    Hello fellow EDC'ers! :)
I'm looking into getting a new backpack, i'm going to be using it for a EDC/school pack. I have considered the 5.11 Rush 12 and 24, but as I am unable to look at these bags irl so i'm kinda' at an impass here..

I would need room for at least these things:
    - 15" laptop
    - Pencils and pens
    - 3-4 books
    - A jacket or sweatshirt
Any advice would be appreciated! :D

Hmm... quite a few backpacks would fit that criteria. Can you help us narrow it down a bit more?

    Do you want:
    -USA-made?
    -Hydration compatible?
    -MOLLE/PALS webbing?
    -Something to use for hiking?
    -Low profile or "tacticool"?
    -Price range?

Vanquest is about to drop the Trident. Great organization and build quality in their products... I'm currently on the "impatiently waiting list" for one.

Thanks for the link! hadn't seen that thread! I will try and give sufficient info below then! :)

Height and weight: I'm 185 cm (around 6 ft). 95 kg (209 lbs)

Philosophy of Use: The bag will be used mainly for school purposes, but also as a light travel bag something which i could stuff with clothes and use to spend a few nights at a place.

Describe your loadout: My loadout mainly consists of a 15" laptop, for which i own a thin sleeve so a dedicated compartment is not neccesary, a differing number of school related books (5 books at the most), a computer mouse, a charger for said computer, room for a jacket or large shirt would be useful. My main EDC is carried in a maxpedtion fatty so room for that would be required too.

I haven't got any hydration or concelaed carry needs at all.

Appearance: As stated i have really been eye-balling the rush 12 and the 24 so similar to those, I don't have any specific MOLLE needs but the option to attach extra compartments would be nice.

Preferred Method of Carry: The bag needs to be a backpack, a messenger bag or similar just wont be viable with the weight i'm going to carry on a daily basis.

Preffered brands: 5.11, but i'm open for any suggestions!

Budget: Around 200$ will go over but not by much

Hope this will make it a bit easier! :)

Those five textbooks and laptop are definitely going to add a lot of weight and bulk. Off the top of my head... Tom Bihn Brain Bag (~$160, forum sponsor), North Face Surge and Recon (~$100-125), 5.11 Rush series as you mentioned (dunno if Rush 12 is big enough), Tactical Tailor Urban Operator ($~135), GoRuck Slick 26 (~$195, has frame sheet), Camelbak Urban Assault (~$185), Eagle Industries A-III (~$115, optional frame sheet made by ATS).

Tom Bihn Synapse 19 or 25 if you feel the need for something slightly bigger. 19 is $160, and the 25 is $170 for 6 more liters of room.

As I mentioned in the Rush 12 vs. Rush 24 thread you posted in, the Rush 24 is going to be your choice out of the Rush line. I regularly carry 30+lbs in my Rush 24 with a little bit of room left over to add stuff and it carries very well (without a waist belt mind you). Some nice features of the Rush 24 that I personally like are all the organization and the two side pockets which works great for a Laptop AC Adapter (right side of my bag) or a waterproof backpack cover (left side of my bag) Let us know what you end up buying. Good luck!

I've tried a lot of bags, and the Timbuk2 Q laptop bag keeps on winning out as my school/travel laptop bag. Best laptop sleeve I've found, lots of good organization without being a huge bag, just the right amount of room for almost all tasks. I take it to the university when I teach, and everywhere when I travel.

Lots of colors available, including black. Pic is of a bright one, for visibility of the different bits.

Right now I have a Rush 24. I carry a similar load to what you have described. I carry a iPad and a 13" laptop, pencils and pens, 2 textbooks and 2 1" binders. This fits nicely in my Rush 24 and I still have some space left. You can't beat the Rush 24 for space and its reasonably priced. Let me know if you want some pictures of what my Rush 24 holds. Good luck in your bag search.

Tom Bihn Smart Alec. Maybe the upper modular pouch. Trust me on this. I had one and sold it and kick myself constantly for it.

Any opinions on Hazard 4 Second front? (I know it's got those awful unremovable waist straps). Anyone own one that can tell me how well it would fit my listed things?

Look at the laptop lineup. It has a separate laptop compartment. Pics in my EDC thread. I have the 17" model.

I researched and researched when it was time for me to buy a new bag, IMO If money was no object I would get a TAD Lightspeed.

I wound up buying a 5.11 AHN.. I am very happy with it! :)

Good luck with whatever you decide.
