It was a successful experiment (you didn't see the failed ones beforehand) so, yep, I'll try it again with a different shape. It seems the shapes need to stay simple, for now. ;) Stay tuned, brother.

The fetching Mrs Aslan and I made a run over to the "cabin in the woods/by the lake" yesterday. We needed a mini-getaway and to check on a repair project. We're back in the big city this evening (I said it was a "run" ;) ). There was no wind yesterday afternoon and it was truly a beautiful autumn day...

Never without a few necessary items (not a complete pocket/bag dump)...

Glock 42, keys, Pelikan 605 with stub nib, Buck/Mayo knife, and Rhoda web notebook.

Ditto, with a little Kydex belt-clip holster made by a friend.

I have a problem with my laptop now as I have just drooled all over it. :)

    Beautiful work Aslan. Just beautiful.

Santa's elves have been busy. Here's part of the elven effort:

    [IMG]Untitled

Son-in-law gets a brace of knives: a "city" knife and a "country" knife. Same knife; different iterations.

    [IMG]Untitled

The country knife is acid washed. The scales are made from the burlap cloth you see in the photos (that, plus some white burlap layered in for contrast). It has burgundy G10 liners. The resin/burlap marriage is not hard (my first attempt, but it won't be my last)), but it is messy. You'll find plenty of how-to's on youtube. Just plan your work and work your plan and you'll be fine.

The city knife keeps the shiny treatment. The scales are camel bone (not my favorite bone material to date) with black G10 liners. This was the first time I've tried camel bone. It has such caché I had to try it (cam-el bone...cam-el bone...). I think people like it because there's a bit of "you can't get that stuff around here" appeal and the bone has lots of "character" (flecks and stuff). I found it to be both soft and brittle (compared to other bone samples I have used. Once it's on the handle, it doesn't matter, it seems quite stable.). The two scales looked identical on surface inspection. Once on the knife and in-process, one of them revealed itself to be much more porous that the other, with much more of that "character" I referred to above. I bought several pieces, so I'll try again and hope it's more fun next time.

Both knives got mosaic pins as finishing touches.

I decided it was time to try some leather. No, not that kind. ;) Sheaths! I found a Tandy Leather store and threw myself upon the mercy of the sales rep. It wasn't too bad. A single shoulder of veg-tanned leather, a couple of tools and some dark brown dye and I was ready for the new experiment.

I had so much fun I decided to go ahead a make a sheath for a very nice, gently used Buck 110 that came my way via that auction site we love to hate. I think my son needs a classic knife like the Buck in his budding collection. :)

There is a VG-10 core, damascus, traditional Santoku blade on the workbench right now (sorry, no pics yet). The fetching Mrs Aslan mentioned that it could be nice to have one several months ago. The bade has been hidden away for a month or so until almost the last minute (yes, why make it early when you can wait to the last minute and get an adrenalin rush?). It will have faux ivory scales with black G10 liners and nickel silver pins.

What a fun addiction hobby all this has become! And, you get to meet such great people - like all you guys and gals around here! Thank you for another year of EDCF!

I'm having a lot of fun making stuff to give loved ones for Christmas. But, there's an even better gift...

Foretold 700 years before it came to pass by the prophet Isaiah, 9:6 (NIV) "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."

If Christmas is not your thing, please don't be offended when I say "Merry Christmas" - it's just my way of saying "I love you".

    Merry Christmas, brother Aslan!

Such amazing things you have done I. Those pictures up there. If you take up many more hobbies there won't be much left for other men to excel at since you seem to do it all do well. :)

Thanks for another year of showing us all the cool stuff you've made!

That's an understatement, and he's far too humble about it as well. :)
