Greg
JonSidneyB
09-22-2009, 08:01 PM
It is made from tempered steel (I don't know which steel). The center is going to be covered printed art. It will be clear dome like you see on the ones that Wenger has.
These will not be very expensive. I am waiting on the Invoice to see all of my costs.
I hope one of the first persons that gets one of these will take a photo that is suitable for the store ;D

Will the center portion where the rings attach have a clip?
JonSidneyB
09-22-2009, 08:09 PM
It is way too tiny for a clip.
I have used this design for a long time but the ones I have had were made from pot metal rather than steel. They came apart rather easily. These are a lot tougher than the others I have seen.
I used to use the ones from Fossil. What I like about the is you can quickly change the load out on your keychain. I kept one on a little tree on the dresser with the items I didn't wan to carry that day and the other went into the pocket.
You can attack a chain or clip on one of the split rings easy enough. These are small items. The head of my house key has a slightly wider foot print than this device.
Here is one that I even carried a keychain revolver on. The one in the picture is by Fossil. These are better built and tougher. Look how huge those clips look next the the Key device.

The Bison Design's "Key Circle" is $7.00 at their online site. I don't know about retail outlets. The circle itself is anodized aluminum - much less than type III - the key split rings are steel and all the rest seems to be pot metal, which wasn't a problem except on the main clasp where all the weight rests.

On that note Jon, you should do a youtube video showing how it works (or get someone else to do so). Its something that would be easy to show in a couple of seconds but isnt easy to describe in words.

Mine arrived a couple of days ago.
Very nice, heavy construction. the individual holders are easy to remove and reattach.
I did quite a bit of manipulation of the rings, moving stuff from one ring to another, and none of them loosened up. Cheap split rings can open up slightly after much manipulation, leaving a small gap. These didn't do that.
If you're considering one, go for it.

My order of three just arrived this week. These are great.
I ordered three based on the following thinking:
a. I can support the Forums.
b. When I find something I like, I know that if I don't order several, I'll never be able to find them again should I want more or a replacement.
c. This way I get extra ring parts to add more things to the central disk I plan to EDC.
d. If I'm paying for shipping, I might as well double or tripple the order.
I'll get photos up on the weeeknd.
My only regret is I didn't have this a few weeks ago. I seem to have lost my Valiant Concepts SS pen. I suspect the gizmo clip got twisted in my pocket. Now I have to order another one.
Anyway, I'm thrilled with these little devices. Great workmanship and pure utility. The complete opposite of most things you run across in your day.

I keep my car key by itself on a separate ring because I need to QD it a few times a week when I run.  Even when loaded, the whole package is a lot less bulky than I anticipated  -- in pocket, it kind of collapses down on itself to make an organized, non-tangled bundle.
After just a few minutes of handling, my wife wants me to order one for her.  :smitten:

Anyone else have difficulty with the separate ring/pins coming off the central disk inside your pocket? Mine tends to leave a sub-ring in the pocket on occasion. I purchased three of these units so I've just swapped my EDC tools (prybar, RES-Q-ME, Leatherman Micra and my 'If found, please call ..." Dog Tag) to see if I may have just a loose centre disk.
I love this thing and I hope I can sort out this issue. I've already lost my Valiant Concepts pen due to what I think was a bad clip and I was hoping these key chains were more secure.

I've swapped out the first centre ring and the second one seems to work much better (at least so far). The first one has a rough opening latch. The new one slides open and closed under my thumb nail very smoothly. The third one (not out of the bag yet) also opens and closed smoothly. The first one felt rough, kind of like it wanted to hang open a little or at least it didn't seem to close smoothly. This may be the problem with that first ring. I'll let you know if that solves it.

The RES-Q-Me cost me 25 cents and the Leatherman cost me $2.00, both at the local Airport charity sale.
The pry bar has a bit of black Gaffer's tape on the tip to keep it from chewing holes in my pants pockets.
Under the cloth is my 'If found ...' dog tag. Once my new Maratac flashlight comes in, it will become the 5th item on the ring.
Lastly, once I order a replacement, I'll stick a Valiant Concepts pen on there to round out the set.

Mine stay attached so far, in pocket or pack. Is it an issue with a weak trigger spring failing to hold the gate closed? I can't imagine that some of the individual ring knobs are pulling directly out of the track - it would have to bend those rails pretty good and/or squash the knob.

