I was thinking about Cerakote, but then read some less than rave reviews :(

are there other custom coatings worth their salt for flashlights?

There is an EDCF member who has Cerakoted.....had to stop & think.... at least 15 or 20 pieces for me! including knives, flashlights, most anything imaginable....and every single piece has surpassed my expectations....did I mention: every piece of gear I owned gets used: hard? Not abused, but not coddled, either.

He did a gorgeous knife for grayman here,also....and some collab work with Fishwolf and GRIFFINHAWKS.

It's the single most durable finish I've ever experienced, with the two exceptions jsmitty1967 mentioned, above, and those mostly are reserved for the wealthy....:sigh:
We're talkin': :lolhammer: beat it off with a hammer, maybe. Even the first pieces he 'koted for me show zero signs of coating wear.

If you do a search here, or over on BLADE,you'll see lots of his work.
If I ever get a chance to go see him, he'll be doing my favorite Dan Wesson, my favorite Walther, and her favorite LCP.

Tell Jeff 4bush that Gnarly sent you!

there was a thread on cpf where there were some cerakoted hds and mac EDC flashlights, that had the cerakote rub off far too easily. One guy's iphone, rubbed away the cerakote finish.

I read that thread, and then you read threads where the stuff wears like the dickens- this is only a guess, but the actual material being coated and the prep work are going to dictate to a large extent the effectiveness

It has to be bad prep. I've got friends with cerakoted watches and I have some cerakoted guns, and the stuff is tough.

I just traded off my Spec Bump and I was ok about it untill I see Gnarly's now I'm missing it Bad. I'm glad I had the G10 and not the metal handel or I would be ******. Great looking Kershaw's Sir.

And Yes I am Thinking about getting the iTP SC2 coated. Toixc or Orange CeraKote would be awesome. :ninja:

Thanks all for the recommendations! :)

As far as Cerakote goes....it is some tough stuff. I have been coating stuff for a while and can tell you that as far as coatings go this stuff is the cats meow. It is a coating and will wear....its not magical but it is tough. The guy on CPF that talks about it wearing off with his IPhone...I saw that thread and it made me laugh. There are always naysayers....Cerakote is a ceramic backed, heat cured product. If you prepare the substrate properly it will last a long time with moderate to hard use.

I have done a TON of lights, knives, and tactical gear of all kinds and have yet to have a client tell me that Cerakote sucks. If one did I would gladly look at it and determine if it was customer use or a failure of the coating. It the coating failed then I would gladly re-coat the item.
