This post was recently updated to repair links and update photos.
I recently updated this post so there is a lot of stuff that might have ended up being redundant, sorry but I was hoping to clear up some issues and help EDCers make a decisions on their best belt decisions.
Any questions, please feel free to email me (chute43@yahoo.com) or PM me here.
thank you
These are Brand New Black Nylon Web Belts made from military grade parachute harness webbing, sometimes referred to as a Smokejumper Belt. It is commonly worn by wildland firefighting crews from Hotshot, Helitack, to Engine Crews.
At times this belts have been hard to come across. It is similar to military rigger belts but with some improvement in comfort and design. The buckle holds strong and secure but quickly adjust when the time calls for it. Ruffian packs sell it for 24.95 but mine look better, his come with a weird patch. I have seen similar belt sell for over $30.00, Duluth trading company sells them for 24.95
The Webbing is rated at 6000lbs and the "V" ring Buckle is rated to 2500lbs. The webbing is military spec parachute harness webbing, which is why it has the contrasting color on its edge.
The belt is 50" long from buckle to tail, cut off what you don't need with a hot knife, or a razor knife and then seal the nylon back with a lighter. The belt is 1 3/4" wide.
I am a career firefighter and paramedic, I currently have a pair on my urban interface wildland pants and one on my civilian pants for everyday wear. I sew these myself now so that I can control the quality of each belt.
50" long x 1 3/4" wide
I accept paypal, they are 15.00 plus 4.00 to ship, and they ship out USPS first class. Multiple belts ship out USPS Priority Mail, for 5.25. I can put five belts in one Priority Mail envelope.
Email (chute43@yahoo.com) me what color belt and buckle combination you want, I will email you a paypal invoice. Just remember to include that you are a edc member and your screen so that I can quote you the lower price.
International shipping, I do my best to offer the lowest international shipping I can, just have patience cause those usually require a trip to the post office.
I have perfect feedback on ebay (offpistekw is my ebay name) and on amazon as well.
if you have any questions please email me here of my personal email at chute43@yahoo.com

As my hobby/business has grown I have expanded the number of belts that I build. More from the wildland fire community , The airlock or airloc belt. As the story goes USFS smokejumpers would remove the seatbelts from their jump planes, and fashion belts from them. These are pretty rare. They aren’t really good for CCW but very unique , durable.
30.00 plus 4.00 to ship. These will require an actual measurement of your waist line at the level you wear your pants, as always please don’t rely on a pants sizing
contact me for a photo
Next in my line up came my V ring Shooter’s belt which is basically a smokejumper of big steroids, nice and stiff for CCW but still wearable all day. These have a three layer design sewn and laminating together. I use a total of 5 total passes with #138 nylon bonded thread. Plus these have a Velcro that secures the free end. They have four inches of adjustment as well.
These are 30.00 plus shipping 5.00 for US mail shipping
From top to bottom
Black with silver buckle
Foliage green with black buckle
Coyote Brown with black buckle
Navy Blue with black buckle
OD Green with black buckle
All black with black buckle
Dark brown with black buckle(currently discontinued color though)
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff151/chute43/V%20ring%20Shooter/100_1824-1.jpg
Next at some request from EDCers is the Cobra Gun belt, same three layer sewn/laminated design suitable for CCW. The buckles are a little big and generally require them to be threaded like a normal riggers belt, but once in your pants you can utilize the click portion. The cobra buckle weighs 4 ounces has a very smooth action and 2500lb rating.
$50.00 plus 5.00 to ship(priority mail)

http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff151/chute43/cobra%20belts/100_1850.jpg
Due to more requests came the Cobra Riggers belt.
60.00 plus 5.00 to ship priority mail

http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff151/chute43/cobra%20belts/ODgreencobrariggersbeltwithfoliageg.jpg
Now in the line up comes from something for the EDCers pooch, using the one inch cobra buckle, utilizing heavy duty welded D ring hardware. These like most of my stuff is built to last.
New photos coming soon here
I usually have about a one week turn around times on most of the custom belts, while the smokejumpers are usually a 24 to 48 before they ship.

