EDCF Self-Defense Pen Information.

These will be manufactured by Tuff-Writer. These pictures show one in black and one in silver. The pen that will be available through the forum will be a Darkish Gray.

The pen will look like this except for the color. These will be sterile with no markings.

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o319/jonsidneyb/tuffwriteredcf.gif

5.75 length in the closed position.

The weight is 1.5 oz.

I will be updated on the time frame soon.

Right now I will give a long estimate of 4-6 weeks. It probably will not be near that long.

If you want Black or Silver you can get that directly from Tuff-Writer. If you would like Gray those will come from me.

As I get updates from Tuff-Writer I will post them here. ;D

One of the things I like about this pen is that it looks nice as a pen on its own. It will be a very attractive functional pen even if never called on for its design purpose. ;D

I think the best multi-function items are the ones that don't compromise on at least one of the functions, better yet if it is both functions.

EDCDepot is ran by sharpdogs, he is a member of the forums but it's his own website. These are being sold by Jon and the funds go to the forums so they will be available at JSBurleysflashlights.

He'll keep us updated as to when they will be available(I'm sure he'll post here before they go on his website and I'm sure he'll have enough to go around for a few months.

Take care

Right now just wait. I am waiting to hear back from Tuff-Writer on Monday and Tuesday. When I get a time line I can then do more. I have been trying a few different unrelated things but most of it is future things. I am going to try and keep various thing for the future on track but I am going to have to start focusing more on the present.

I will post again here when I know more about timing and can be more specific about what to do.

Thanks

I just got off the phone with them. They are telling me 4 weeks. There will be 30 in the first batch. If these are able to move then a full batch will be ordered rather than some being pulled from their regular production run.

Can you confirm if the $86.36 price listed below is accurate? I am very interested in one of these and am about 95% sure I will be purchasing one. I took a look at their website and it looks to be an incredible product both in function and design.

So, I think it's safe to say that you can +1 me on this order too.

I am going to open these up to any what want to pre-order. The first batch will be 30 pens. They did tell me they thought these barrels were turning out nicer than the last batch even though the last batch was nice.

I was told that currently Tuff-Writer is out of pens themselves when you try and checkout. It looks like they are getting good demand for their products.

Again These pens will be Gray, not black like the picture.

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o319/jonsidneyb/tuffpen.jpg

You can pre-order here defense pen (http://www.jsburlysflashlights.com/cgi-bin/ccp51//cp-app.cgi?usr=51I7472954&rnd=4717097&rrc=N&affl=&cip=70.254.228.26&act=&aff=&pg=prod&ref=tuffwritersterilegray&cat=pens&catstr=HOME:pens)

I didn't plan it this way. My site has free shipping on any order above $90.00 A couple of McGizmo, Clips, an EDCF patch, or if you were thinking of a Boker or something that will put you over the top for free shipping.

Hey Jon,

Maybe this has been covered..sorry if so...

What color of grey are these? Are they beadblasted or painted grey?

Also, do the caps fit securely on the back of the pen using it to write with? Does it fit snug like a fisher bullet pen or is it just loose?

Thanks..I'm really wanting one of these!

Fate smiles on me!!!! Went in a draw to get a pencil out last night and knocked somthing over the back of it so had to take all the draws out of the cupboard to retrive it, there at the bottom of the cabinet amongs an assormet of junk was a new and unused Rotring nibless fountain pen! It'd be great if you could do that, and give us a status report on the TW. I know it probably varies from airport to airport, depending on who's checking, but it'd still be nice to have a test run on it's inconspicuousness.

All have been sent out except for two of them.

I made a horrible mistake on two of the guys orders. They ordered a couple of other items with these. I had two emergency moves in a row and lost some inventory in the process. I counted up everything and adjusted my store inventory by the count. I forget that two of the pen purchasers had Boker knives with the pens. I was going to hold those two orders until the Bokers arrived but now I think that is not right. I will send the remaining two orders then send them a second package with the Bokers in them.

When erm... using this pen, there are no rotational forces, so the anti rotation effect of the knurling is not needed, and I think that since the grooving is deeper than the knurls, and seems to fit the hand well, it may work better.
I have not felt the knurled version so it's hard to say, but the grooving did feel a lot better than I thought it would. It also has the side benefit of looking slightly more innocent.

I'd like to hear from someone who has both.

