View Full Version : Chem lights in your bag-o-liquids?

I'm flying to the Philippines on the 27th and I will not be checking any baggage. I would like to take a couple of chem lights with me.

I figure to remove them from their foil wrappers and put them in my single, clear, quart-sized, zip-top bag plastic bag along with the (very little) rest of my liquids/gels/pastes.

Anyone think TSA would have kittens over them? I think they're pretty recognizable since kids use them on Halloween while trick-or-treating but you never know. They might be mistaken for some sort of biological weapon and I really don't want that.

Thoughts?

This is only speculation, but I think if they were not able to open the tubes to inspect for dangerous substances that they would not allow you to bring them on.

That's only a guess...seems like if someone were clever, they could devise a similar container for binary explosives. :(

Thoughts?

- Might want to leave them in the foil wrappers, TSA might feel better if they're in what seems to be a factory-sealed package.

- If they get confiscated (sorry, I mean if you surrender them), you're only out a couple bucks.

- Makers generally say keep them in the foil for longer shelf life.

Interesting. I could not find them on the TSA lists either allowable or not allowable. You can be our test case!

I would leave them wrapped in the factory foil for sure. They can ask you to unwrap them if they want. If they are are actual Cyalume brand the package has a pretty thorough listing of what they are and what, if any, hazards exist. Also, you can download an MSDS from Cyalume Technologies site.

Keep in mind that the agents at the TSA checkpoint can stop you from carrying on virtually anything with which they have an issue. You can argue and make your case---while you watch your flight take off.

How do you go to the Philippines with only carry on? A champion light traveler.

Test case? Heh. You all will come visit me in the Big House, won't you?

I now think it's wiser to leave them in their wrapper - thanks for the thoughts. I'll let you all know how it went when I get out.

I mean back.

How do you go to the Philippines with only a carry on? I have no idea. Yet.

I'm packing this (http://www.rei.com/product/754680)like a new OneBag (http://www.onebag.com/)disciple and hoping for the best. ;D

You might want to take a a krill light. It's a battery powered Chemlight without the liquid.

I flew to Vegas a couple months back and had TWO chem-lights in my messenger bag and the TSA did not have a problem with it. I did not do this conscientiously, I had just realized when we checked into our hotel room. It may be different flying internationally to a country with strong affiliations to
Al Queda and Islamic Radicals/ Fundamentalists.

Honestly, the TSA have some fluidity in the Allowable List that they might just snatch that from you. Your best bet, pack it in your luggage and recover when you land. Remember, there is always a person behind you that's trying to get through just like you. You might be "the one guy" that's holding up the line just because you want to test the TSA Policy.

Ammend Post! Keep them in your bag and bring a SASE with or be prepared to toss them out.

By the way, what will you be doing in the Republic of the Philippines. Check out a live taping of WOWOWEEE!

Can't speak to PI. Only been there by ship. However in the US, I carry two chemlights in my EDC purse (http://edcforums.com/index.php?topic=24612.0); one red orange for signalling & one white for illumination. I fly probably 10 times a year and have never even had a second glance althogh I have had my bag searched most every time.

Do you carry them sealed, in their original foil wrappers or out loose?

They stay in the original packaging. Never even thought to take them out.

Maybe a way to save some weight

Never thought about it until just now but I always have a chem light in my Battlelab SOF pack that I use for a carry on suitcase. Never had an issue. - George
