I don't like any of them really. Too many compromises in garphics, speed, RAM. Of those the toshiba is marginally better IMHO.

Toshiba and HP are good. I personally would stay away from Gateway.

My Fiance has had good luck with HP service, and they went over and above to help her out.

That said it had to be shipped out for service 2 times in 3 years.

From the 3 you selected the toshiba is the best bet, and will do fine for what you want to use it for.

I am a mac fan though, and would spend the extra money on one again if I could afford it. Mine is falling apart after 4 years of abuse, but still runs as good as the day I got her. ;)

I have several used Panasonic Toughbooks I sell as a hobby/side income. But the purpose of mentioning that is not to sell you one (although I would be happy to do so), but to make this point. For the purposes you listed, any laptop made in the last five, even ten years would suffice. If you do not need exceptional graphics to play games or tons of RAM and a quad core processor to multi task, then any of the above would work. However, think of this as buying a car, as they can be very similar when in the market for either. Would you rather spend $5000 on a small econobox, or spend the same amount on a two or three year old car that has more room, more power, probably safer in a collision and still gets above average mpg? (Think Crown Victoria for example.) If you take that $300-500 and buy a used Panasonic/Itronix/Getac, you will get a computer that will survive anything up to and including a nuclear attack, rather than a piece of plastic that will explode the first time it is dropped (and trust me, it will be dropped!) Bottom line, look around at all your choices before you purchase.

I have had plenty of problems with toshiba. I am on my laptop now (toshiba) and it makes me want to throw it out the window. It has had various different problems like software failing on it (IE makes it get the blue screen), hardware failing (wifi)(keyboard)(button to turn mouse pad on/off).

The one think I would say though, it gets the job done.

Just buy a nexus 7/10 tablet or ipad, probably will do everything you will use a laptop for anyway. Plus its lighter, more durable, and just fun to use. You will probably end up saving money too.

Would you realy use an ipad or other tablet as your main computer?
And Runscape is uplayable on tablets.

^^ tablets are neat but they cannot replace a "main computer" entirely

As to the OP, really with walmart laptops at that price point its really just flipping a quarter to decide. Trust me we have had 6 different ones in our house o'er the last 4ish yrs & all of them have pretty much been fine "basic" laptops

Get a second hand, well looked after or refurbished and more powerful laptop that runs windows XP or something. It's a system that works, Vista is tosh, 7 is also good and 8 is probably not needed. That's probably what I'd do if I was on a tight budget and wanted to surf and game.

I sell pcs and laptops as part of my job
Personally I would go with an Intel I5 cpu laptop (or better) with 4G Ram min for Win8

The one on Woot.com today is a great deal. I own it.

I personally wouldn't go with any of those. You can do a lot more for about the same price if you keep an eye on dealnews.com. HP is an absolutely horrible computer. They slow down very quickly (I have used 4 or 5 of them and all have done that exact same thing). Toshiba makes a good laptop except for their cheapest offerings which are not at all like their mid to higher priced models. I have no experience with gateway laptops and have heard a lot of negative things about them. I have had two desktops from them and never had an issue. I'd stick to brands like Toshiba, Lenovo, and Acer.

check the statistics, first you bash HP for reliability issues, then recommend Acer, one of the most repaired plastic crap computers in the world.. Do your HP experience come from 10 year old dv6000's or their newest envy models which have excellent cooling compared to what they had before. and a laptop running slower and slower is most of the time a 98% software issue and has nothing to do with the laptop brand.
I my self would never buy anything else than Lenovo, we have 20+ desktops at work running 24 hours a day for many years and we hardly ever have any problems, also my own lenovo laptops are the most reliable things on earth.

Any one that doesn't have windows 8. But the Toshiba.

Ouch, must have hit your HP nerve. First of all, when someone asks for an opinion in a thread, I will give my opinion based on my experiences, thank you very much. Second, read my post, I didn't say the whole world knows HP sucks. The second word in my post is "personally" as in MY preference. My HP experiences come from two my grandmother owned, 1 my roommate owned, 1 my sister owned, and my current work issued laptop which is a ProBook 4430s. The ProBook ran like a top for the first three months and then did what every other HP that I have dealt with does which is slowed wayyyyy down. This is a work issued computer and the software has not been modified from the stock (Policy doesn't allow us to modify it) so I'm not sure what software could be bogging it down and it never runs any memory intensive software anyway. I never bashed HP reliability either. I said they are prone to slowing down quickly, which has nothing to do with whether or not it will function reliably as a computer. But looking at your own statistics it seems that HP really isn't doing all that well on reliability (note your statistics come from ONE repair source as well). My reason for recommending Acer is that my personal laptop is a 5 year old Acer that has run all sorts of different software, taken all sorts of different falls (3+ feet unprotected onto pavement), and just generally been overused and abused. It still boots up quickly, runs quickly, and works well. I only have two issues with it after all these years- short battery life (wasn't ever great but now its a 5 yr. old battery) and a tendency to overheat (which I think is from internal damage from one of the more recent falls). I know some people have issues with Acer, however in my experience, I paid very little money for a very good laptop. BTW, most computers are made of a lot of plastic. I do agree that Lenovo makes some work horse computers and would be one of my go to brands.
