opinion but the school would probably frown upon that knife.

Im sorry I meant manix 2 instead of manic xl. It's just barely above 3 1/4 so I think I'm ok on that. I didn't know if they meant that the only allowed knives were the ones with the nail cutout that are a :censored: to open. Thanks

The only knives I can't open by centifugal force (inertia opening) are my SAK and skip joints. My new zt 0450 has an absolutely brutally strong detent and with a sufficiently large full arm swing I can even open it with centrifugal force. Pretty much any knife could be construed as illegal with those guidelines.

The people in charge at your college most likely grew up between the time of West Side Story and The Outsiders. It's only natural that they expect a knife fight to break out at any second with everyone wielding switchblades. :D

The detent on the manix 2 is strong enough I'd carry it.

    College kid, Mumbo, so... :)

And, as a college kid, maybe ZMan knows the definitions of the words "allowed" and "able" and how they are different.

Not that I'm advocating any particular action, just saying that broad vocabulary will be an asset in college.

Don't care if it's right or wrong.... different conversation. You could be 12 with a masters in criminal law.... that won't change the outcome... if you go downtown.

There is a big difference in a rule instituted by a college and a local/state/federal law.

Not the place. Don't fight the man straight up if you are so inclined... subterfuge.

You can carry anything anywhere as long as you don't get caught. I've been carrying a knife to school since I was 15 or 16 always kept it clipped in my front right pants pocket. Always have a knife on me when I go downtown (Manhattan) too. Is it illegal, yea it might be... Is it frowned upon, definitely... Is it worth the risk, depends on the person. So if u don't want to risk your $100+ knife leave it at home and get a SAK

I would say "go ahead," but my college is one where their knife laws are pretty lax and it is in the south, so a lot of peeps carry a knife.
I mean heck, I carried a balisong today (legal in my state). Most peeps are more intrigued by the knives I carry than scared by them.
I don't know what the locale at your college is like, so idk.

    ^^ Exactly that^^

I work at a University and I had a Campus Security officer do this to most of my knives to make sure that they are legal. Above all else, you need to explain yourself as to why you are carrying such an item.

I carry cause I'm a technician on campus.

What is the penalty for being caught with a prohibited item?

So ummm.... Who cares? Carry your pocket knife, don't flaunt it, and if there is ever an issue be respectful and explain that you thought it was just fine. Then tell them that if it is such a problem to them you can take your tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars somewhere else.

Mumbo, under a reasonable reading of the rules as posted above, a Manix 2 is just fine. So its not a lie, and it is following the rules.

It obviously swings into position by a 'thumb' force... Don't take advice from a knife forum.
