This question is aimed at Military Medics deployed in combat situations, EMT's in demanding environments etc. Who makes the best (strongest, most reliable, dependable) EMT Shears? I've had a few pairs and they all seem quite flimsy. I've seen some at ITS Tactical made my Mojo Medical that look quite good and I want to buy a really top quality pair. Thanks in advance Hal Chase's Febrile Mutterings
I want a pair too! But I'm gonna let you guinea pig it. I was gonna buy a cheap pair but I think I'm past that now. I want 'bomb proof' shears, as you put it.
Got a few fires to put out around here first then I'll grab some Maratacs and do a destructive test Transmitted by Droid using Crapatalk
I used the maratac/county comm shears, but, a benchmade model 7 rescue hook is still my preferred cutting tool.
Absolutly, i carry combat shears, but as soon as you get to multiple layers or jackets I make a cut with the shears and then transition to cutter, its like using a zipper. (I also carry the Houdini rescue tool) take a look at what it does to this boot 1 min in Here is a tire being cut Benchmade 8 Hook/ Strap Cutter/ Rescue Tool - Tire Cut Demo:
We were issued those when deploying and can attest to their sharpness. I had the longer version in the first video (Benchmade 8) which I felt gave a good amount of control while pulling through tougher materials. Jimping on the backside also kept it from sliding around in a wet hand or glove.
Try KAI scissors. I have tried all the brands, adc, maratac, leather man etc. The Kai are the best. Super sharp, tight tolerances, beefier and don't loosen up. I work in an emergency department and use them every day. I use them more than when I was running 911 truck. We cut plaster and fiberglass for splinting often. The fiberglass usually kills normal shears after one use. Gums the hell out of them and a bitch to clean. The Kai go through like butter and don't gum. Had same pair for about a year and still razor sharp. They are a little more pricey...about $25 pair but so worth it. You can find on amazon. Also for fellow EMTs, leather man offers pro deals. All you have to do is load a copy of national cert and you get 50% off. Makes the raptors more affordable.
Emt442 Do you have a part number for the KAI please? I found their site but they do LOTS of different scissors!! Transmitted by Droid using Crapatalk
Hahaha. "Hey baby, wanna learn about trauma stripping?" Remember though: wet, sticky, not yours-don't touch it! Lol
I'll second the Benchmade (only tried the 8, came in a trama kit). One thing to remember, most "professionals" consider EMT shears a disposable "one use" item, as they usually end up throwing them away with the bloody clothing they were used to remove, instead of trying to clean them up and sterilizing them.
I've got Raptor's I use on the ambulance. The amount of cutting power and reliability they have makes them absolutely worth it. Unless you drop your partner's pair in blood vomit... then its questionable. Definitely felt bad about that one! But yes, I cleaned them for her haha.
