Here is one of the threads on the subject if you have not seen it. EDCF Glowing Spyderco Thread (http://edcforums.com/showthread.php/74317-Spyderco-Manix-EDCF-Special-Edition)

I will be talking to Spyderco this coming week. Hopefully Monday or Tuesday.

I will find out what information I can put out and make it available. I will provide information as I get updates.

Here is what I can tell you. It is a C101 Manix2 with glow Handle, Skeletonized Liners and flat ground CPM-S30V Blade steel engraved with EDC Forums Logo. Current price $149.95.

The other news it will have to be a 600 piece run or more. The no fun part of this is based on their production schedule it is slated for February. The plus side if we can reach those kind of numbers it will change the forum in a huge way. Those kind of the number and the forum is completely out of risk for a very long time and professional coders will be able to come in a dress the place up a little.

Even though this is a ways off I need to be getting an idea on how much demand there is for these.

This is not really a poll but is just to make it easier to get a total without going through each post to count the I want one comments.

I really don't like doing this but to check the interest level I might send out a mass communication so that no one misses this. Well, the guys on AOL and SBC might not get the message.

I am going to be chatting with Spyderco on that this coming week. I am right now getting everyone know where to find all the updates so they are not scattered. We have a few threads on the subject :)

Comments and questions most welcome as information is made available. I imagine most will not want to stick their name in until all the details are in.

Watch here for the updates.

Some place there is a youtube video with it in the prototype case at the blade show. Anyone know where that is?

There is also a picture of the glow handle on a PSK that I sold. I need to find that picture to show off the handle material.

Here are some images of the handle material on some Bark River PSK's

It feels kind of like Micarta

Those of you that went to the Blade Show and stopped by the Spyderco booth may have seen the prototype. They had it on display.

Put me down for "I want one", but I'm a student so we'll see what my situation will be in February... and what the price will be.

This knife has had a bit of attention on the Spyderco forum, and although many of those people are not on edcforums.com, I believe that quite a few will sell to people in that community as the word gets out. There are a lot of hard-core Manix2 variant collectors out there.

Not a pre-order per say, we do want only people that really to plan on getting one to vote. We need to find out if there is enough interest to go through with this. If the first run sells out they will do a second run at a lower quanitity. As more information becomes available to people we hope we can get a rought idea of the demand. If demand is greater than expected they said there could be a follow up run but I think the follow up requires 400. We hope we can anticipate the first run well enough. Those on the fence should wait until enough information is available before voting.

If we get them made and the demand is not there that could hurt pretty bad.

I'm on a number of Knife Forums and the Manix is a well thought of blade for an EDC knife. That combined with the "Glow in the Dark" scales and I can see a quick sell-out coming.

Darkfin
08-09-2010, 12:33 AM
600 should sell out, though I suspect more will go to pure Spyderco collectors than EDC members, especially with cool GITD scales! But IMO it's all good if it gets the knife made! In for 1-3 depending on whether they will be coming via distributor or only directly from SFO.

JonSidneyB

Excellent! I love SFO to death, but they always charge full MSRP on these types of LE knives. If you feel like you aren't getting enough interest, throw a thread up on Spyderco's forum and watch the Piranha attack! :)

I have a feeling I will. I just had to make sure everyone knows about it for that to happen. If they don't know, that can tell me they are interested :). I don't feel comfortable about posting it there as they will mention it probably anyway.

I am going to try and talk to them Monday or Tuesday to work out details and find out what is OK for me to say. I am going to be massively busy in the morning but I am going to try and fit it in.

Ballpark, are we talking $75? $100? $125? $150?

I have recently become receptive to upgrading from the $35 CRKT Hammond Cruiser that has done me pretty well for three years now, and might be into a new knife if it's toward the lower end of that range. I am fairly new here but do like the idea of supporting the forums in this way; however, I have very little gear budget at the moment.

I'm still quite new to knives, but I've heard good things about this brand.

I don't have anything better than the well-known Victorinox Swiss army knives at the moment. Maybe the equivalent of a Maglite, which I always believed to be the best flashlight around, while we all know Surefire is really high end??

Depending on the price, I'll be in for one. I just don't know what range we are talking about. Here in Europe, Surefire knives go for over EUR 500,- (that's way over $600,-) and when it's THAT range, I'll have to pass...
If it's around $100,- I'm in!

I want one in the worst way! I would pay for it now even with the February production schedule. The GITD PSK pictured is mine and I can tell you it is a really nice material. It is very hard and not easily marred and the GITD aspect is very bright. The color in the day is a pale green so it is a nice color even when it isn't glowing. It would make a really special Spyderco unlike any that has been produced.

