Boots and driving for a living

    Hey guys, wondering if any of you drive a truck for a living? I do, and I have to wear steel toes. I've been wearing Carolina's and the model I first picked has been the best fitting steel toe I've ever put on, I absolutely can't feel the steel toe and that has always been a struggle for my 4E+ wide feet.

    But, lately I've been getting some serious pain in my right heel. I'm not sure if it's plantar fasciitis because it isn't from walking, it's from my gas pedal foot mashing my heel into the floor all day, and having to pull my does up to moderate the gas pedal. I spoke with a senior gentleman who's been driving for 40 years and he said the secret is higher heels, like western boots or loggers. So, I then went and bought a pair of Carolina loggers and for heel support the taller heel is definitely helping, but now I'm back to scrunched up sore toes from a narrower steel toe cap, despite these boots being 4E wide.

    So, what I want is a steel toe (or composite) logger, preferably waterproof but NOT insulated, with as wide as I can get in the toe. Suggestions? Shoe style steel toes are not an option, and I really want to stick with taller heels because the difference in heel pain is significant.

    What about putting/attaching something on the floor like a 2x2 that you can elevate your foot a bit without having the heel. That way you can wear the boots you know are comfortable.

    I don't own the truck so I can't modify anything like that and I'd be afraid of using a wood block or something that might get up into the pedals.

    I have to say though, elevating my heel has straightened out my ankle and taken pressure off my heel and it really helps. I may just have to choose the lesser evil.

    If you can't modify the cabin, how about modifying the boot? Experiment on an old pair? Also, thinking about truckers driving in high heels is Kinda awesome!

    Do you need steel toes while driving or just while out of the truck?

    The drivers I know either where cowboy style boots or Wellingtons.

    Whenever you get a chance stand with you toes on a step or edge where you can slowly lower your heels below your toes. You can also stand back from a wall doing pushup like moves keeping your feet flat.

    I've had the opposite experience and find a low heal and flexible ankle is paramount for driving comfort. Of course this is in ambulances, not big rigs.

    I'm in and out of the truck way too much to change boots or have a wooden block strapped to my boot. The problem is how high the gas pedal is and the fact that you have to hold your toe way up off the pedal to maintain speed. If you relax your foot then you're mashing the gas. I use cruise control every chance I get but it doesn't help. The problem has gotten to the point that my heel even hurts in my own car to and from work. I've been wearing the loggers now for about a week and the difference is huge, they just aren't nearly as comfortable in the toe than my other boots. Maybe I can wear these long enough to get this heel pain to go away and then rotate out with the more comfortable boots or something like that.

    I don't drive truck, but I had to wear steel tows for 16+ hours a day in the Navy and like a wider toe area. Bellevilles were the best boots I ever owned and I found them very comfortable. I don't know how high the heel is compared to what you were using or how wide their wide is, but they might be something to look at.

    If the heel thing wasn't an issue, the Carolina CA7528 is absolutely perfect, it's comfortable and I can wear them even on off days and can't feel the steel toe cap at all. But, for whatever reason when I drive in them even in my own car, I get horrible heel pain in my right foot. Switching to the loggers have eased up the pain a LOT, but then the toe cap isn't as wide despite also being a 4E width. That's what sucks about boot shopping, even within the same brand and the same size and width, they aren't truly the same width. I've gone to a couple local boot shops and tried on everything I can find with a taller heel but so far the Carolina loggers have been the best but are still lacking.

    I even talked to Nick's about having some custom boots made but they told me they can't guarantee that the steel toe will be wide enough for me. I've even tried different insoles in the CA7528 (and I've probably spent close to $100 on insoles..no kidding) and they help with walking comfort but the heel pain is still here. It's partly because of how my heel presses into the floor while driving and partly because I have to pull my toes up and hold my foot up off the gas pedal so much, even in my own car. It all results in a lot of pressure on the back of my heel. It's a crappy situation because it seems like a pretty uncommon problem, I've even asked the guys I work with but nobody else has this issue. My feet just suck.

    Thank me latter I wear smoke jumpers every single day ALL DAY, my wife likes the packers for riding (horses). Depends on how you want the toe to look like, I know you can get the sizes you need as they are a semi custom boot if you stick with the Hi-Lines or go to the Whites or Nicks. You need to send a fit sheet in before they build them for you, but if your feet are symmetrical, and you can find a stocked set that will fit you should be fine. One thing though is the arch is very high at 1st and will take some getting used to especially coming from a mass marketed shoe, that said if you know you are flat footed the, you may want to look into Wescos.

    Yes they are expensive, yes they are painful to break in for the 1st 2 weeks if you do it the hard way. But they are way better made, and last way longer with a little maintenance than most other boot store boots, they are fully rebuild-able for about the cost of new red wings when you need to and the cost for my jumpers amortizes out to about 80-100 bucks a year and I am very very hard on boots.

    Edti: seems you know about Nicks already, then all the info up there is redundent for you then, I just got a pair of more causal every day boots from Nicks and if your ever in the Spokane WA, area Whites and Nicks shops are about 3 miles apart and will treat you well trying to get you something that will work for you.

    I don't drive a truck but I was driving a SUV 60,000 miles a year servicing medical equipment. What about a great pair of insoles like Superfeet? I did that and it helped tremendously. Good luck!

    Something else I thought of was using high quality merino wool hiking socks like Smartwool PHD meant for heavy backpacking/mountaineering. They have a lot of excellent padding in the heel and ball of the foot. However, socks that thick would require boots at least ½ size larger.

    I've tried some pretty good insoles (well, ones that have worked for me in the past) but I'm convinced the biggest part of the problem has to do with over extending (retracting?) my ankle, and that's the part that's irritating my Achilles's/plantar fasciitis tendon. So far the loggers are definitely helping a lot, I'd just like to find some with a roomier toe box.

    I drive a Truck.Am in and Out of Cab 20 or so times a Day,Not to mention climbing into Cargo Bed. I like Hitec Magnum Boots.Twisted my ankle last year.Came out of Cab and landed on Curb.Lucky I was wearing high tops.

    Might be worth a trip to a foot specialist or psysiothetepist who might advise you the best way to combat it. I ended up with custom made insoles that I just put in any footwear to help my Achilles issue.

    This is a rather extreme solution but if the boots you like are goodyear welted and/or otherwise resoleable it may be worthwhile to look into getting them resoled with a logger sole.

    HOWEVER, the sole may be your problem in the first place. If your feet are sliding forward into the toe box due to the higher heel, the exact same steel toecap that fit you in the lower heeled boots may well feel too narrow in the higher heeled boots. This would have to be remedied with a boot that was designed to hold your foot steady and keep it from slipping forward. I'm no expert but I would ask a podiatrist for their advice then go for a quality pair of custom boots made to your foot shape if you can swing the cost. Nicks, Wesco, Whites, Dayton (if you want to order from Canada), et cetera all make well regarded boots (though I do not own a pair from any).
