I have a question... I own a bunch of Benchmade knives. Most recently, I picked up a 533 Mini-Bugout in S30V, slapped some Ti scales on it, and now it's my EDC pocket blade. Quite happy with it. Started thinking that I might want a 535 for the emergency bag (a Bugout for the bugout bag... huh). Couldn't help noticing that one could get a "Benchmade" 535 direct from China for $22. Maybe I'd be throwing away $22, but I really had to see what a $22 knife was like so I ordered one. The box, packing material, instructions, the felt pouch, the little card that advertises the Axis Lock... it all looked legit. I couldn't find any fault with the knife itself, either. Blade was nice and sharp, etching on the blade was crisp and clear, pivot was smooth. There was nothing to indicate that this was not a Benchmade product. The question is... What are the chances this blade is actually S30V? I'm guessing slim-to-none. This model is all over eBay, with prices ranging mostly from $90 to $130. Wrote to a couple sellers asking what assurance I would have that I was buying a genuine Benchmade product. One replied "None." and the other (the $90 one) says it IS a Benchmade product, just without all the U.S. markup. My thinking is that these are probably made by a company that was contracted by Benchmade to make the knife, and when the contract was filled, they just kept cranking them out with a lesser blade steel to cut costs. Your thoughts?