Chute43,
Looking at the pictures I have a question. Are these held in place with velcro like the instructors belts, or is it held by friction coming under and around the post and then under the edge of the buckle.
If these are "not" velcro, I may be interested. From your email, I'm assuming you have another to sell (i.e. this is not just a one off)?
Thanks!
Eric

These are not like the instructors belts , that are not intended for attaching to a rope work. Smokejumpers at the jumper bases would sew these in their spare time, using parts of parachute buckles and I have heard some used the seat belts out of an older model DC aircraft, from the way the story has been told to me. For years you could only get these from guys who sewed their own. My old room mate who is a captain on a Helitack crew contracts with a company to sew them for him. Basically they are just a belt intended to hold your pants up. And there is no Velcro but there is a belt loop. I have been using a pair on my civilian everyday pants as well as my personal wildland fire gear at work. And yes I do have a couple.

Shipping on two is actually five dollars cause I have to send them priorty mail because they are too heavy for first class with two in the package, I know cause I just shipped two to another guy in WA. If five dollars for shipping is okay with you, then you can paypal me the 35.00 and I will ship them out tomorrow.

Hello,
Good to see a fellow wildland guy! Did it for several years and loved every minute of it! (well, maybe not every minute...)
A quick question: how stiff is the webbing used?
Thanks and take care!

I have described these belts as the right combination of stiff ness(width) and pliablity(length wise) someone else asked me if I had a problem with the belt rolling over in the back and lately I have been wearing my on my civillian pants everyday and it has been super comfortable. I am actually a city firefighter but our city is surrounded by urban interface areas. And those damn pants are horrible, like 2 or 3 layers of nomex and once they get a little wet they droop. So I remember the helitack guys in yosemite wearing these and I have a friend who is jumper at the base in Redding. So I found a guy who make us some , so my crew got some and then the rest I am selling. I bulked my order with my old roommate who is a captain on a helicopter, that is why they are fairly cheap. Hope I answered your question, like I said flexible length wise and stiff width wise.

Kary,
Got mine yesterday...they look great! Again, really appreciate your doing this sale. I've always liked the style of these (and instructors belts) but just never been willing to spend $35 to get one! Ex-firefighter here myself as well, put in 4-5 years as a volunteer in Salisbury, MD before moving. Hats off to you guys still on the line.
Have a great weekend!

I am glad you, like it. I also have never understood the price of the "instructor's" belts. I teach confined space and technical rescue for the local college as part of the fire tech program and if you need something to clip into, you should just be wearing a harness if my opinion.
but on the positive note, I am glad you like it. I am going to sell another round cause we some more guys at my station wanting them. So for everyone who emailed me about more, give me about a week and then I will have more coming in.
enjoy your belt

I was gone a bunch over the summer, even though I am a city firefighter paramedic, I hold qualifications as a helicopter crewmember, so I with all the lightning fire in northern california. I spent my summer bumping from airbase to airbase. So anyone who emailed me, sorry. I recently stocked up, and I sell them for a little more over on ebay but for the edc people I still sell them for 15.00 plus 4.00 shipping with USPS first class shipping, multiple belt orders up to five belts shipping is 5.50 for usps priority mail shipping. Just email me and we can work out the transaction details. Once you know what you want, I can email you a paypal invoice. I can do overseas shipping but it will just take me a couple of more steps and a day or two.
Some people have asked me about the contrasting thread on the edges of these belts, these are made from military grade parachute harness webbbing and the contrasting thread is used to give you a visual reference incase the webbing is overloaded. The webbing is rated at 6500lbs and the belt buckle is all metal and rated at 2500lbs.

I shot most of the photos indoors except that one, which was in the heat of the hot california sun, so it made the webbing and buckle appear to be a little washed out. The buckles is the same as the rest if that puts it in prespective. The webbing is darker than it appears. Sorry for the confusion
thank you

Just a quick note, as many know I sell these cheaper to edc members. So when you email me please remind me you are a edc member and include your screen name. So that I don't misquote you a price. Still have plenty of belts for the most part but I have a huge shipment coming in at the end of this week or beginning of the next week. As fire season came to an end my sales kind of slowed down. But now sales really picked up.
Incase anyone wonders about some of the belt color combination. It took me and my old roommate who is a captain on a helitack crew to find someone that had the parts and someone to sew them, plus for a reasonable price. He had the idea of using belt color to show rank amongst his wildland crew. Since I operate as a paramedic for medevac mission of large campaign fire, like we had this summer, I got the blue belts- blue for EMS. So in a crowd, guys can figure out who the medic is (aka whos got the bandaids). The idea hasn't really taken off but maybe in time. The other combinations were just based on request from buyers. The firefighter websites sell much cheaper versions for twice the price.
thank you

