View Full Version : POLL: What would you choose for an EDCF Spyderco? - RUN-OFF!

Here's the run-off poll from the data made available in Jon's EDCF Spyderco (http://edcforums.com/index.php?topic=30744.0) thread and our first poll (http://edcforums.com/index.php?topic=32389.0). These are the top two options that were voted on for each category.
As mentioned in the previous poll, since Jon has allowed us members to decide this knife configuration, I'm sure he won't object to this poll. But, please know he has the right to do so at any time and take his own poll. I'm just trying to help out.
Rules:
Please vote once and choose only one option for each category.
You are allowed only six votes, one for each category, so voting for both options in a given category will disallow voting for another category.
No write-in votes, please!
You are allowed to change your vote but please know this may skew the results later.
If anyone has any questions or concerns, please let me know.
Disclaimer (For the sake of Jon, the forum, and Spyderco, I am adding this blurb. If in appropriate, mods please delete.): Hopefully this will give Jon and Spyderco an idea of the knife the majority desires so please be open to interpretation as not all options may be available in every configuration. Basically, the knife configuration that the majority picks may not be the knife made but will most likely be as close as Jon and Spyderco can agree on.
I'll leave this poll running until we can decide that enough votes have been counted so vote fast!
Thanks for playing!

I want an exotic steel, no matter the configuration. As I noted before, CPM 3V or M4 would be ideal. Flat ground, of course. They would probably be black coated for corrosion resistance.

Anyway............
Thanks for doing the start-up stuff on this. I got my vote in, now to wait and see what develops from the choices listed!
Narrowing it down gets us that much closer to reality.

This would make a perfect addition to all of the EDCF folks Christmas lists. Is there any way the poll could be done and the kinfe ready for that? I actually had a Dragonfly on my list, I'd much prefer an EDCF version, especially if Jon gets the proceeds.

Thanks for organizing a runoff heathah. This can provide Jon and Eric with the market assessment they need to proceed.
This will be a cool offering and a great way to support the forum.

I am going to make you all aware of the something exists that some of you might not know about. My fear is that I might be creating turmoil in this thread but even mentioning it. :P
Ok, my canned anti-turmoil speech. I have stayed out of the selection process since this is your knife....besides this takes it off me if your choice does not win. ;D
Ok, the potential turmoil. There is a G-10 that I didn't know existed until recently. It is GID G10. From what I hear the heat from your hand can get it glowing or it can be charged by light. It is quite a bit more expensive then regular G-10.
Some of the PSKs that are being made will have this stuff as the handle. That will be the first that we have seen of this stuff. If there is interest in my checking on GID G-10 I will ask Spyderco if they will do it. If there is no interest in this I will drop the idea. :)
Ok...I am going to go hide and stay out of this until you guys are finished.

Me too.
I can't wait for my PSK w/ GID spacers. A GID Spyderco forum knife would be amazing too.

GITD g-10 would be pretty sweet I think.
It would definitely be unique.

My requirement - this knife needs to be a user - What exactly is in the G10 that makes it glow?

What's with orange? I do not believe there is a more vibrantly ugly color. I've just never been able to determine what this fascination with orange is. Hell, you can't even find a word to rhyme with it! THAT'S HOW BAD ORANGE IS!
Personally I don't want to see another Orange handled knife...not always good to advertise you are carrying...grey is much more low key.

:iagree: Orange is not a very attractive color. I can get on the bandwagon with all the other selections that are winning, but I will have to give an orange handle some serious thought.

My first vote was for the gray or carbon scales. After considering it, I've come to the following conclusions.
Also, I think the D'fly should be Orange(that's my vote) but not necessarily the Delica(That's probably what you're envisioning; Like I'm envisioning the D'fly).
I like the GID scales idea.
For me, this knife will be in the bag I EDC, maybe the bottom of a pocket or in my box at home; not necessarily put-away or a shelf queen, but probably not sitting at the top of my pocket. This is supposed to be a forum knife, a tool that has the logo and says a little something about the forum and its members. We're not ninja's so I don't see the harm in having a 'fun' knife that will function as needed, when needed; not necessarily a perfect(concealed) EDC but a strong well balanced tool in its own right, meant to show character and purpose.
I don't have any orange knives or tools, so if I'm going to get one, I want it to be for more than to simply have something orange. Orange is never my first choice of color for a regular EDC (less I were a medic) but I don't think this knife should be considered a regular EDC tool. Of course it can and will be EDC'd by some; That's the point.
It's a useful tool, but it's a somewhat special tool with a somewhat special meaning.
IMO, if you're carrying a sharp, and it needs to be inconspicuous, don't carry an orange knife in a visible position. "The right tool for the right job." Meaning, if you need to be inconspicuous the knife/clip shouldn't be visible in the first place.
If, for whatever reason, you're considering this as your main/only EDC, there may be better choices than the special knife we're assembling. I don't think the purpose of this knife is to replace your EDC. It's meant to stand out/alone because it represents something. IMO, the personality of the forum and its members.
I wouldn't order a special exotic-finish "forum" Atwood tool then ask to have it refinished in black because I wanted to inconspicuously carry it around... If it's meant to be special, make it special.
I will, however, concede that I would like to have a black(dark) knife with the EDCF logo. I think the emphasis on the forums and individuality would be lost, but I would EDC it.
Anyway, those are my $.02.

