These will be made for EDCF by TuffWriter.
http://site.tuffwriter.com/Images/IMG_2409c.jpg
These will be the sterile shorty. Our color will be exclusive to EDCF so lets make it a good one.
I know many want something that looks less tactical so here we go. By the way Black is not an option per agreement.
Let the voting begin the majority will rule on this one. EDCF will get only one color so lets make it a good one. I do hope that the voters are people seriously considering owning one.
I personally am torn between Maroon and Gray.
Thanks

Gray is winning quite big. The shade of Gray is what they call Sniper Gray. This being a stealth pen we just dropped the word Sniper.
If the other colors want to win they better start moving.

I see the color on their website but no shorty pen. I take it they are still in production so there is no pics? How does the shorty differ from the "frontline?" or do you have a pic that isn't on their website?
We are talking compleatly sterile right? No Tuff writer or edcforum logo?

The shorty is not on the their website yet. They are in production and some will be reserved for our version. Ours will be sterile, no logo ;D I hope we can reserve enough where we don't have any outages at first. Of course they can't move forward with ours until a color is determined.

There are catalog photos in the "Tuffwriter" thread (http://edcforums.com/index.php?topic=21827.0) - the shorties measure 5.75".
The original "Frontline" measures 6.5".
Gray is fine for me - a happy balance between acceptable tactical and business conservative. ;D
I thought about hot pink just to make sure nobody in my company steals it.

I was going to put a note at the top of the forum to get peoples input but I am thinking maybe that is not a good idea.
What do you think? Those looking for this type of pen will find this poll on their own? My concern is if the general forum sees it we might get votes watering down the ones that really want one.
I also only want to keep the poll open for at the most 48 hours. I want to let them know our color choice as soon as possible.

Thanks Jon,
I live in a place where only dial up is available and I am slowly letting that thread load with all the pics. I will reserve my vote (and commitment) until I search around and see if I can get blue ink refills - I hate black ink.

The original Frontline will accept a Fisher pen cartridge, medium. The Fishers come in both black and blue, usually available at an office supply store.
I don't have official confirmation, but the shorties take the same Fisher medium, so it should be a simple matter of replacing the stock black with a blue cartridge.

According to Jack (via email) , the Shorty takes the same Fisher refill as the original Tuffwriter.
I'm not hard to please or anything but I should point out that the new Shorty's proportion is funny. The cap comprises half the length of the pen as per the photo.

I voted for my favorite color blue even though it probably will not win. I would be in for one, but like some of the other posters, it would be a few month before I could get the funds.
One question about the size. The size is listed in this thread as 5.75 inches. Is that with the cap on in the closed position or on the back of the pen in the writing position?
Right now I carry a fisher bullet pen and find that its length is perfect for me. How much bigger would this pen be compared to the bullet pen?
tmedina
02-17-2009, 11:52 AM
Tuffwriter mentioned the overall length as 5.75 in the other "Tuffwriter" thread.
I assume it's the overall length with cap closed (covering the nib), but for a definitive answer, you'd probably need to go to the source itself - Tuffwriter.

EDIT: Read the website. Hard Anno. Should have read the site before asking the questions! :brickwall:
JonSidneyB
02-17-2009, 01:46 PM
Yep,
It is type 3
Type 3 works best with darker shades of color. There are not samples of the these colors on the pens but this is a known finish. It does not work as well on some alloys as others. The pens are made from 6061 which turns out very nice with type 3. There are examples of these colors on other products. Arc long ago made some red and blue ones and they looked very nice. The dark gray looks very nice as well. On the larger model of the pen they did make them in Gray that they called a sniper Gray. This color is well known on 6061, it is a darker shade.
Thanks
Jon
It's hardly an "exclusive" color if they make one called "sniper gray" which is the same color except they took off the "sniper" part.
I mean, right?
I will not buy one if it is gray. I can guarantee 100% that I would buy one if it is maroon/red.
JonSidneyB
02-17-2009, 01:52 PM
It is not an exclusive color. It will just be that what ever the forum gets for the pens will be exclusive to us on that model. Other products from other companies will of course have that color.
JonSidneyB
02-17-2009, 02:18 PM
Here is what I have from my conversation with Tuff-Writer today.
The 5.75 length is in the closed position.
The weight is 1.5 oz
They will send me a message on the time frame probably Wednesday.
I will be finding out how many they can get us in the first run probably on Wednesday as well.
;D
Tuff-Writer is doing me a big favor to help keep things going. By pulling out a color they could be selling themselves on this model they actually can be reducing sales going directly to them. I congratulate them on that. With companies working with me It looks like I am going to be able to keep things running until I am able to find work again.
I will have to talk to them on what name I use in the store. When people Google Tuff-Writer I don't want to be hurting their direct sales. After I talk to them about that I will know if Tuff-Writer is part of the name in the store or not.
Cheers for Tuff-Writer ;D

I'd prefer a color they aren't already making. I voted blue and that's my first choice, but maroon would be good too. Grey and brown are already their standard colors. If these are going to be special, let's make them a special color.
Cool plan, I am in the market for a sterile shorty Tuffwriter! :highfive:

I'm with the "exclusive color" line of thinking. Will this pen help support EDCF? I think to me that would be one of the best features of this pen: having something cool and relatively exclusive while supporting a great website. :roof:
I'm with the "exclusive color" line of thinking.
Same here and I'm not buying the "exclusive color in this particular model" thing either...maybe I missed it, but I did not see any other red pens in any model by them at all on their website, hence the exclusivity of that color.

