The original basic 551 Grip has been my go to knife for going on a year now, and I think it beautifully illustrates what makes Benchmade so great: an appreciation for and mastery of the basics. Slides open easy as pie and stays locked with not a wisp of play in the blade. Knife keeps it's edge well, feels good in the hand, and isn't a pocket anchor. Clip is actually surprisingly burly despite a few bends from some catching accidents. In short, especially for the money, I couldn't ask for a better blade. On the way back from a great vacation in Acadia NP, so forgive the shorts in the background.[IMG]

For those more knowledgeable than I, has a Benchmade ever put the steel type above the "Mel PePard" text?

I've seen the text below the "Mel Pardue" change from "US Patent..." to "benchmade.com..." and I know the 20cv steel models have it under the thumb stud, but I haven't seen the 154cm version listed anywhere other than top left of the thumb stud.

Trying to validate the authenticity of a knife via pic.

I might be suggesting the obvious here... Try contacting Benchmade and asking Customer Service? Of course, I don't know where you are located, so how easy or difficult this is for you I realize could be an issue. If phone won't work I think the Customer Service email address is on the BM website... I'm pretty certain BM have a rather active interest in identifying fakes and could respond!

^^ this is an option. I just assume they would rather I buy direct from them/a retailer, as opposed to second hand, and thus wouldn't really be invested in confirming authenticity.

Swedishelite.... I came in on the end of your question... and not sure if you are being specific to a Mel Pardue collaboration, but my BM Ares 730 has 154cm on the upper bevel, right side above Elishewitz design

Thanks, I am looking specifically at a mini grip.

I usually can never get pictures to upload properly but apparently threa worked...

The "154cm" placement and fact that the text below carries so low into the blade has me questioning it.

Likewise, the ® to the bottom right of the logo seems tighter to the butterfly than most I've seen...

Well now I'm left scratching my head.

Given the hour I shot benchmade an email and will see what they say.

Got a response back from Benchmade (I asked a couple questions abbot steel types, coatings, and etchings),

"Thanks for contacting Benchmade customer service. First of all, 154cm is going to offer better corrosion resistance compared to D2, whether the D2 is coated or not. A coated 154cm blade just improves upon that. So if you are really worried, a coated 154cm would be the way to go. Most grips will be our standard cerakote.

Personally, I always thought the mini grip was a little on the small side but it is still a great knife.

As far as laser mark placement goes, we are constantly changing how we mark blades, so that is a configuration we have made in the past."

I wonder how the cerakote compares to the BK1/2; I assume it's not as good as there really isn't mention of its specs? Eg BK1/2 exceed ASTM 117.

I have a couple spring assist knives, a ZT350 and Benchmade Barrage. I like the Barrage's spring assist because it will keep "trying" to get the blade fully open, and given space it will. On the ZT350 and some of the other spring assist knives I've tried, if the initial opening gets blocked you have to manually complete the lock.

Attempting to verify a knifes authenticity by the exact placement, size, and font of the blade markings is a futile effort. These things change over time, and are not all that precise. The location of the markings even change knife to knife in the same run on the same day, consider it manufacturing variation.

That said, if the laser mark actually says "Mel PePard" instead of "Mel Pardue", I would be very concerned. I assume that is just a typo in the post though...

    @Lightnig yeah, that's a typo.

The more I looked at various other production runs the more I saw the variances. This one caught my eye as it was a more dramatic shift than normal tolerance levels on the line.

Funny part is I eventually ordered from an AD and when it arrived the laser markings were again different than others I've seen on the same model. So, as of the March production date on my 556 there is another style of etching.
