The wifey just found out that she's going to be sent to Vegas for training! I'm gonna be all by my lonesome while she's training her co-workers. Any EDC advice for walking down the strip and in-n-out of casinos? I already have some in mind, I'm hoping to find some other useful suggestions. Titanium Spork for buffets don't count!

As a resident I suggest water, good sunscreen and lip balm, and a hat for being out in the sun during the day. For being in the casino at night: a fat bank account, good luck and an ability to count cards discreetly. Seriously, it is windy, hot and dry here now. Drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids, cover up when outside and keep cash and valuable close at hand. A couple of things that she might want to have,: a flashlight (the hotels and casinos are very dimly light) and a note pad and pen (some of these places are ridiculously large and a note on where things are at can be handy) If she is staying on the strip, it is a pretty safe area, off the strip is another story. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Salty, close, but you still get points. :broke:
Gadget, any word on folders or multi-tools in the casinos? Thanks again, in advance!
We're definitely on the strip. Somebody's paying back some favors with some stays in one of the high-end monstrosities.

All joking aside, one thing I remember was a lot of walking, I mean a lot. The size of LV BLVD and the huge buildings distorts your perception of distance, you think a walk from one side of the street to the other will be quick and sometimes they are never ending. Not a big deal when your wearing sneakers, but a night on the town will start to kill your ladies feet making your night a living hell .

I would keep the basics, a flashlight,a small knife/tool, camera & some water. I don't recall any metal detectors to worry about, but there are cops and security everywhere on bikes, cars, foot, even segways. I felt pretty safe despite some VERY STRANGE people all around me.

Also, FYI it is against the law the flag a cab on the street, go figure in all places, you need to go to a cab stand, every casino has one.

Have fun and be safe, I have only been a couple of time, but there are lots of cool things to see there.

Metal detectors to enter the top of The Stratosphere.
Also knives/tools (considered weapons) and cameras are not welcome in the Colloseum theatre in Cesar's Palace when Elton John is playing - metal detectors.

Sunglasses when walking The Strip.

Wish her a great trip!

Take along a handheld scanner with "close capture" feature, to snag any
nearby radio transmissions. I think the Radio Shack Pro-83 or Pro-84 has
the feature if they still sell it. Uniden and Bearcat also make similar
products, but they're more expensive.

Vegas is supposed to be popping with all sorts of interesting radio
transmissions.

Off topic.....dont get too stuck on the Strip - Fremont Street is were its at! Cheap beer, street entertainment (bands, art, etc), light show. Freemont street is much more fun for less money (my opinion).

Thanks for all the input folks. Strangely, no one suggested a rubber band for all the "little flyers" they pass around on the strip.

water, water, water

believe me, everyone walking around has multiple bottles of water if they are smart, you get very thirsty very quick, and casinos make a fortune just selling bottles of water with the picture of the hotel on them

sunglasses are an absolute must, a hat is a good idea too, sunscreen and multiple pairs of comfortable shoes. flip-flops are not a good idea, the pavement gets extremely hot in the summertime, even into fall and flip-flops offer no support and very little protection for walking a lot, and you will walk a lot

Need to visit Freakin' Frogs by the UNLV campus (if its still open). Nice place for a pint.

Only thing I ever needed in Vegas is cash and credit. With that, you get what you need when you need it there.

Have fun and stay out of trouble (if thats your thing!!!!)!

Never saw a metal detector in any of the casinos I went to. For EDC, consider that you may end up playing all night, if you're anything like me. :) Eye drops, contacts, glasses, whatever you may want for a 12-hour poker binge.

JFI... You may need sunglasses at night as well... :slap: Enjoy your stay!!! :luck:

Is there any EDC Related stores to visit (possibly close to the strip)? Anyone? Anyone?

If you want to do any scorpion hunting at night, a little UV light will almost insure your success. <shudder>
It's the truth - they fairly light up under UV.

Have a great time and don't forget to say hi to my son.

Tink, if I see your son at the places where I'll be, you may want to have a sit-down :lolhammer:

KIDDING! Scorpion hunting may have some promise. I have plenty of down time.

My son will be the handsome 40 year-old playing baritone sax at one of the nicer places. You can catch him in Jersey Boys if you time it right. O0 Can you say 'proud mother?' And watch out -- he lurks here fairly often. (And he may try to hurt me if he notices this post.) Good thing I plan to gift him with some of toys I find here.

As for the scorpions - dark is the right time to search for them. Have a ball and stay out of those ba-a-a-d places. :luck:

***, Over? Against the law...oi...as a New Yorker when I see a cab I get a twitch to put my arm out and whistle regardless of whether or not I need a cab.

