What's great about Chrome OS is that manufacturers don't have to pay exorbitant licensing fees to use it, thus passing the savings on to the user, so that we don't have to pay extra for a laptop that we're gonna install Linux on anyway.

I hope they do a better job of keeping these in stock than they've done with the Samsung Chromebook and the various Nexus devices. I think Google could sell as many of these things as they want this season if they can ramp production aqequately. The new Samsung Chromebook has been sold out since they released.

I'm actually typing this on the original Google CR-48 prototype for the Chromebooks. :D

Depends on where you shop I suppose.

Note tho that this is basically a web browser only computer, unless you take the time to go into developer mode and mess around.

I would guess that 99% of a laptop's use is Web only. (Note that there is a version of Google's Drive on the Chromebook for Word Processing and other office tasks.)

Just curious if anyone here actually pulled the trigger on the Acer C7 Chromebook? If so, what do you think and what are the limitations when you aren't connected to the internet? Are you still able to play music or videos if it is stored on the hard drive?

I finally ended up getting the Samsung Chromebook before Christmas. It's great! It is much faster than my original CR-48 prototype Chromebook and the form factor is very much like a Macbook Air. It's hard to believe that the Samsung Exynos powering the unit is so fast compared to the Atom in the original (not that the Atom was a fast CPU). The Acer C7 Chromebook costs a little less but isn't quite as sleek and the battery doesn't last as long. You can do much more with Chrome offline than you used to including creating docs, accessing mail offline, listening to locally stored music, etc.

Thanks! I guess some of the bad reviews I've seen have been from people that don't really understand what they are purchasing. Some of the reviews I've read have not been very clear about offline use or say they can't even log in without internet access. I have been contemplating purchasing one of these for use while traveling. I wanted to be able to load some MP3s and a couple movies. I wanted to be sure they would still play when I'm in locations without internet access.

    Stay safe!

I was able to play MP3 files using the File Manager while unconnected just fine. I don't know that the Google Music interface offers an offline mode though. I haven't actually tried a video in the same way but I'd be surprised if it wouldn't work.

I appreciate the response. It looks like I'm going to give the Acer C7 Chromebook a try when funds permit. I was hoping to try the Samsung but it appears to be sold out everywhere.

I don't have a Chromebook yet (I'll cop the Samsung once it becomes available again) but on my Nexus 7, you can designate "on-device" music for those moments that you don't have access to the cloud. I'd be surprised if the Chromebook version of Google Music didn't offer the same feature.

Thanks! It sounds like it should work just fine. I'm hoping the videos will work as well. I'm torn between the Acer and Samsung versions. I guess it will depend on what unit is available when I can free up some funds.
