For those of you that do not know about Buffs here is a nice little video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yydanA59X0U

To have a forum buff it will take quite a few for it to be viable.

Here is the price per quantity break down.

A special EDC Logo Original buff price break down.

If the run was for 25 units the cost is very high per unit and I don't think it would be viable. They would be around $40.00 each.

At 50 units the price drops quite a bit but still not competitive with the original buff. They would be $28.00 each

If we can get the run up to 75 units we are looking at $24.50
At 100 units about $23.00
150 units gets the price down to $21.50
If 200 of them where made the price would be $20.00 each.

Here is how I will do this. If there are 75 requested I will order 100 and they will be at the price for runs of 100. If there are requests for 100 I will order 150 and they will be available at the 100 unit price. The more of them that can be ordered and moved the lower the per unit price will be.

There is a poll here but it will be a little different. Vote for the highest price you are willing to pay and if the total quantity gets high enough you will get a lower price. Poll numbers have been a bit of a disaster in the past as sometimes we would get 4 times the votes for something then the members actually wanted (voters with no interest in buying). I don't like this but I am going to make this one a public poll to reduce non-interested voters. If I end up ordering a few to many no harm, if it is way to many that will soak up all the forums resources.

Hi Jon.

Hopefully we can get it down to $21.50

People in the lower price range should not be afraid to vote. It is quantity that pulls the price down and everyone will get the same price :)

JonSidneyB

Well, we are 6% of the way to the $21.50 price in just a few hours. Maybe we will make it.

JonSidneyB

These are the original Buffs. I will dig up information on that one.

We are almost 20% of the way to get the $21.50 price point

About 15 % of the way I think to the $20.00 price point.

As others have said, you can't have too many buffs, and as long as it's that light color I'm in.

I use them when i ride my Harley. Kinda feel naked without them now.

JonSidneyB

What's the shipping arrangement?

Right now for international shipping I charge $10.00 for global priority mail no matter how large the order.

For shipping in the USA it is $5.00 until the order reaches $90.00 at that point I cover the shipping costs for priority mail.

I will have to add up the guys that said more than one sometime. We still have a ways to go for any of the options but we are getting closer. Looks like 35 of 100 for the $21.50 price. So about 1/3 of the way.

Grey background seems to be the most popular choice.

And also I'll have to chime in that my Buff saved my life again: climbing Mt. Fuji with temperature extremes, I wore it to keep my head cool, the sweat out of my eyes and the hair out of my face during the day and over my neck and face during the night to stay warm. And during the really dusty sections, I wore it over my nose and mouth to filter out the grime.

If not for the Buff it would have been a much less pleasant journey.

I'm surprised that there's not as much interest in this thread. Wasn't the original request thread several pages long? Maybe a forum email blast is needed.

Perhaps a new sticky/sub-forum including any on-going (and concluded) threads involving EDCF gear is in order.
Not so much like the store, but before potential items make it to the store.
Might help keep topics like these 'on top.'

Also, I think people might be disregarding other items (the buff) because of the expense and awesomeness that is the GID EDCF knife.

Hopefully we can get more in. More than half the time I do this kind of thing I actually turn a loss for the first three months on it. When we get to a number high enough to try and do this I will be doing this with the sever payment money and rent money. It is one of those things if I don't do anything it is a guaranty of failing, when I do something it is a chance of failing. 100% failing is worse that a chance of failing.

Not likely we can pull this off by years end. We are at at around 80 total but reduce that by 30 so about 50 people say they are willing at the 75 request price.

We will be hard pressed to get that number up by then.

Just curious when this might be happening? I noticed a few posts ago we were almost at 100, what is the goal number?

There are severl goal numbers. If we can hit any of them and the requesters follw through we can do this.

We have a total of 80 that voted but at varying prices. At 100 units the price is $21.50. We don't have 80 people at the $21.50 price as 16 people are only willing to pay $20.00. That makes us only at 64 people willing to pay at the $21.50 price.

To get to $21.50 price I would need to buy 150 of them but would have 100 requests. That would leave me 5 units in inventory that I hopefully could clear inside of a year.

At 64 requests at that price I have not included those asking for two fo them. I am in hopes that those that get two of them will make up for those that voted but never buy.

At all price points it is too risky to give it a try with the numbers we have now.

In other words, it's in our court, not jon's. C'mon, people: we need more numbers! Have we sent out a forum-wide email about this yet?

I might pick up one or two more than planned just to support your venture. Nothing wrong with having a few of these on hand to use as gifts either! ;D

On a side note, are you going with the color scheme as depicted in the OP? I like the colors and think you should stick with them, but I seem to remember that being a point of discussion earlier. One thing I want to add is this. If you're going to flip the logo every other row, make sure it's a consistent pattern: the picture shows some rows being flipped and sometimes keeping the same orientation as the rows above/below it, and it really bugs me. I think consistently alternating the orientation every row would look good.

