Unhappy Update: NYC "Gravity Knife" Shakedown

Here's a link to the latest news about this situation. It is worse than I thought.

What's more, it is affecting non-NYC knife retailers.

Pretty unbelievable and outrageous but read for yourself:

I urge everyone to contact their Congressional representatives and state representatives.

I'm all for telling the politicians how I feel, but this case is one where it could have very limited effectiveness outside of a well organized campaign. Folks like me who aren't NY residents will almost certainly have their correspondence ignored. If the retailers and manufacturers who have stopped shipping to NY had a unified communication that everyone else could sign on to that might be the best thing. My single letter or phone call to Cyrus Vance is just going to go right into the trash since I don't live there. I'd send it all the same but I'd prefer we had a cohesive plan for lots of folks to act en masse.

I wrote to Doug Ritter last week to ask if there was any news, considering it had been two months since their last release on the issue. Even if there wasn't anything they could publicly say at this time I told him I would still consider it a good sign for them to let us know they're working on it. He replied that he understood my point and would send out an email over the weekend. Unfortunately, there's still nothing new from Knife Rights.

as a LEO in NY, i'm ashamed. it's all about money and arrest/conviction numbers.

i do my job, and i do it well, but i hate seeing law enforcement being used as a pawn.

I heard about this a while ago, it's a shame to see that politics are always same; about the people on top and never about the people being governed.

It's better to type the letter and print it. However beautiful your handwriting may be, formal letters to officials should always be typewritten or written on a computer and printed out. Handwritten letters are more suitable for people you know personally.

That sounds far worse than England to me. The UK only limits sales of a few types of knife e.g. balisongs & autos. Other than this, fixed blades, lock knives, OHO knives etc are all available for sale to anyone over 18. - it's just the carying of them without good reason that's outlawed.

Also, forgive me for saying that any official government department "demanding contributions" is quite worrying, regardless of the cause.