I'm very interested also but like many others have mentioned, knowing the price point would ultimately help with my decision. I've already got the 154CM / G10 Manix2 and it's currently my biggest folder.

fugleebeast
08-09-2010, 12:22 PM
Well, the normal Manix 2 with G-10 scales and 154CM steel is around $75. Regardless of handle material, this is going to have S30V steel so I would be very surprised if it was less than $100. Considering the handle material, steel material, and possibly a flat grind, I would guess the price will be around $115-$125; that's assuming that we wouldn't have to pay full MSRP.

If it's anywhere near $125, I'm definitely in for one! I've collected Spydercos for about 8 years now and the Manix 2 is one of my all time favorite designs. Also, bear in mind, even if the knife is a little bit pricey it will probably hold its value very well. The Spyderco sprint runs almost always keep their value, if not increase in value; especially the small runs of just 600. This is an extremely popular model and it would be the first (I believe) that Spyderco has done with GITD material. I'm very excited!

Blerv
08-09-2010, 12:31 PM
I'm totally in on this one :)

Yea my guess retail would be in that $120-130 range. Not sure if it would be direct buy or sent to dealers.

Is there a big dealer on EDC that would commit to the 600 pieces and sell direct?

Another consideration for cost is steel choice.

Carpenter CTS-XHP sprint was cheaper than the CPM-S30v one and seems to have been very comparable. I think that spring (Foliage Green CTS) was about $110 but they did make more. Tool steels like D2 are even cheaper I would think and are still HIGHLY respected in the industry.

It doesn't matter to me but food for thought.

Price will depend on demand ( total ordered ) and steel used. Anyway a LE Sprint run knife is better than $$$ in the bank these days

Well, first I heard of this was from Jon's email today! Serves me right for not paying attention.

I would definitely be interested in one of these. Price is a consideration of course, but my ideal Manix would have a full flat grind and full liners, both of these things are important to get the true 'Manix feel'. It's a big knife and should feel like one, I think a lightweight version would be a big mistake. It's designed to be a brute.

I am down for this depending on the final price. KF did a forum knife with a Barkie (that was sweet) that was well out of my price range, so I didn't participate. I don't think there would be any problem selling all 600 as long as the price is in the $100-140 range. While new to EDC Forums, I've been a Spyderco fan for about 13 years. The first time I've really heard about EDC forums was yesterday when somebody posted about this knife over on the spyderco forum.

The Manix 2 has been a great seller and has been released in many sprint runs, almost all of which have sold out almost instantly and now command a premium on the secondary market. They've released:

S90V full flat grind blade and carbon fiber scales, 400 pieces ~$190 street
S30V full flat grind blade and blue G-10 scales, 500 pieces ~$140 street
CTS-XHP full flat grind blade and foliage green G-10 scales, 1000 pieces ~$130 street
154CM hollow ground blade and pink G-10 scales, 500 pieces ~$90 street

Seeing as how the glow in the dark factor makes this a feature that Spyderco has never used on a knife before, I'd imagine that there should be plenty of demand from outside the forum here and may bring in a bunch of new members (myself being one of those). This forum seems very cool and I look forward to participating often.

If I can get everything worked out I will not be gouging but I want to remind people of this. Here is something someone posted in another thread. This is not the same company but it might be from the same people, I don't know. This material isn't cheap but not as expensive as that.

If you like the idea of a "glow in the dark" knife handle, Knife Kits has some Half-LifeX™ sheets in Neon Green and Neon Blue.
It glows in the dark, brightly, however a 2x9x1/8 sheet costs $70. It's very much like paper micarta.
It uses photoluminescent alkaline earth aluminate and a transition metal element (rare earth) like Scandium (Sc) or lanthanides.

http://www.knifekits.com/vcom/index.php?cPath=40_218_362

Half-LifeX™ is offered as a powder additive for epoxy.

http://www.knifekits.com/vcom/index.php?cPath=49_63_194

This is in no means an advertizement for any company, I just haven't seen it sold anywhere else.

I'm curious about how the logo's going to look etched into this material.
Any chance a 'dirty' rendering could be done by someone with appropriate Photochop skills?

Either way, I'm stoked to have one, just curious about how visible the logo will potentially be.

I'd love one, but can't say yes because of the way things are at work. Too many cut backs, including my pay, to be able to commit to something like this. That and the fact I've never spent more than 50 bucks on a knife in my entire 44+ years. Have been collecting knives (that all get used- no shelf/display knives for me) since I was 10 or 12 though.

Hi!

As a Spyderco fan, I'm definitely very interested in this. I think I probably won't be able to afford one, unfortunately, but I hope it works out and I'd love to get one if I'm able to at the time.

And, as others have said, I really think you have little to worry about as far as selling all of these. Manix sprints sell like the proverbial thermally enhanced breakfast foods.

I hadn't thought about the need to enforce a limit, to ensure everyone has a chance to get one.
That may be something to be considered if these get popular enough.