thank you , I am glad you like them, I take great pride in doing my best to provide good customer service and satisfaction. I started selling these belts cause the only way for me to get one was to have one custom made for me. So I had to order a bulk order from a professional sewing shop. I believe in my belts and I personally wear one everyday in my jeans and when I am on the fireline.
My buddies helitack crew in northern cal, they wear different colors to show rank, which is why I had the blue ones made, since I am a paramedic and frequently assigned to different helitack crews on details. It is my buddies concept of using the belt color to show position and rank. His crew all wears the same color helmet since they are helitack.

Chute, I must have mistyped my email addy or some such nonsense. :dummy:
I haven't received an invoice, or email or anything.
It was most likely my mistake, I was using phone for email and the government computers at work to send the paypal. I might have screwed something up in the process. I can't check my personal email at work. So I had to make do, I just resent it. Sorry about that.
I am glad everyone has received their belts and liked them.

Any chance of a 1.5 inch belt?
chute43
12-08-2008, 10:50 PM
Nope sorry, the reason being my belts are only made from a specific grade parachute harness webbing. And I can only get these buckles for 1.75", they are out there in 1.5" but I just cant find a supplier. Duluth tradings belt made out of 1.5 but theres are around 25.00 before shipping. We spec-ed these out based on the original designed used by both military parachute riggers and smokejumper firefighters built on there on. I have a friend at the Redding California Smokejumper Base and he helped me a fair amount in making sure we were using the correct equipment. Most smokejumpers now wear a belt called the airlocke belt which is made out of an aircraft seat belt buckle , they are a bit pricey though. My price on the buckle pieces alone was 30.00.
The problem with using the "other" grade webbing is it gets slick and loosing some of its friction with time. My personal belts has survivied several large wildland fires and a busy season on the helicopter.
Unless my belt wont fit into your pants, I am sure you will be quite happy with it, and you dont notice its width. I also thought it sounded kinda wide when I was working on the parts.
thank you for your interest.

chute43
12-09-2008, 01:25 AM
This is the belt. I just couldnt get the parts cheap enough, for what my cost was going to be for just the buckle is what he is charging. I have one of his "man purse" that we use to keep our helicopter weight cheat sheets in, and the quality is great.
The buckle works similar to a seat belt buckle. Just not exactly sure. I had to make phone calls to the aircraft parts manufacturer to get the part numbers. And we still couldnt get them at a good price. I didnt like them cause they are a somewhat fixed length that is time consuming to adjust. I like the older style smokejumper belt so if I change which pair pants I am using I dont have to worry about my backside hanging out. I can just crank down my belt a little more.
But this guy is from redding and he makes a bunch of paint ball equipment and some stuff for wildland firefighters. I was pretty impressed by his quality. but I havent really look closely at the belts before. Most of these I have seen have been homemade by other firefighters.

All,
Last night I got my belt from Kary and I'm exremely pleased. I got black on black and am planning on getting another. The buckle is very heavy duty, but not as ridiculous as some buckles I've seen, wouldn't feel too good to get smacked with though =-) The webbing is very nice, good deep black color, not too shiny, but nice and smooth, there are tracers on each end of the webbing, look yellow or off white, I think they add a nice touch to the belt. I'm wearing it right now and it feels good. I think anyone would be pleased with this belt. Great bang for the buck. Right now it's holding my cell phone in a CountyComm PCC case, and will hold a few more things while I'm working. As if this could get any better, dealing with Kary has been exceptional. Communication has been quick and clear, shipping was very fast, and the belt was well packed in a padded envelope. It's probably because all Paramedics are awesome =-)

Say, do these guys make a version with a titanium buckle?
chute43
02-03-2009, 12:10 AM
I do not do a version with the titanium buckle, my belts are built around what the actual smokejumpers built for themselves, which means using real parachute harness hardware, so my buckles are solid metal, the titanium buckles you see on the Wilderness belts are a copy of the real parachute hardware(to the best of my knowledge), since they are only 1.5 inches.
I am a career firefighter and during the summer I wear my belt everyday, my belt shows no signs of wear. If you go on my ebay page and look at my feedback you will see that I have received continued compliments about the durability of my belts.