I have both. I'm not sure the grooving looks much more innocent, as it does give the body a slightly "sharp" look. But, on the other hand, it does look less like something that is necessarily made to give you a good grip while, uh, exerting force through it.

I didn't get any pics, (rough night with the bambino), but I did get to use it and test it out a bit.

As a pen: Nice balance. With the cap laid aside (doesn't stack too well), it has just enough heft for me to feel like a good pen (I like heavy pens, though). The threads are smooth and fit very nicely. The cartidge is what we have come to expect of fisher. Good, utilitarian ballpoint that you can trust will work. nothing fancy, nothing you just can't wait to write with, but it does its job admirably, and does it every time...a trait I have come to appreciate more and more.

As an impact tool: Using the sharply tapered end as impact area, this is a formidable tool in the hands of someone with any skill or knowledge of using a short straight force multiplier. Into a replicated semi-soft tissue area (like the areas around shoulder blades and ribs), it actually penetrated to a scary degree. Shots into replicated ribs and forearms with force were capable of fracturing said bones. Skin over hard areas would be torn badly by the point. This is multiplied by the ability to (if desired, with well kown trade offs and benefits) place thumb on the rounded end. Bones or joints underneath could be damaged. This makes this point a serious addition to one's "carry in plain sight" self defense, but as such, must...MUST be considered a dangerous weapon, and only used if the situation calls for such an escalation of force. One must be capable of making this judgment, and be prepared for the consequences. Used as a joint manipulator or pain compliance tool, the tapered point could be extremely effective in properly trained hands.
The rounded tip, besides not being able to place thumb over the other side, is also clearly less aggressive for joint manipulation or strikes. Using a standard kubaton grip, the lack of knurling only became apparent when extremely forceful hammer fists were applied to a hardened target (bottom of a well settle heavy bag, for example). If a situation was calling for the level of force in these strikes, especially one in which I had made the call that using a self defense tool was justified, I would probably be using the tapered end.

These are just my thoughts. I am a semi-educated (in this area) layman. I have 10 years or so of martial arts training, the past 5 with weapons of various types. Take my opinion for what it's worth.

Overall: I am glad I made the purchase, and I will be carrying this pen often.

Can some of you try and take some good pictures of these? One suitable for a banner, another that would work for store pictures. Perhaps one for some other type of advertising?

Thanks

I'd be happy to, Jon. Any particular backgrounds, suggestions for other items in the picture that you would like? If not, I'll just get creative. I should have the time tonight to be able to get a few uploaded and sent to you.

Same here
Though I suspect it has more to do with the next to useless USPS tracking system than anything else as I've had parcels delivered in the UK that still showed that on the tracking page! On some occasions the sender has managed to get sense out of USPS. Usually takes around a week for international priority packages to get here so not worried, just excited!

I'm pretty sure my pen is sitting in my PO Box - I'm going to make a run this morning and check.

I was going to grope it last night, but I got side-tracked with a new troop.

USPS frequently does not scan a package when you turn them over to them. It is more of a delivery confirmation than a tracking system. I have had many packages not show anything until after the customer has it.

And my tactical nerd bling is complete! ;D

I love this thing - the smooth gray threw me for a bit, but the more I fond...err...handle the pen, the more I like it.

The only changes I made - applied silicone gel to the threads and swapped a Fisher fine-tip cartridge.

Got mine 2 days ago, it arrived promptly about 3 days after I placed my order. First impression, it's a tight strong product that looks innocuous enough that I can use it comfortably in a business environment. I probably wouldn't choose it as my number one writing implement, but I'm real picky in that department. I was an illustrator for many years. But I'll happily use it as a pen for workaday writing, and keep it on hand for defense. I'm looking forward to getting a finer version of the Fisher cartridge.

Have any made it across the atlantic yet? Stil getting the same on the USPS tracking site but no surprise there but slightly more worrying is the fact the package doesn't show up on the parcelforce.co.uk tracking site and international priority mail always does when it arrives in the UK (often that is the first time any tracking system spots it!).
Just a bit concerned as a week to 10 days is normally how long delivery takes, not the time it takes to make it to the UK!

I have to say that I am impressed with this pen. The wide ribbing is a pleasant surprise. It is comfortable in the hand and gives a decent gripping surface. The heft and size are perfect for EDC, and it writes well too!

Don't know about UK, but when I've ordered things from Jon, the packages have pretty consistently taken two weeks to arrive. When the tracking works, it first shows the package waiting for international dispatch at the airport for the first week and after that it takes the week that USPS usually takes. And it may take a day or few to make it through the customs. So don't despair yet.