We certainly don't want someone from another forum (CPF, USN, or similar) to come in, extremely excited about this knife, and buy so many that REAL members can't get one. That would break my heart.

A limit is something to keep in mind, unfortunately. There have been issues in the past with the USN Endura and a couple of the Spyderco Forum knives. Some dealers and individuals like to take advantage of situations like this and forum members miss out sometimes.

1) It's locking and over 3" so it's ruled out for legal UK EDC.
2) It's also a Spyderco which is often so hyped up so much it leaves me highly sceptical, and the blades look odd due to increased size to accomodate the hole
3) Never been a big fan of locking knives anyway - much prefer slippies
4) Never really had a need for jimping on a blade
5) Maximum prefered blade length for me is 2.1/2" for utility (other tasks generally require fixed blade)
6) Glow in the dark is a hit and miss thing with me - only thing GITD that I liked before was a pak-lite
7) Blade material is a big plus.

1 point for - 6 points against

Put the whole lot together in one package - and it looks AMAZING!!!!
Got to get myself AT LEAST one of these - one of those "I'll find the money somehow" purchases, especially as this will aid the forum too.
To buy this direct from JSB including shipping would actually cost me LESS than buying a UKPK from these shores!
Definately count me in, I'll fund it somehow!

Unfortunately, I have seen a few times where other forums do a poll regarding interest, people say they want to participate, but when it comes time to pay up they don't follow through. I would hate to see something like that happen, would hope those who have expressed interest will still order.
Easy for me to say when I still have a job and others have lost their jobs, I know :) .

I'll buy 1 for that price.

Depending on when the order/money is due I might be able to purchase 2 so I can give one as a present.

I put my name down for one before price and details were announced so am confirming that I still would like one after seeing price and details.

I have a thing for glow in the dark stuff and I also wanted a sprint run manix 2, was very disappointed that I couldn't get hold of one of the blue ones.

I hope the production is pushed back into 2011 later than February or I might have to bow out, no job and retirement does't pay too great! Maybe after I can draw social security!?! Will have to see, sorry! I just edited my post to say I'm sure going to try and get one if at all possible!!! They are going to be great!!! Thanks Jon! OK I want one come h--- or high water count me in!

I am fine with the price. Just about where I thought it would land and a great deal for a piece that will help the forum.

Just to confirm, this knife is the one with the rolling ball lock, right? I hope it's not the one with the lockback mechanism.

If it's ball lock, I'll definitely be in for one.

Put me down for 2 @$150 -- seems like a fair price to me given the specs and unprecedented nature of a gitd handled Spyderco. I would also love it if you could continue to communicate the details of this project via email -- without it I would have never known about this! Maybe there could be a pre-sale to forum members before it gets opened up to the public? I'm 1000% confident you will sell 600 pieces instantly. I mostly lurk here and only have a couple of hours a month to do so, so any other advice on how I can ensure my spot in line would be appreciated.

Thanks!!!

Well.... I definitely want one!

An estimated price & availability date would be great so one can have the $$ ready when it comes out.

price is $149.95, and availability is Feb 2011.

Also, this will be plain edged, non-serrated, right? Just wanted to confirm that, along with the ball bearing lock. =)

come to think of it, I might be able to get a few other people to buy 1 or 2 as well. So I might be in for a whole bunch.

Seems to be a reasonable enough price.

Yep....It is the same material in the picture of the Bark River PSK.

Here is a quote from the guy that bought the solid glowing PSK from me.

Some more news. Spyderco is sending me the prototype to photograph and show off.

I am the worlds worst photographer however.

I wonder...Is there anyone in here that does pro-photography work of things like this in the forum? I don't have anything to pay for a photo and I would want the knife back?

I know we have pro-photographers in here but don't know if they do objects in a light box or can do glowing objects well. A photo of it in light and dark would be nice.

I don't see anything wrong with the screen cap.

Are you referring to secondary market prices or what they went for from dealers?

And I'm definitely excited for the glow in the dark. Sounds awesome.

The prices I listed were street prices from dealers when the knives first appeared on the market. The $150 price for the GITD seems reasonable, as it is only a $10 premium over the blue Manix 2 (which was also full flat grind S30V and skeletonized liners). For the extra $10, we are getting a costlier handle material as well as covering the cost of laser engraving the forum logo. I'll get one for sure, maybe even two if funds let me.

Regarding other people worried about them all selling out, I think we're covered, as I think Jon said that he could do a second run of 400 if demand far outstrips supply. That should help keep the speculators at bay and afford the EDCF members a chance to acquire one.

I'm also available to take pictures, but I may be too much of a newbie on the forums here and it looks like smack2000 has it covered and is good at taking product shots. But if he ends up not being able to do it, I'd be happy to help. You can look me up over on the spyderco forums if you want to verify I'm not gonna vanish (same username over there).