(Some colours may be lovely, but buyers who are on the fence because of price will have to opt out of spending a considerable sum on a pen they won't use because of it's lovely_but_hard_to_blend color)
(Just a thought.)

(You know, some (MANY) would argue that red is more innocuous-looking (less threatening) than gray may be perceived to be and THAT may be more important than "blending in"...)

Tuff-Writer very well might be adding many colors for their own line in the future including the ones that you guys want. When starting out sometimes it can be hard to have too many colors at first. It forces you to carry more inventory and if you can't do that and do not have perfect foresight you can end up running out of one color while having a pile of another early in the business. As time goes on if you have a successful product it can be easier and easier to have more and more variety as time goes on.
Most people I think already know who Tuff-Writer is on the forum. They very well might be adding the colors that you guys want themselves over time. There is possibly very little incentive for Tuff-Writer to do this for the forum as it can reduce their direct sales. The job of a vendor is to find customers the manufacturer would not other wise find or to save work on the manufacturers part to not have to handle sales.
Will I create sales for them that they otherwise would not have gotten, I don't really know. I hope that I do as I would want to make it worth their while. With Gray how it would become exclusive to the forum is that on the shorty you will not be able to get it directly from Tuff-Writer. They might have the larger Gray pen but for us they pulled the smaller Gray pen from consideration from their line up.
If they plan on filling out their line of colors it is possible that they could have 10 colors for the larger pen but then only 9 colors for the smaller one as they are offering the forum one pen that is for this forum to make available. They sell well beyond this forum so they may be doing themselves more harm than good.
In defense of Tuff-Writer they and a few other companies and people are working with me. Earlier in this forums life when I talked to companies some didn't want to deal with me at all, they were getting all they wanted from the forum for free and didn't need to deal with me. Tuff-Writer I think is doing quite a bit for me, they are taking one of the Shorty models off the table for their other markets.
While I don't know this for sure I am betting that several colors will become directly available from them, just not Gray shorties.
Could I have other arrangements with Tuff-Writer in the future? I can't tell you that. For the near future where will be a pen that you will be able to get from EDCF that you cannot get from them. Since for not I will only have one pen from them that they will not make for others I have to go with what the majority of potential buyers ask for. Hopefully in the future I can negotiate something else with them that can be exclusive to this forum.

I can't see any of the pictures, but I'm leaning more towards the full length version to be honest. I've just ordered one of the full length sterile black versions, when it get here and I've had a play with it I might order the EDCF one either for me, or more likely for my wife.

I hope what I said made sense in my last post.
Here is some more information.
They are going to pull some pens from their production run to finish differently than the rest of the batch. The first run will not be small being that these are being pulled from an existing run of product. but there will be other runs of more efficient size to follow if I can successfully move the first run. The first batch will be only 30 pens, the second run will be larger if we are successful.
When this first run is ready for delivery there will also be new products directly available from Tuff-Writer. If you want Black, those will you will be able to get them directly from Tuff-Writer, if you want the Silver one, those will be available directly from Tuff-Writer. For those of you that want Gray those you can get directly from me. ;D

Thanks Jon for getting this set up. I think you have explained the exclusive color for the Shorty well. The poll is a great way to gauge the majority interest in what color that should be. In the end some people will not be happy with the color choice, what can you do? It is great that you are trying to generate support money for keeping the forum online through product sales instead of just asking for donations. Members can get a great product and support EDCF at the same time. :highfive:
Yeah, I'm not buying one of these gray ones.
In fact, I think I'm giong to just order a mil-tac because they do currently make them in red.

Let's stay positive here guys!
I don't care for gray either but the money goes to support this website in which we all love. If the majority of the people voted gray then obviously Jon will get more sales from going with gray.
Hopefully when we see more detailed pictures of this gray color then it may turn people on to it.
I for one can't afford one right now because I am on hold for a PSK made by BRKT from Jon.
Hopefully in the near future I will be able to pick one of these.
And finally if you don't have a positive thing to say then I think you shouldn't post because this is going for a good cause.
Thanks Jon for expanding your horizon to knives, pens, and all sorts of other edc goodies in order for us all to have a place to hang out! O0
Take care

Not to start an argument, but of all the places I have worked, i have never seen anyone use a red pen. Well, except for this one secretary... but that was more like pink. At least around me most people use black, gray, blue or plastic transparent pens.
Are you just making a statement? Because I really don't see how that has anything to do with what I was saying. Which is fine...I just don't get your point...
And FWIW, many higher-end pens come in red and some lower to moderate priced ones as well. I've seen them often, but obviously we don't know the same people.

02-18-2009, 05:04 PM
What I'm trying to say is that, instead of a bright but innocuous-looking color, a common, dim color goes much more unnoticed. As for the high-end pens, sure, many of them are all about showing-off. Hey, some even have gliterring diamonds on them! Not the result I'm looking for here.

I cant buy anything UNTIL we get something us "lesser" folks can afford I gotta shirt ;D but thats it for now I cant afford the pen therefore I am NOT voting. I have a grey BM tactical pen and I LOVE the way it looks its more of a dark silver but the red looks nice too good luck choosing a color you can ALL agree on and if not Wal-Mart sells spray paint EVERY day of the week :lolhammer:
