Which lanterns are you talking about? The Tritium keychain version or the gas/big battery style? :)

Ah, I'm more into personal flashlights and haven't gotten into lanterns yet, but I'm subscribed to learn something. :)

With a plastic bottle (preferably frosted) you can do this:

Got the idea from an article someplace. I'm not that brilliant :p.

I could see a lantern for home or car use or if you do a lot of camping.... not so much for EDC. At that point figuring out what you lumen requirements are and what your preference for battery type will help narrow down things fairly fast.

Right now, a lantern isn't that big a priority for me, so I am OK with modifying the light using what I need from the light modifer sampler pack:
    Top To Bottom/Left To Right
    1. Top Layer: Opaque White Diffuser Cone (Olight) / Lower Layer: Opaque Red Diffuser Cone (Olight)
    2. Top Layer: Translucent White Diffuser Cone (Fenix) / Lower Layer: Opaque White Diffuser Cone (Fenix)
    3. Fenix Diffuser Lens
    4. Fenix Red Filter Lens
    5. Fenix Camping Lampshade (and a length of looped accessory cord).
    6. Large McGizmo Clip
    7. Fenix Red Traffic Diffuser tip
#5 & #6 can be used to provide hanging light by clipping something directly with the McGizmo clip. If the it's too large to clip directlt, you can wrap the accessory cord around and clip the McGizmo back to the standing part of the cord.

All the accessories fit a Fenix LD 10/20, Olight TC10/15, or similar. Not everything is EDCed.... rotate, rinse, and repeat as needed.

    Sinus Loaded Pockets

Everytime I see one of these Solarforce lanterns there is this voice in my mind which says: "buy one and sand blast the acrylic glas very gentle or use some grit paper for an even softer light pattern".

Or you can build yourself a diy-lantern using a tupperware container (or the cheaper knock-offs).
Someone recently suggested to use a white film capsule (35mm film) as a mini lantern for single AA/AAA EDC lights over at BLF.

I've got the Solarforce extension thing above - makes for a very useful bit of kit. The sandpaper's a rather good idea too

    Got two!

    Wanna see 'em?

    No,no,no! Please: no sandpaper.
    Google: Diffuser film.
The companies that make this for commercial & residential windows will send you free samples. You pick which.
Each piece is big enough to do 2 Solarforce lanterns.
    Cut with scissors, while stationary.
    Don't run.

I have several of the Freeplay Indigo wind up ones. These are not toys, but quite useful. Sixty seconds of wind time gives six minutes of light. Or you can pre-charge it with the included AC adapter: that gives hours of run time. The company claims 70 hours, but don't really know. Cost is approx. $30.

Bear in mind these are not "light up the sky" flashlights as some members prefer. But, they provide reliable, longer term lighting for disaster situations. Also, has a built in night light that one of my grandsons used on a backpacking trip, every night and all night for five nights, without having to re-charge it.

DISCLAIMER: my photo skills totally suck, my digital camera is almost antique, I overlit the HELL outta the Coyote Tan picture (it's darker tan, in real life!) et I underlit the Sniper Gray picture....it's my favorite Cerakote color, bar none. ( My photography just makes it look dull & unappealing. In reality, it's freakinGorgeous.) Special thanx to B'rer Jeff Forbush, at 4bushweaponsrefinishingsystems. He even cerakoted the #6 split rings & the heavy Spro swivels. His work must be seen in person to be appreciated. My photos do not do these pieces justice.
