Last week I took a vacation to Colorado. While I was there I wanted to see the site where the radio signal for atomic watches and clocks originated from in the U.S. This is in Fort Collins, Colorado at radio station WWVB. As much as I reasearched before leaving on vacation I could not find an address for WWVB anywhere. The closet I could find was grid coordinates on a site I found on the internet. When we got in Fort Collins I asked a couple of people if they knew where it was and not surprisingly they did not. I put the grid coordinates into Apple maps on my phone and it took me right to it, well to the locked gate on the dirt road leading to it. If it had not been Easter Sunday the gate might have been open, I don’t know that for sure though because a sign said that prearranged visits were possible. Anyway I was able to get pictures of the station and the tower array from a distance. Kinda of a cool little excursion for a geek. Lol
I kinda documented my use of my Casio Rangeman 9400 on the trip on another forum. I will post the thread in case any of you Casio enthusiasts are interested.

Let's just hope the Government keeps funding NIST so the transmitter keeps working!!! It's up for debate shortly...

I know. It hacks me off they would even consider not funding it. We gots the worst of the worst right now. As bad as it is it’s the least screwed up thing that could happen right now.

Lucky there's an app that syncs them too - works well and it's free!

Do tell! It would be great to have a backup plan for when the idiots mess things up!

With pleasure... Unfortunately it's only for iOS products (so I have 1 iPad for this application only - otherwise it's a Google household). AS WELL AS THAT - it seems I forgot that I actually paid $1.99 for it - but it is worth it (sorry for the misdirection).

The app is called "Clock Wave" on the appstore. You can find it here. Here's how it works...

    1. Start the app - it will sync to your network time (WiFi or LTE - whatever you have the iPad/iPhone on).
    2. It will start making sounds but really it is pulsing the speaker at a rate which causes a small electromagnetic field emanating from the speaker.
    3. Turn the volume up to max and place the watch in receive mode next to the speaker.
    4. The app cycles through data for about 2 minutes and then as third minute comes around the watch is done.

I wish there was an Android version...

Speaking of Ft. Collins....my atomic gShock hasnt synced in the last few days and a manual receive shows ERR. Its grabbed a sync daily at 12:04 am since Ive owned it.

Is there a problem with the site Im unaware of?

I had two that did not sync for a couple of days several days ago. No problem with the towers though. Mine all synced last night. I have found that you have to keep them away from other electronics and magnets. Those can interfere. Mine mostly sync in my watch case on my dresser each night.

Leave it in the window tonight, if you can point to the west.

Thanks. I'm fine with it being for iOS. No worries on the price. I think it will be useful -- especially because as things stand my two radio controlled G-shocks are kind of picky on where I place them for time synch!

Well, the good news is I placed my watch in the window sill last night (as is actually instructed in the user manual....but who follows the included directions?) and it synced. Normally it resides in a wooden chest on my nightstand with several other watches, and about 70 misc knives and MT’s so it must not like that location anymore.

Shielded from the signal by all the metal watches (and knives), no doubt!