I'm very pleased with my belt. I've had it for a few months and it's been solid. I get comments on it on occasion, all good - wondering where I got it, etc.
The only slight, very slight issue has been a small wrinkle - not even a bend or fold-over - of the belt at the middle rear belt loop. I think some extra stitching in that area would stiffen it up enough to eliminate that from happening at all. I might take it in somewhere to see ehat can be done.
I'm happy with the product, and for the price you can't go wrong.

I wish I knew how to work with carbon fiber. I actually want to make some kydex ems shears holsters, but so far all I have done is read about kydex.
My belt does the same thing in the back but it hasn't ever really cause me any discomfort. I wish that was an easy fix though. I try and keep the price as low as possible which means less sewing. Meaning if you save some money on my belts, then you have more money to purchase more edc goods.
And El Verbo thank you again for the promotion, I love wearing my belt everyday, not only are they unique but they actually hold my pants up.

Do they not fit in 501's, sorry if it doesn't, like I said in another post, I really only wear Carhartt Jeans, if you haven't tried some you should, super comfortable, and ofcourse long lasting. Truely worth the money. I bought two pairs last year, and no sign of wearing out at all.Carhartt link (http://www.carhartt.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10101&storeId=10051&productId=32063&langId=-1&categoryId=10935)
But then again do you really want to take fashion advice from me. All my clothes come from what I call my welder collection of clothing. Even though I do go to school to be a paramedic and Firefighter, my AS degree is in structural steel and pressure vessel welding. Most of my clothes will out last me. So my smokejumper belts just kinda add to that.
On a different note, thank you again for your purchase, I am glad you like them.

Kary's right that the New Yorker appeals to EMS people. Looks great with the whole navy uniform, but is nice with other stuff. Dark enough not to draw attention but light enough to be distinctive and I like the plain metal buckle. I also have an all black one. Alternate between them.
As a firefighter a friend of mine purchased these for his crew, he had a over run in supply and with our wildland season already starting he asked me to unload them for him. These are professionally sewn in America.
50" long x 1 3/4" wide
I accept paypal, they are 15.00 plus 4.00 to ship, and they ship out USPS first class. Multiple belts ship out USPS Priority Mail, for 5.25. I can put five belts in one Priority Mail envelope.

These days most jumpers quit wearing this style belt for another extremely hard to find belt made from seat belt buckles out of a older model douglas aircraft. The belt is called an airlocke. I really don't like them because they aren't as adjustable as mine. My friend who is jumper at the Redding California base helped me find the pieces for my belts.

The tan ended up being a little different, it is the same spec, but I bought the spool blind over the phone. With so many variation of the coyote tan/ khaki I was worried. If I bought in a roll of 10,000 ft , I could get whatever color I wanted but I think the webbing would fill up my garage pretty quick. I got lucky to find someone that had a 100 yds left over from a contract. I am still working on finding other colors, next week I am going to talk to a local guy about doing some more sewing for me.
I hope you like the color/scheme though, you know me I am to please.

Chute,
I have one of your OD belts and love it. I need to replace my uniform underbelt, but the belt needs to be solid black (without the yellow contrast stiching), do you have any solid black belts? A black buckle would be best, but silver you be ok.

I don't have any without the contrasting stitching becuase, I use a specific mil spec webbing that requires that contrast as identification. To sound a little redneck, maybe use a sharpie to color them in. I do have plenty of black with black buckle but nothing without the stitching though.
The stuff without specific identifying marks ends up being cheap, usually thin, and the webbing I use has resin mixed in to make it more durable and stiffer, and the others dont. That is why I am careful of what I buy. I almost got lurred into a killer deal today , the webbing was 1/4 the price I normally pay but I check the fine print on their specs and it was 1/2 the thickness I use.
Sorry, I am dealing with some new webbing vendors and I may see if they have some extra but who knows.

Okay after a little reasearch and some quess work. I am pretty close to having a double layer belt. These have to be sewn by hand as opposed to the single layers which are sewn by computer. The guy who is going to sew these is currently out of the county but once he returns expect to see these in several different sizes, and in the following color combinations
Black with black buckle, black with silver buckle, coyote brown with black buckle, coyote brown with silver buckle and OD green with black buckle
They are double layer up until the part that passes through the buckle.
Not sure on the price per belt yet due to unknow sewing cost but I would expect less than 25.00 each, the price difference being due to them being sewn by hand.
These photos are of the coyote brown with silver buckle(the buckle I actually cut off some military surplus and polished it, to give you an idea of the life of the buckles, that buckle is vietnam era.
Let me know what you think?

