Some of you have noticed that the Gray EDCF version of the Tuff-Writer is a little different then theirs.

The Gray ones did not sell that well. 29 people voted for gray so I thought they would move quite well.

The original Tuff-Writer is very popular so it is a bit of a mystery why these didn't move.

We can try different colors of the EDCF version but to do this I need commitments for at least 80 percent of them to sell. The remainder would go into inventory.

If 24 people want Maroon it can happen. If 24 want Blue it can happen. If we do both colors it will have to be 15 and 15. This can be done if at least 80% move in total but the run would have to be 15 and 15. Black could possibly happen but it would have to 24 to do this out of an order of 30.

I will post pictures of the Gray version on a moment.

These will be shorties and will have no markings on them.

I would be in for one in maroon as long as it's not the style shown in this thread (i.e. I prefer the style on their website)

Ok, sorry. The style shown above is...ummm...uhh...nevermind. I won't say what I'm thinking, but it is not the look I'm after. :(

That's ok

As a learning tool for me. Can you tell me what you don't like about it?

I know things like this can be hard to explain. Honest opinions help the best so we can know how to address things and respond better. Is the marketing wrong? Wrong choice in colors?

Ok, well I will try.

I think the reasons your pens didn't move well is because in this thread
http://edcforums.com/index.php?topic=25634.102

you promised people the same pen that Tuffwriter sells (same style, etc.) but in the exclusive color. When they showed up with that ribbed feature on it instead of the knurling, that may have scared off people that were "in" until they saw the finished product was significantly different than originally promised. I am not trying to speak for everyone, but I know it was a complete deal-breaker for me.

I figured the change may not have been your choice and tuffwriter may have imposed it on you so that yours would differ from theirs, but all people saw was, "Oh...wait...that's much different than what I thought it would be..."

I think the design looks rather effeminate to put it a polite way...but I didn't want to post that here. That is just my opinion. Something can appear innocuous without appearing effeminate. I prefer the knurled aspect or something similar. The design they chose for yours isn't even close in appearance and I guess that's what they were going for?

I'm sorry. I did want to like these, but they are not my style at all.

Thanks for the input DSC,

Anyone else have any opinions? Also if there is enough interest we can get a variety of colors.

Thanks
Jon

"Oh...wait...that's much different than what I thought it would be..."

Yeah, that's pretty much what I thought when I first saw pics of the actual pen. That, and "oh no, what did they do to it?"

But I went ahead and bought one anyway, and I'm really glad I did. It's definitely one of the coolest pens I have, and it turned out not to look that bad in person. After a brief getting used to period, I don't mind the looks at all. The ribbing is much more pocket friendly than heavy-duty knurling, which is a good thing since I carry it in my shirt pocket and shirts are generally made of fairly light materials, which could get chewed by knurling. Besides, it still has knurling in the area where you actually grip it when writing. It has very good grip and balance, I actually like to write with this pen.

That said, I do have a wish list, if there's ever a second version. First, it's not a shiny pen, but I'd still like it to be a more matte grey. Second, it would be nice if it was a little shorter, even just by half an inch.

I like my EDC version. True, I was not expecting the particular design change but I find it has a nice "futuristic", contemporary look to it and also I don't worry about wearing my pockets out with rough knurling. BTW the anodizing on these feels really nice and thick.

For those that are turned off by the grooving, I'd just like to say that when I first saw the new style I was worried about it's gripping characteristics. After holding it I decided that I really like the grooving, though I'll admit I haven't felt the knurled version to compare it to.

If you don't like the cosmetics that's one thing, but if you're afraid it might not grip as well as you'd like, you might be pleasantly surprised.

So is there any interest in the design in maroon, dark, blue, or black?

If you were to design and EDCF version of a defense pen what would it be like?

I just got the pen, but I like it already.
yes the knurling would make a better grip in SD situation but other then that its a great pen..

If I were to design a defensive pen, I would make the end more blunt then pointed. I would think a hard strike from a pointed tuff writer would penatrate skin pretty easy. A blunt tip would send a painful defensive message without the blood. I would also prefer the more traditional knruling over the grooves.

A good point, it wouldnt take much force to penetrate skin..

Jon, maybe I'm in the minority given that the first run of pens didn't sell too well, but ... I have both one of the regular tuff-writers with knurling, and one of the EDCF gray ones. The EDCF one grips just as well, looks more innocuous, and (IMO) looks better. And as mentioned, the ribbing doesn't chew up pockets. All in all, I like it so much I asked Tuff Writer about putting out other pens in ribbed versions, but he said he wanted to keep it an exclusive for you. In short, I liked the original so much it retired all my other pens, and depending on how poor I feel, I'm probably in for a maroon or blue provided it doesn't differ too much from the first run.

Unlike Valo, if there were a variation in the length, I'd prefer .25-.5" bigger, not shorter

I wish these would have been a success. The gray got the most votes so it was a bit of hope that the other colors might get some interest. This became a costly mistake.

The interest level of this makes any more not that likely. I think Tuff-Writer did really try to help the forum out, it just didn't work out.
