I've been using the Pilot Vanishing Point mechanical pencil since time began. I understand Pilot no longer makes them. Recently, I added the Sakura Sumo Grip 0.5 to my arsenal.

^ I remember the Sumo Grip! :) In 4th grade, most kids "lusted" after either the PhD or the Sumo Grip. :)

When we visited NYC in 2002, we bought some Sumo Grips w/ 0.7 lead. very nice pencil because they are quite thick.

I stick with Pentel P207. I can't handle those tiny leads. Have you tried the one the looks like the Rotring made by TWSBI?

I just checked my pencil holder on my desk and found two black Pentel P205's still in mint condition. These are great pencils also. However, I wouldn't want to stick these in my shirt pocket as the tips would stab right through the fabric.

That's the cool thing with the Rotring rapid PRO. You can let the tip vanish and stick it in your shirt pocket without worrying about holes in the fabric.

Thanks for the tip (LOL). I really like mechanical pencils that have a vanishing tip, just like my trusty Pilot Vanishing Point.:)

^ I use those at school. :) I wish it had a bit more heft to it though. I do love my Rapid Pro... but that one stays at home.

Does anyone know where the Rotring Rapid Pro is made? I've seen conflicting info on this (China sometimes and Japan sometimes).

Is the country of origin stamped on the Rapid Pro or on the its box?

I thought it was Germany? Or maybe that's where their headquarters is... I know that Rubbermaid owns them... I'll check my Rapid Pro to see if there are any manufacturing marks.

(edit) I found no manufacturing marks on my pencil.

I gathered from various Youtube videos that the Rotring Rapid Pro is not made in the same country as the Rotring 600s and 800s were once made - which would mean unfortunately that the Rapid Pros are made somewhere other than Japan. That the Rapid Pros are not marked with the name of the country in which it's produced would, in my view, tend to confirm that Rotring has moved production to Taiwan or more likely China - even though some sellers occasionally still maintain that the Rapid Pro is made in Germany or Japan.

But actually I've never held such a quality piece of a pencil. It's awesome, it rides the whole day during school in my front pocket and you barely notice it. The downside is that it shows some wear, especially at the grip.

In regard to where the "rOtring" Rapid PRO Mechanical Pencils are made, I just received the following response from rOtring's customer assistance:

"The Rapid PRO Mechanical Pencils are made in Japan."

I love the Rotring 600 in Lava finish.. but they've more than doubled in price since I last looked at them... Guess they're off the purchase list.

when i walk around at Acadamy of Fine Arts, department for architecture and design, i see pretty much every quality mechanical pencil ever made, and i have yet to find any thing which feels as good in my hand as my Rapid Pro 2 mm, with Steadtler Carbon 2B-4B's (best led ever for sketching, but a bit expensive, but i can draw almost 100% black which gives a much wider tonal range than a lot of the grayer leds). So why do i spend almost half my post talking about the led's?, because almost half the experience of drawing and writing is about finding the led that fits you, not the pencil/sleeve it self.