Okay like mentioned before I have been working on releasing double layer smokejumper belts but before I have a batch made up in different sizes I am going to take orders for them to member of ZS, EDC forums and Gearjournal. They will custom cut for you. Because only one layer of webbing will pass through the buckle, I have to cut them to fit a little smaller than your waist size so I will need your actual waist size, not your pants size.
For the time being I will doing Black , OD green and Coyote Brown, I have both silver and black buckles so those interested just let me know either here, through a PM or email at chute43@yahoo.com
They will be 22.00 each plus 4.00 to ship. I am going to run a batch over to the sewing shop on Wednesday July 15th of next week. So if you are interested act now.
Once in production they will come in several sizes
These are photos of my personal coyote brown with silver buckle

I have , I just purchased my own sewing machine so that I can start to expand, my "business" I will still use sewing contractors for the final work but it will give me the chance to expand my line but by using contractors to sew the items, I save money and so does the customer.
The guy who is doing my sewing right now does a lot of military and law enforcement special unit custom work. And also it keeps the work in the united states instead of overseas or in mexico. I recently had a chance to out source some work to India but I had to decline due to my moral obligations to the US economy. As many also know I only purchase webbing made in the US to very strict standards military standards. Sorry didnt meant to ramble
My purpose in adding to the post today is to show my new belt that I got in yesterday.
This is coyote brown with black buckle and the price will be 16.00 off ebay.

What I was thinking was using the 1 3/4 buckle with a slide adjustment on one side, double layer for all of the inner belt. The black with black looks real good And with an coated D ring on the left side. I get my most of my stuff from a military sewing supplier in LA who has a better selection and a little faster service. I know of another guy who did one but he was pretty pricey. His version was around 60.00 I can come in below his price I am sure but not by much because the buckle is so expensive. I think I could put one together for you for 50.00 plus shipping which shipping would be as low as I can get it.
The belt would be double layer up to the point where it passes through the adjustment buckle.
Let me know and I can call my supplier in LA who always has better quality stuff, buckles like that will have different versions some made in the us and some usually made in india. If you wanted one I will make sure to find quality ones.

If you are looking for something a little less pricey but with a buckle, this is called the airlock belt. This one here I made for a test piece for a possible contract with a helitack crew that wanted custom belts.
This is coyote brown with a black buckle. It isn't a super heavy duty as the Cobra but also doesn't weight a ton either, the cobra buckles are heavy.
Otherwise like I said I can still build you a cobra belt, lets just work out exactly what you want and I will add your parts to my next order, and like I also said earleir my by guy in LA can get the military colors in the cobra buckle

Why the double layer? It ads stiffness to the belt, it more comfy to use with a single layer I think...
Still thinks the "cobra type" of buckle looks better and its also very durable.. I have a belt like this from before, but its way to stiff and thick to use as a every day belt, so never used it...
chute43
07-16-2009, 10:28 PM
The single layer is plenty strong, and flexible. I have been receiving lots of request for stiffer through the width for gun belt use, because the cobra buckle is big, the one you had prior was it the 1 3/4 or one of the smaller versions.
I should be able to get which ever one , using good quality webbing is the hard thing. I can control the quality of the webbing I use because I purchase by the spool.
I had been thinking of making a variation with the cobra, just let me know what you are thinking you would like and I will do my best, and I can the single layer cheaper because it wont require as much manual stitching.
If all you want is the 1 3/4 webbing (? color) with a quick release cobra with one side adjustable, maybe 50.00 plus shipping which might be as low as 3.50. Again most of the cost is in the buckle.
let me know and lets make you a nice belt

As for ambulance life, I miss it. I injured my back on a call in December, had a Spinal Fusion less than a Month ago, looking to get back in December to January. My system is pretty busy, runnning about 80000 calls a year in my coverage area (combined with the other district its about 170000 a year). Lots of nursing home calls, drunks, and bogus crud. But there is always that one call, the cardiac arrest save, the trauma vic that makes it, the preemie with an APGAR of 3 that perks up to 7 by the time you make it to the hospital. I just miss helping people.

