For those who've seen my Lightweight Tactical Pants Review thread, is there any interest in a similar thread with a handful of "functional" (I'm avoiding the word 'tactical' here so I don't alienate those who don't care for what the word implies) shorts for the warmer months?

I don't wear shorts a lot - mostly during athletic endeavors (hiking, biking, paddling, adventure racing) - so this review would probably trend toward performance/active shorts, i.e. lightweight, moisture-resistant fabrics with functional pockets and belt loops.

I have one pair of Columbia shorts in hand (can't recall the model at the moment)as well as a pair of Columbia Silver Ridge Cargo Shorts and a pair of Kuhl Renegade Shorts on the way. I might add one more manufacturer if I can find one that I like (open to suggestions).

    Please respond to the poll.

Wow! Three whopping "yes" votes. Not a lot of shorts-wearing EDC-ers?

I've been known to wear shorts in the summer when it's really hot, but in my case they're almost always zip-off cargo pants that convert into shorts.

So I'm afraid dedicated shorts don't really hold much interest for me. But I really like what you did with the tactical cargo pants review, if you did one for shorts, I'd definitely read it.

I wear shorts more often than not when the weather is decent. Can't find many I like lately though. The last few years, shorts have gotten longer and longer to where they're now ending mid-calf. Call me weird but I want my shorts to be short! Like maybe an 8 inch inseam is plenty.

One of the three pair that I currently have queued up for review is shorter, two are longer. Not sure if the shorter pair is an 8" inseam or not.

    Perhaps some like these? :D

LOL! I think those are a fair bit less than 8" but it's hard to tell as the measurement starts higher.:p

I've been wearing shorts exclusively over the past Summer (in Australia), and I've basically been using two types. The 5.11 Taclite Pro shorts have the perfect pocket layout and are extremely versatile. I've also been using a pair of (quite pricey) nylon hiking shorts for the quick-dry capability for when I jump into some water.

The perfect pair of shorts to me, would have the 5.11 pocket layout, reinforced pocket seams, belt loops and elastic waistband, but with a 95% nylon/5% spandex material for comfort and quick drying (also moisture wicking and breathable).

I vote yes on your shorts comparison, would be interesting to see how other shorts perform. (edit: I'm especially interested in the Kuhl Renegades)

I would like to see some functional shorts.
It is hard to find something that is not, to long, baggy,or has a bunch of useless pockets.

I was just going to suggest this in your tactical pants review thread. With summer here in few months, it will come in handy.

    I voted for.

I have several pairs of Columbia shorts that I wear in the summer, can't remember which model though. Looking forward to your review of the kuhl shorts.

Will you be buying these from Scheels?

    I'm Moobile, Baby!!!

Heck yeah! I've been looking for good summer shorts high and low, but just couldn't find something to my liking in a price that's reasonable.

How many brands are we talking about? I seem to live in my TAD F10 shorts practically all year long. (Wearing black ampfib F10's right now in fact)

It would be interesting to know what other comparable brands offer. As far as general mainstream brands go (are we going there too?) I like Lucky Brand shorts too....

So far, I have two brands and three different models of shorts. I'm starting to wonder if the field is too wide open (too many brands and models) for a side-by-side comparison to give a real picture of the market. There are FAR fewer options when it comes to lightweight tactical pants.
