Did Tuxedomoon ever send anyone the maker/seller information on that ivory whistle? I PM'ed him, but got no response, so I don't know if he's still on the forum or not. If you did receive the maker/seller information, would you please PM it to me? Thanks very much. Meanwhile, I carry a Fox 40 Micro ... great little whistle.
When in the woods or backpacking somewhere I have the whistle that comes standard in the Ritter Pocket Survival Kit that I carry in my pack. I also have an identical whistle/kit in the car.
I use this for a whistle: http://www.thebushcraftstore.co.uk/550-paracord-bushcraft-emergency-bracelet-kit-997-p.asp
I EDC a fox 40 mini (safety orange) around my neck through some ball chain that I got from lighthound. I often forget it is there, under my shirt. This is the only thing I neck carry. I plan on getting some kind of Ti necklace with a Ti whistle, but that isnt happening in this economy.
There's one on my Sitka, but I also have a whistle in the bag. It has a mirror and magnifying glass built into it.
I carry one of these http://goinggear.com/tool-logic-signal-fire-keyring-accessory-whistle-fire-starter.html
Does anyone have experience with these? http://www.topsknives.com/product_info.php?products_id=248 Looks nice and slim for easy pocket/neck carry, and the price is good
Sure, Kubolaw, I've got several of them: only potential downside is they can break; otherwise lots of pluses.
I actually carry three whistles: a Storm whistle, a sterling silver one that was a gift from a friend, and a brass one that used to belong to my grandmother.
Micro TI run is up - http://edcforums.com/showthread.php/88867-Micro-Ti-emergency-whistle-3rd-run-taking-orders-now%21-NEW-THREAD
A whistle is a really good thing to have. Mine is just a simple plastic kids whistle. Cheap, sure, might not last forever, sure . . . but when I blow it full strength, it still rings the ears of everyone within three meters. And I have a second one packed in my day pack for when I'm away from camp. Which brings an interesting thought to bear. I haven't read this whole thread but, which whistles carry the furthest? I suppose there's probably plenty that are loud up close, but which ones carry far? I realize, though, that sound carry can sometimes be very difficult to predict and/or counter-intuitive* which means I've probably asked a very complicated question. At the moment, though, I see no need for a whistle that cost more than a dollar. Maybe if space in my pockets were at a premium a flatter one would be worth it... *I've got two weird stories about sound travel being weird. 1. A female friend of mine from university is in a wheelchair for the rest of her life. She was hit by a train when she was 16 crossing a bridge, was sober and everything, never heard it coming until it was right on her and she didn't have time to do anything. 2. Was climbing back down a (relatively small) mountain her in ZA a few months ago. Had about 100 kids with us and a number of short term volunteers. One of the kids with us had fallen and twisted her ankle and was unable to walk so there was a party of about half a dozen instructors about a km to the rear of the rest of us taking turns carrying her down slowly. I was the tail sweep of the main group, and I kept turning around and thinking they'd caught up because the song they were singing, and the stuff they were chatting about, sounded like it was coming from just a few meters behind me when in reality it was almost a km behind and above. Strange.
I have a small whistle on my keychain, and a 120dB twin chamber pealess in my daypack. Anyone within 50m is in pain when the big one is blown
Carried one for as long as I can remember. If you are down, it carries farther, and you can do it longer. I got a really nice one as a give away from the cops. Hubby calls it my rape whistle. He says if anyone tried to rape me, it would be an easy way to summon the police to dispose of the gentleman's corpse.