When the Bark River PSKs ship out we will know more about GID G-10.
A couple of them will be full GID-G10 and several will have GID-G-10 spacers. I understand the heat from your hand rubbing on it can it glowing.
I think after the people who have that report in we will have a good idea how good this stuff is.

Well mine should have 4 GITD spacers so I'll certainly chime in with my thoughts.
Between the engraving, the custom buy, the cool GITD G10, what do we guess this bad boy will be running for? $60-$80 range? $100-$150 range?

Well, it will be 3 weeks tomorrow from the time this poll was started and we've only had 105 votes.
Here's where we stand with the majority of votes so far:
MODEL: Delica - 58 (55%)
STEEL: S30V - 61 (58%)
BLADE: Stonewashed - 68 (65%)
HANDLE: G-10 - 79 (75%)
COLOR: Orange - 62 (59%)
CLIP: Wire (Ti) - 69 (66%)
Since it seems like the color is throwing most people off, would it be possible to do a run half orange, half grey. Or, possibly even three different colors as Jon did mention GITD as a possibility: 1/3 Grey, 1/3 Orange, 1/3 GITD.
Just thinking out loud here...
Thanks!

Heath, thanks for keeping this bumped. Sure, once it is actually available lots of people here and guests from other forums will want one, but with a minimum order of 200, only 105 votes is not confidence-inspiring. Also, not 100% of the voters will buy. Still, we should not lose sight of the fact that an S30V Delica (or Dragonfly, it ain't over yet) will attract a LOT of demand :ready:

Personally I think a lot of people would like a design similar to some of the newest Spyderco's: The Cat or the Chicago.
It's a liner-lock, smaller blades but wide and long enough handles for any cutting task.
The deep set Wire pocket clip is excellent for carrying it everyday.
The steel is cpms30v which is remarkable.
I'm sure no one will agree with me but it's worth a shot.
Here are some links to the knives for more details:
Chicago (http://yourcornerstore.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=30243)
Cat (http://yourcornerstore.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=30242)
Just had to throw my two cents worth in.

I really like special runs of Spydercos, I have a few of the forum knives from Bladeforums and they have been great.
I hope we can go ahead with one.

I am in hopes we can get some good reviews of how the GLO-G10 is working out and if it would be what we would want in an EDCF Spyderco.

Hey guys. I got one of the PSK knives with full GID scales and wanted to let you know my impressions. First of all even if it did not glow it is a cool color. Somewhere between lime and jade green. It is certainly not the sickly white that plagues a lot of GID stuff. I charged mine with a coin cell for about 30 seconds and it glows very brightly. Enough to be useful if your eyes are night adapted. I have not had it long enough to do a "run time" test to see how long it glows. I also have not tried to activate it with heat either. I will try it out tonight and let you know what I find. In the hardness department it doesn't seem to be any different than standard G-10 so I have no questions about its durability. I posted a couple pics in the PSK thread if anyone is interested. One is under regular light and one is highlighted with a CREE UV light.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but I would go along with anything that will get this moving. Orange, pink, GITD, it's all good.

Any color is fine with me. I was mostly interested in avoiding the obtuse saber grind of the Delica. However, if it is a G-10 Delica, perhaps that means that we can get a flat grind like the factory G-10 Delica.

Two complaints about this knife.
Isnt G10 a lot heavier then FRN?
S30V is a great steel but be we all know the price will go up a lot. Also I think S30V is not a good choice because of how hard it is to sharpen.

I played with the G-10 scales last night. You can get it to glow with hand heat, but it is not very bright. I didn't try higher heat like a fire might provde to see if it would glow more brightly. For a runtime test I charged the scales with a CREE UV light for one minute. After an hour they were still glowing pretty bright. After 1 1/2 hours they had dimmed signifigantly.

It looks like this poll has run it's course. I've been communicating with Jon a bit and he suggested we move on from here.
This new poll merely compiles the highest ranking option for each voting category of our previous polls into the EDCF Spyderco choice and allows final voting for only the handle color.
So, just to summarize, we have chosen the Spyderco Delica, Stonewashed S30V Blade, G-10 Handle, and Ti Wire Clip. The two remaining handle choices are GiTD and Orange. So, visit the link below and vote your hearts out, if only once. ;)

Thanks!