Thanks again for all your work on this, Jon!

I am about possibly putting another plan in effect. I am considering having everything set up with Buffs so I can pull the trigger on this at will.

I tried to contact Buffs today but it seems they where closed. I am going off of memory but I think the lead time on Buffs is two weeks, I need to talk to them to confirm. I am going to see if I can kick off a pre-sale of these at the same moment I start collecting on the Manix-2 run. One reason is I think a hand full of the guys on the other list will pick one up. I will put up the rent money and forum payment money to get the Buffs done but we can recover from that as orders come in on the Buffs and once I get Spyderco paid that revenue will undo any possible damage pulling the trigger on the Buffs might do if they do not move well.

In a nutshell I am going to see if I can kick off the Buffs at the same time as the Spyderco's. This is all conditional on what Buffs tells me when I call them.

How about down payments on these?
That could give momentum to the store, and when the buffs come in, we just pay the remainder + shipping
This way Jon does not have to put his money in this for all of us - we all pay a bit instead of him paying a lot
And if for some reason the buffs don't happen, well, we just have some credit with the store, that ain't so bad either :)

what do you think?

The Buffs are going to happen :)

My plate has been a little full so the time line on things are a bit off. :(. I lost a day unexpectedly on the New Years day birthday surprise. Errors would not let me get to the server, had to do stuff to become current with records for the State, then I three days where I really could not do anything at all. I had been avoiding going to the doctor for months and it caught up with me in a bad way.

I think we will have buffs in about 4-5 weeks which should put them before the Spidies by probably one or two weeks.

They should be ready in 4-5 weeks. I have 200 being made, I will bump it up or reorder if needed. We have a little less than 100 requests last I looked so there will be plenty when they arrive. So far 7 have been bundled with the knives.

Jon, which version of the buff are these ?
the original, Merino or UV protective (coolmax) one ?

looking forward to this one, although i will have to get a couple of other things from the store while im paying for shipping

I have a blue Coolmax one at the moment, with the Southern Cross on it, and i find i am wearing it most days either as sun protection, or wetting it to keep me cool

Does this mean it's ACTUALLY backordered or does the store simply list anything not in stock as backordered? And should I preorder one? When would my credit card be charged?

No need to hurry on this. I will let everyone know when they arrive. I actually keep no CC information and the CC information actually never is on my site. It runs through Authorize.net without me ever seeing the number or the number ever appearing on my server. Since I am set up like that CC charges happen at the point of the transaction. The only reason I put them out right now is so people getting the Glowing Manix 2 could add them to their order if they wanted.

I am kind of impressed. I have never seen FedEx move like this on economy rate shipping. Hopefully I didn't Jinx it.

I actually ordered 200 of them so the price would be $20.00 each. The greater the number ordered the lower the price. Several where presold. I am 48 units away from break even. I think once I have them in hand it will not take too long to reach the break even point.

Just got my EDCF Buff! First impressions of the unwashed Buff: the fabric is stiffer and rougher, and it doesn't stretch along its length as much as my other Buff. I'm hoping the fabric softens up after going through the wash. It looks like they used a different fabric as well as a different process though. The edges look like they were finished with a hot knife-like tool to prevent fraying. The print looks great, and I'm really glad the color isn't black, as it would make it hotter during summertime use. I'll try it out after it goes through the wash!

dumb question . . . anyone know if the merino wool buffs can be printed with the EDCF logo ? I would very much like to own a EDCF branded buff but I can't wear the original fabric as I'm allergic to polyester.I was thinking of maybe purchasing a wool buff and attaching a velcro patch to it but it's just not the same you know.

I got my two when my manix came in. Very cool peice of cloth. I tried a couple of different styles of wearing it in the mirror just for fun. Not ever owning one I can kindof see that it's a little stiff from being printed on. Will wash them before putting them in my bags. Thanks Jon.

I kind of wished I had done the merino wool in the first place but the higher price worried me a bit.

I would actually like to try it but the buffs run looks like it might have been a mistake.

I've been hand washing mine, & imo it does soften up with use/washing. The edges have also rolled, but I expected that to happen as it would with any blanket without binding.

So the lack of lengthwise stretching is also in my nonprinted Buff. It is gradually softening up. I'm going to take it on vacation and use it more and see how it does. The edges do seem different though. My nonprinted one doesn't seem like it was cut/sealed with a hot knife. Not a big issue, but it's interesting that they changed their processes. Perhaps it's what is always done on the printed designs.

I have a printed one with unfinished edges and a merino one with sewn finished edges. I wear the printed one nearly every day for more than a year now and I have seen no degradation. These things are great!
