Do I have to register to participate on this forum?
Yes. You must register with a valid email address. EDCForums requires that a non-disposable email address be used when registering for an account. Members who register using a disposable email address; an address that includes EDCF, EDC, and the like; or one that includes offensive language will not have their registration approved.
What are the forum rules?
Please see Forum guidelines for further information.

What are the graemlins that I sometimes see in posts, and what do they mean?
EDCF staff members each have a graemlin associated with them (see above). If you see a post where one is used, the person is specifically posting as a staff member and not as a regular member. Sometimes it is used to let people know that the staff member has edited a post.
example: Shortened links
At other times it is used to distinguish an official post from a non-official one.
example: Please check your PMs concerning BST rules.
How do I report a violation of the forum rules?
At the bottom right of each post, above the sig line if present, is a link that says "Report to moderator." Please click that link within the offending post and make a short note describing the problem. You may also send a PM to the moderators to notify them of inappropriate posts.
What are baiting, trolling, and flaming?
baiting - On the Internet, baiting is similar to trolling, in that baiters, like trolls, try to elicit a response from other users. The difference is that the response is supposed to be embarrassing to the user in question, and humorous to others. (wikipedia.org) Also challenging posted statements with the primary intent of eliciting an argument.
trolling - The act of purposefully antagonizing other people. Typically unleashing one or more cynical or sarcastic remarks on an innocent by-stander.
e.g. Guy: "I just found the coolest ninja pencil in existence."
Other Guy: "I just found the most retarded thread in existence." (urbandictionary.com)
flaming - An online argument that becomes nasty or derisive, where insulting a party to the discussion takes precedence over the objective merits of one side or another. (urbandictionary.com)
What is Hot Linking, and why isn't it allowed?
You "hot link" an image when you link it directly to its source and the source is not owned by you (akin to stealing an image). This may place a heavy burden on other sites, and it is strongly discouraged. If you find an image that you like, please save it to your hard drive and use an image- hosting service before posting it. An alternative to hotlinking is to provide the url of the image you want to post.
What is the max allowed size of an image?
No more than 640x480 pixels. Consider using "thumbnails" (smaller versions of your photos, which you click to enlarge) whenever possible as this allows for faster loading of a thread. Most image-hosting services will provide you with the appropriate thumbnail links when you upload your images.
What is the max size for an Avatar photo?
65x65 pixels
What is a "sig line" (signature line), and what are the restrictions for them?
It is a way of personalizing your posts. Once you activate it in your user options, it will appear at the bottom of all your posts. What you can place on your signature is limited by the Forum Rules, but it is not required to have a signature line. People usually place a relevant quote, a small photo or a link to an interesting Website as part of their sig lines. Restrictions: Keep it small...no higher than 50pxl for a graphic. As far as character limitations in sigs, 300 chars.
Why can't I reply to a closed thread?
A closed thread, in the opinion of the staff, has served its purpose or is under review because of violations of forum policies and/or rules. Staff may post into a closed thread if they feel that it is appropriate; however, members may not.
What is PM and how do I use it?
PM - private message, a simplified version of e-mail which is used to communicate with fellow forum members, moderators, and administrators. Keep personal communication personal. Unless both parties agree, posting the contents of a PM is not allowed. While the same text in a PM might be considered part of the communication process, the same text posted on the forum may be inflammatory and perhaps even a bit trollish.

How do you shorten a link to just a word or phrase?
If you hit "preview" instead of "post" you'll see the screen where you can add smileys and make bold text etc. Look under the "B"old button and you have another row of buttons, 3rd from the left is "insert hyperlink". (You'll see that if you just hover your cursor over the button w/o moving.) Just hit the "insert hyperlink" button. A mini screen pops up that asks for the URL then you hit OK and a 2nd mini screen comes up and asks for the text you want connected to the link. Hit OK again and it inserts the whole mess. ***Below is the old way to do this, it will still work but is more time consuming.
_________________________________________________
You'll need to type the following:
By using the above code, you can have the phrase "The best forum ever" linked to edcf.com, for example:
The best forum ever
You can make sure it works by hitting the preview button so I don't have to edit the post later.

How do you post an image? (link)

Raffles, Giveaways, Contests
These events are a special part of what makes EDCF so fun. Our members have proved to be very generous when it comes to contests, raffles, and giveaways and we hope to have many of these for years to come.
If you would like to sponsor or organize one of these events on EDCF, you'll need to contact a board administrator to clear it first. Once it's been cleared, we'll do our best to promote it like mad, and may all EDCF members be winners in the end.