Did I mention that mine is in the mail too?

I am close to the center of the USA. it usually take three days for something to reach the east coast alone. I am not really sure how long it takes to get to the UK from here but probably 10 percent of the packages I send is to the UK and they have all been arriving. One package to Europe didn't make it, that was to the Netherlands. I will replace packages that do not arrive.

Usually a week to 10 days for the international priority stuff and for about half that time it will show on the parcelforce website even if it is waiting to clear customs etc.
Not despairing yet, maybe all a little slower than normal for some reason.

Received my pen today. :roof: A little lighter and longer (the full size one must be huge) than I expected, but a few light tests on my crappy desk assure me it'll work if I (hopefully not) ever need to use it. Fortunately, the grooving instead of knurling doesn't bother me whatsoever ergonomically, though I do agree with smokelaw1 that it doesn't really help it look more innocent. I was also pretty intrigued with the container that held the pen for some reason...

Dang this thing looks good! With the color and ridges instead of gnurling, it looks more classy than tactical. If any of you were like me and waiting for the first reviews to roll out, I'd advise you not to wait any longer.

Jon, probably too early to ask, but now I'm in the market for a full-sized version. I'd rather have a ridged version than a gnurled version ... are you considering a full sized ridged version at all? I'll wait for an EDCF version if you are.

adriatikfan and davkt,

Have your pens arrived yet. I will send replacements out if they have not. Will send PM

If they did not arrive I think I might know what happened. It is a Little unusual to have more than one package not arrive with the same contents. The container these pens come in let it be known this is a tactical pen. I wonder if it has trouble with customs because of this. I might start wrapping the packages going to countries that discourage self defense items.

Overall, I am very happy with it. The pen will never be my first go-to pen, as I like a rounder and more soft-textured feel for the grip. Here the grip is stable, but coarse, with the ridges under your thumb and forefinger. In the hand, it is very comfortable and easy to hold. Looks nice in a shirt pocket or placket, but not light (as expected).
Thanks Jon!

Hi Jon,
Sorry hadn't checked this thread since the weekend. Just to confirm no sign of mine yet, and thanks for shipping another out as paypal have just confirmed. Tactical pen shouldn't have affected customs but then as you may well have seen on Britishblades one particular customs station has taken to siezing a load of lock knives that appear on the shelves of many UK sporting goods stores without raising a single eyebrow as to their legality so anything is possible!

Well the pen has found a home amongst the assorted edc that lives in my trousers pockets!
The ridges are way more comfortable than they look on the photos and to my eye lend a degree of elegance to the pen. Its certainly a nice pen to write with and does a fine job as a PDA stylus.

I don't think I have left the house without this on me since I got it
My new favorite pen
I have changed the refill for a fine blue, and keep the original black as a spare (I just prefer the blue)
It feels great to write with, and a few people at work have commented on it

I'm not a fan of Fisher refills in general, I realize they let me pretend to be an astronaut but I don't love the writing experience. That said, after changing to a fine blue I'm happy. And as a pen, this one is both classier looking than any of the other "tactical pens" I have, and balances better in writing. It's a constant companion for me as well.

So far I've only carried mine at work, so it's not a true EDC item for me, but I really like it. I think the ridges look odd, but it has proper knurling in the grip area where it counts. Very good grip and balance.

When this started out we were offered a color that was going to be only sold on this forum. To my surprise when I got the pens the design was a little different that meant that we could all types of colors and still be different than TuffWriters current line.

Unfortunately this run has not been a success. The forum store still has to pay the invoice on these. We are stuck in a tough spot. I am stuck making some hard choices. The invoice has to be eventually paid. If I pay the invoice today there is nothing left to make the server payment on June 25th. I can try and buy other inventory and gamble that it can sell out by the 25th and the margin from it hopefully can allow us to cover both the invoice and the forum payment. While I don't want anyone to get one that is not interested in this this was done to try and create cash flow to help pay for the forum but instead it has become a liability. If anyone is interested in these we could use the sales to try and get this invoice paid.

Joe Talmadge

That's a huge bummer. And a surprise, given all the interest in self defense pens in the pen subforum. I can only imagine it's the price. This pen is my top choice overall, over any other I've owned or handled (IMO way better designed than the Hinderer, Benchmade, etc), it should be selling well to all those folks participating in those long threads.