I just came back from a week vacation from vegas.

I had my usual EDC's including spyderco caly, rookie, BM mini grip, surefire e1b, etc etc

I had no problems what so ever.

My hotel had several exits and entrances onto freemont street which was very nice. I got to catch all the woodstock cover bands. One thing I was not too crazy about was alot of the homeless and drunks at freemont. I made sure to secure all of my valuables when standing in the crowds of the concert's. I also felt a tad safer with the pepper spray in my pocket :-X

As far as some EDC places to go I actually found pawn shops were really cool(first time being in one) I found some good stuff for cheap.
Also on Sahara Ave there was a really nice knife and sword shop that had TONS of stuff just about any brand. Most of their prices were MSRP so I did not purchase anything. The gunstore on west tropicana had several gun related gear, flashlights, knives, etc. The knives were mostly benchmade, some CRKT and a few others I cant seem to recall. They did have spyderco's but only the tenacious and all blacked out endura. Prices were not too bad. And hey if you never shot a gun before its the perfect time to. When I went I shot an MP5, UZI, and a shotgun(no pistols this time). Staff was very nice.

We rented a car so it made travel ALOT easier and its very easy to learn the streets quick

Hope this helped and enjoy your trip.

The Freemont/Downtown area is worth experiencing, but be careful. It's easy to go a block too far in the wrong direction. My first time there, my bud stopped me from possibly making a mistake. I started heading away from the lights and didn't notice a feral pack of locals watching and waiting for us to enter their territory.

Like others have mentioned, Downtown and the Strip/LV BLVD are pretty safe. Vegas knows they have to protect the tourists, or there won't be any, so the LEO's and security personnel keep a really tight reign on the local scum in the two main tourist districts. The old Naked City around the Stratosphere is pretty rough, I wouldn't recommend walking around there anytime.

I HUGELY second renting a car! For 20 or 25 bucks a day, it opens up a whole new world. I really enjoyed cruising all over Vegas and seeing the rest of the city. The BassPro Shop and some of the malls have some decent shopping too.

For a guy from northern Alberta, driving 100 mph through the featureless desert and feeling like you are barely moving is an great experience. Lake Mead is cool and the Hoover Damn is amazing. I love the 500 foot ride down the inside of the cliff, only to emerge into a dark stone cave with water dripping from the walls.

What I like most about Vegas is its versatility. You can spend a ton or a pittance. You can hit all the fancy shows and see the big names, or you can stick to a lot of great free stuff, or a combination. You can do outdoor or indoor activity. If you are a people watcher, you'll never find a more interesting place to do it. It may not become your favorite destination, but everyone should check it out once.

+1 on Lake Mead and the Hoover Dam, renting a jet ski is a blast, when I went there in 2000 there was no-one else on the lake. Also the rides at the top of the Stratosphere Tower are something else a switchback 1200 ft above the desert and the tower ride that accelerates upward faster than the shuttle.
Oh and take a neck brace, there are so many pretty girls working in the Casinos I didn't know which way to look next.

Wow, alot of good responses. I forgot I started this thread. The trip went well. I kept my EDC to a minimal/ rolling light set up.

The one thing I wish I took in account for was the harsh September Sun in Vegas. I had to grab some sunscreen at the ABC and carry with with me. I had some sunburn on ears, top of feet (I was wearing sandles and flip-flops), and nose.

I'm glad to hear Vegas is still open for business!

When my job starts and I find myself in that part of the country I'll visit again for sure!

I read an article somewhere (don't quote me!) that the Bellagio is facing hard times.

The prior year they made 4 billion dollars profit, but last year they only made TWO.

Not sure if you remember but my girlfriend likes to collect the strip flyers like baseball cards, when we were their for the rancid show we tried to trade with someone else for a better flyer. They just looked at us as we were laughing. We thought about collecting them and then selling a batch of ebay, for fun.

glad you had a good trip.

I didn't edc much but our hotel room was stocked with medical supplies in case the girlfriend needed a little hangover helper, mainly IV fluids, I know it isn't legel

 My wife and I collected a bunch of those strip-flyers for acts of ill-repute and took them back with us to California.

Then, at work, I put on my friends car for weeks on end! He was too embarrassed to ask who was doing it!

nice, that good.

I wanted to buy the tshirt off the guy who was handing them out but it had quite an odor to it. A combination of beer and sweat funk.

it would have been a cool shift to wear, I just don't know where to.