Mine stay attached so far, in pocket or pack. Is it an issue with a weak trigger spring failing to hold the gate closed? I can't imagine that some of the individual ring knobs are pulling directly out of the track - it would have to bend those rails pretty good and/or squash the knob.
It is an issue of the posts that protrude from one half of the holder into holes on the other half of the holder. During assembly they are 'staked' to create a flange (rivet-style) that holds the halves together. If the staked flange is not large enough (or staked off-center as in my case) it allows the two halves to pull apart a very small amount, which allows the ball shaped thingee's (still can't come up with a name for those things - okay 'ring knobs' it is) to slip out of their track. I've smacked a center punch down the middle of the post on mine that loosened up and I'm giving it a test now.
BTW, Jon is sending me a new one... can't complain about that customer service. O0
Here you can see the 'staked flange' on the post on the left is not making contact with the counter-sink in the holder.

Just ordered two of these (one for myself and one for the husband) and two kubotans. Look good.

Ah, thanks for the detail mikeinrancho -- so the track is essentially flaring when those pins don't hold the two halves tightly together. I have not had my celluoid logo off and didn't realize the two halves were held together with peened pins.

I think the problem in my case was one of the pins was peened off-center so it wasn't getting a full 'grip'. I've since re-whacked both pins with a center punch and tried pulling them apart and they are going nowhere. I have used it for 2 days now with nothing falling off. I'll give it a few more days then put the cap and sticker back on.

I just did the same thing with the one ring I had that was tossing connecters. I peeled off the sticker and its plate, peened the loose rivet a touch and I oiled the mechanism with a couple of drops of oil for good measure. Now it is nice and tight and I just have to glue the EDC sticker back on.

I'm glad I read this thread, as I was just going to post about my key chain dropping keys. I'll try peeling the label and peening the rivets.
Here is a pic of how I carry my EDCF Keychain with a MicGizmo Clip. A leatherman micra is in the watch pocket on my jeans.

Same problem here. How did you remove the "plate" underneath the EDCF sticker?

The "plate" is glued down, it's not very thick. I took one of mine apart out of curiosity and was able to pry that up with an exacto knife.

Thank you Jon! I just got mine yesterday. Been carrying the Bison Designs caddy for about a year with no problems until the day I ordered. The thumb stud fell out, and most of the parts (spring, and whatever else) went missing. The EDCF model is much nicer, from the gate to the way the carrier is put together. Only con is that the Bison rings are a little more stout. But, still a nice offering.

One of mine started dropping items too recently. As I had a backup, I simply swapped it out. I am not keen on tearing these apart to "peen"...whatever that is. I figure I will just order a few more and if they fail, replace them.

Ive had mine for about 2 months and i randomly lose stuff off of it. Mine isnt springing apart as much as a couple of the ring nubs work their way past the gate because the gate has some slop in it.
I just peened one of mine successfully. It tightens it right up, hopefully this will hold for awhile as I do like the system.
I have owned one of these keyholders for many years and it works very well in practice. In the 15+ years I've used it, I have had no problems with it whatsoever. Looking at some of the posts above, I think I know why some of these new ones are giving trouble: The main circular component on mine (The part that the "pins" go into) is one piece. This means that it can't separate which means the pins cannot fall out. I have never had anything get detached in error. I would think that separating this Circular component into 2 pieces is a design flaw, although I understand that it would make the key holders easier to manufacture.
The only mark on mine is the patent number. If you are interested, these are the original patent details: http://ip.com/patent/US5224366
One problem with the design is that if you loose some "pins", it is difficult to find replacements; I have only 4 "pins" remaining and dread to think of loosing any more. If anyone out there have any spares they could post to Ireland - my pins have a 4mm ball size - name your paypal price!
P.S. My First post here - great Forum!
This is two of them that has had a problem.
I am going to send you a replacement. I need to try and find out if this is a case of a couple of lemons or not. There are more than 80 of them out there.
Has anyone else had any problems?
Hello, Jon
Sorry for digging up an old thread.
I placed my order for two of the EDFC Keychains on Tuesday by midnight and received them on Friday. Thank you for the very fast delivery. This keychains are great and solid.
Unfortunately, there is a problem. One of the keychains has only one connecting rod in the shape it's supposed to be: a (almost) spherical head and cylindrical groove body (see pictures in post #77 in this thread).
The other four rods have flattened heads the half size of the original and a conical groove. This makes me afraid to attach keys to this rods, because they definitely will be lost!
