Other uses for bottle opener on gerber shard?

    I can't think of any. :|

I just hate how its sticking out there, being useless.

Gerber, god bless them, really failed on the "one piece tool" front. The pry bar is too thick, and the bottle opener is too thin...

As I'm considering purchase of a shard ($8 is quite worrisome. Ok, so I haven't found one in the store yet, and don't want to pay shipping) I find this statement interesting...

Can you reccomend something of a different brand but similar design that is better made?

And to answer the OP's question: If you don't use it, could you remove it? Or are you looking for something for it to do between opening bottles?

I can't. If you want a small pry bar, get a countycomm pico/micro widgy
my favorite feature about my gerber artifact is the replaceable blade, but that's nothing that can't be replicated
if you wan't a bottle opener, get a church key

maybe the piranha could be comparable? but it's still very expensive compared to the shard/artifact

that's the thing about the artifact- it's cheap; considering the cost, it gets the job done.
Yah, I have to finesse my beer bottles a bit. But I can get them open in only a couple of seconds- it's fine for hanging out with the guys, but if you're a professional bartender, or throwing a huge party, consider something else
and, i DO use the pry bar to open my zippo fluid container, it's just too fat to squeeze into smaller openings that my countycomm pico widgy can get into- maybe if you get the shard/artifact, you can grind the pry bar down a bit (might lose strength)

Epicelite, would the Brewzer suit you? It seems to me that it would do everything the shard does, if not quite as well for some things, and the bottle opener is not "sticking out there". http://pockettoolx.com/products/brewzer

1/4 inch screw driver bits fit in the bottle opener.
