I recently made this AE-1 into my bedside clock. Was my first camera ever way back when.

Is there anything I can put my DSLR in to keep it safe in my regular backpack?

I use a neoprene case for my Nikon D3000, a padded 5.11 case for my new Samsung NX300, and my dad wraps up his Nikon in a shemagh.

Crumpler used to make a "haven" - essentially a padded insert that you can drop into any bag

Fstopgear have their ICU (internal camera units) too

And finally, something like thinktank's "digital holster" would work too (there is many options for similar bags)

Oh man, that was my first "real" camera years ago. You can't go wrong with an AE-1!

We used Canon AE-1's are our primary camera when flying missions in the P-3's for the US Navy. Each camera had a 100mm lens with the focus pinned at infinity and shot with Tri-X. That camera was dang near indestructible (even for a bunch of Airedales!)

    That is super cool!
That is good to hear because this one has been riding in my messenger bag for the last few days.
I am loving it so far. I just found a really nice macro lens for it...I hope it is still there on payday!

Posting here since I'm getting some kit in soon. I bike around with a messenger bag, and I plan on rigging one of those Pelican micro cases to my bag's strap. I'll be carrying a Olympus E-PM2 with a 9mm body cap lens in there for candids, and a second lens in a Tamron lens case inside the messenger. The E-PM2 is a compact system camera, but with the 9mm on, it's as small as a point and shoot camera. I'm just hoping that the micro Pelican case is as crush proof as their bigger cases in case of a crash  , but the whole shebang should make it easier for me to catch good shots throughout the day.

I want to start up one of those 365 blogs soon; will be switching it up by taking two shots a day (9mm + some random lens choice) :D

the pelican micro cases are just as tough as the big ones (probably actually a bit more sturdy due to the small flat areas to limit flex, my 1600 lid dips quite a bit if i sit on it)
just a word of warning though, if you crash and land on it - it will hurt a lot !

My way of transporting the camera is not quite as secure, or fast to get to.. but it is with me everywhere :D.

Decades ago when film was all that was available and in 24-frame rolls, it forced us to be patient and concentrate on the getting lighting and composition just right. Disposable films cameras are inexpensive. I highly urge you to try it!

Film is indeed a lot more fun haha, I think it helps you connect with your environment more. You don't have a LCD to stare at after you take your shot; you just see it, take it, and keep looking forward :)
I do wish darkrooms were more prevalent though, especially ones that work with color. I don't like the idea of taking film to Walgreens or something to get it developed/printed, I want to take some creative liberties! Makes me want to go back in time and smack my high school self into taking advantage of the school darkroom more.

I've used a couple of cheap disposables before with mixed results, some rubbish pictures but some I liked too! Most of the cheap disposables available here don't have a lot of control over the settings however.

Check out the Mountainsmith Kit Cube. With that I'm able to keep my camera with a lens mounted and an extra lens.
