Hi, I am looking to put a fak together and was wondering what kind of gloves were needed to protect yourself from something in someone else's blood. is it exam grade or something else? Any comments are welcome but I would especially like to hear from emt's. thanks.

I prefer white/light blue/purple anything but black. Never thought I'd care, until we switched to black. You can't see whats on them (bodily fluids, etc.) and in low light situations dealing with *sharps* its nice to be able to clearly see your hands and fingers.

Nitrile exam gloves. You can buy em anywhere. I think I usually get mine from CVS or Target. Bright blue usually works well.

    One more for nitrile gloves...
Depending on your most posible situations you might need the "thick" ones, with textured fingertips and a bit tougher than regular ones. But be aware you'll be trading tact for protection ;)

another for nitrile gloves, i use them at work ( engineer ) and they are good all round gloves good resistance to the various harmful fluids i come in contact with, i keep some in my edc bag in the FAK

Yet another for Nitrile gloves, for all the reasons stated above. You can get boxes of them off Amazon and others, if your local supplier doesn't carry them (not unheard of in the UK).

    Are vinyl gloves ok?

    No.
Vinyl gloves aren't elastic so they fit worse and making you loose some dexterity, some more if you're not used to working with gloves. They're more fragile and IIRC can loose their barrier function after some time wet (like when dealing with blood for a while).

Nitrile Gloves. Our service uses light blue ones but I personally prefer the white ones that I got from the fire service. They are thinner and fit better but are just as strong plus I can see whats on them heaps easier in the back of a low lit truck.

Basically all you really need to choose is colour because Nitrile gloves are the way to go :p

i edc black nitrile gloves. never had a situation with blood included so i normally use them when picking up muddy things or digging around in dirty/dusty surroundings...but i have/edc a pair of thin leather gloves for harsher conditions....

I get nitrile gloves from work. Always have a few sets in my pocket. In my line of work you can't be to careful. Usually double up too. I find them all over the place. In the car, in my bags, in the washing machine or tumble dryer!

Got some gloves for Christmas...very nice winter gloves with thinner material on the thumb and finger for allowing you to operate a touchscreen electronic device.

Another vote for nitrile- I carry a pair of blue ones in my FAK.
The standard strength test for me is trying to punch a hole in the wrist portion of the glove with your finger. If you can't press through it or it's pretty difficult you're good.
You'll want to learn how to take them off without contacting the bodily fluids. I can explain it but it's easier to just watch a video.
