    I have a question...

I own a bunch of Benchmade knives. Most recently, I picked up a 533 Mini-Bugout in S30V, slapped some Ti scales on it, and now it's my EDC pocket blade. Quite happy with it.

Started thinking that I might want a 535 for the emergency bag (a Bugout for the bugout bag... huh). Couldn't help noticing that one could get a "Benchmade" 535 direct from China for $22. Maybe I'd be throwing away $22, but I really had to see what a $22 knife was like so I ordered one. The box, packing material, instructions, the felt pouch, the little card that advertises the Axis Lock... it all looked legit. I couldn't find any fault with the knife itself, either. Blade was nice and sharp, etching on the blade was crisp and clear, pivot was smooth. There was nothing to indicate that this was not a Benchmade product.

The question is... What are the chances this blade is actually S30V? I'm guessing slim-to-none.

This model is all over eBay, with prices ranging mostly from $90 to $130. Wrote to a couple sellers asking what assurance I would have that I was buying a genuine Benchmade product. One replied "None." and the other (the $90 one) says it IS a Benchmade product, just without all the U.S. markup. My thinking is that these are probably made by a company that was contracted by Benchmade to make the knife, and when the contract was filled, they just kept cranking them out with a lesser blade steel to cut costs.

    Your thoughts?

(Edit to clarify) Imo, the $22 one and the ones on eBay not guaranteeing a genuine product and the line about not paying U.S. markup are going to be fakes. If you want a guarantee, I would recommend buying from a dealer. With Benchmade you're paying for the actual design, warranty, and materials (and yes, also the "Butterfly Tax"). Benchmade has a section in their warranty page talking about counterfeit goods: https://www.benchmade.com/warranty-service

Ultimately it's up to an individual if they want to support counterfeiting. But in my experience, you get what you pay for and deals can be too good to be true.

Benchmade used to (15+ years ago if I remember correctly) have Red class knives that were manufactured overseas for cheaper and were sold for cheaper. Since then, all three classes (Blue, Black, and Gold) have been made in their factory. The bugout being a newer model was never made overseas.

Thanks for the link, I hadn't seen that. So, basically, send them a counterfeit for service and they get to keep it.

FWIW, I emailed Benchmade and asked if they had any tips for spotting a counterfeit. Even offered to send them the $22 knock-off if they wanted to have a look. Never heard back from them.

I think there are a few videos on YouTube that talk about spotting counterfeits. I don't remember if Nick Shabazz has done a specific video on counterfeits, but I feel like he's talked about what he sees as wrong with them in some of his videos.

Huh. I never thought of checking YouTube. There's at least one YouTube vid for EVERYTHING! I'll have a look. Thanks again.

edit: A little long-winded, but this guy had the same thoughts I did.

Welp, so long as I'm here I might as well show you my 533 Mini-Bugout with Flytanium scales. Looks nicer IRL (I take crummy photos). The metal scales give it a nice balance. Changed out the orange thumb stud for black. Just need to get rid of the 2 orange spacers now. Can't find black ones anywhere yet.

There are no China Benchmades period.

I like my regular Bugout too but anything smaller and I always end up cutting myself while trying not to?!

Thanks... Not yet, but I keep checking. One Etsy seller in CA says he intends to add 533 spacers, but didn't have a date.

Just got the NOS 550 in last week. Even though I plan on switching out the 154 CM blade in my custom Mini Grip, I’m still a fan of how Benchmade heat treats this steel. I also bought a set of Benchmade green G-10 scales from a friend to go on it, so hopefully they’ll be here soon.

The Bugout is still my favorite, especially now that I have the Rockscale Ti Critter pattern scales on it.