If I left about a 4 inch tail , it would be like a normal belt and you can just run it under your pant's belt loop, plus I have these black elastic loops that are 1 3/4 that I used to put on belts but no one used them. But they would keep your free end controlled. I could attach two of them to the belt. Since you don't really have to adjust the belt often , I think that would work for you. And it would look pretty clean.

Illusion, your belt is done, a left hand single layer cobra belt. I left the elastic piece free to slide it is already pretty tight, so you can remove it if you don't need it or use it once the waist size is fixed. The all black looks good but that type of webbing has a softer feel to it, so it is better in double layer belts, thats my thought atleast

This is a new belt, similar in design to others on the market. I built this for a fellow firefighter. It uses a cobra buckle which after Illusion made me aware of how cool they are. I have now purchased a bunch of them. This belt uses 2 layers of type 13 webbing, sewn together with a double stitch. The attachment point is held in place by two seperate box Xs on both sides. To clean up the belts look a little I put the free or running of the webbing inside the waist band of the belt.

Hopefully this isn't a silly question, but how do you feed this new style of belt through belt loops? Just looking at the images, it doesn't look like the either end of the buckles would fit through standard belt loops. :D
chute43
08-16-2009, 02:07 AM
It takes a little wiggling(very technical phrase). The male end (which is the side without the attachment ring) of the cobra buckle will slide through you just can't do it in a hurry. I have built several without the attachment lately as well. Belt loops that are 1 3/4 minimum would be required for this one. Not really a quick donning item, but the cobra buckle is pretty cool, if you aren't familiar with it, it weighs 4 ounces is cut from (I believe) CNC grade aluminum. A similar belt(but used) belt just recently sold for 122.00 on a auction on ebay.

Not really, you are limited by the webbing and the buckle, I generally stick with the 1 3/4 buckles but they make a 1 inch cobra buckle, and jonestactical makes a 1 1/2 belt called the EDC belt and I could build it, if I built that for you, I would be ripping off his design completely. I just don't want to do that. He mounts 1 inch webbing on 1 1/2 webbing. I just dont think it too cool of me to rip off his work, he seems like a good guy and does good work. And he has those items in stock to the best of my knowledge.
sorry I couldnt help you out but I wouldnt want someone to rip off my work
I am pretty sure his address is www.jonestactical.com
sorry again
kary
No need to apologize. I wouldn't expect or want you to copy anyone's design and appreciate that you would rather direct me to the appropriate vendor... kudos for that.
I looked at the "EveryDay Belt" and it's a little much for me. I don't plan on carrying anything on it other than maybe at some point a multi-tool or flashlight sheath. I pretty much only need it to hold my pants up.... ha!
I'll send Jones Tactical an email to see if they can build me a lighter-weight version of the belt.
Thanks for the info!

The lighter weight is the issue, I atleast and I believe jones has found the same thing, that there isn't a inbetween for webbing in 1 1/2 it is either the scuba webbing which is what the edc belt uses or the stuff uses on backpacks. I have called several vendors and it is all the same. I just purchased some scuba webbing to line one of my cobra belts that the customer is going to use as a gun belt.
I didn't think you really would want me to copy a design, I just belt bad to turn down a possible customer and edc-er but on the otherhand it was jones design and he deserves the business.
good luck and maybe jones has had better luck.

Still loving my "Original" Smokejumper months later... Heck of a belt... carries my Blackhawk and Barkie every time I'm hiking. Arguably the best item I have found/bought from these forums.
Now, it's always hard on the pocketbook to see a great little company grow. $42 plus shipping for the new "Cobra" style? Are they double thickness all the way around?

Not wanting to sound like I'm promoting another forum but if you advertise your belts for sale in the maker's gear for sale section of Bladeforums I'd think you'd do quite well. I know a lot of tubby guys who need a good strong belt that won't stretch when the beer spills :)
I asked a knifemaker in ebay to join and sell his wares in forums and now he gets better prices and his blades get sold faster. I should have asked for a commission :)

The cobra belts are double thickness up to the point where it passes through the slide buckle. I add a third layer of a different type of webbing , I also laminate the three layers together with an industrail adhesive before sewing them together with #138 nylon bonded thread, which has a 16 lb tensile strength. I make about four pass on the final set up. Labor wise they require between 45 minutes and one hour to assemble from start to finish.
What I call the cobra gun belt, which is the riggers belt without the attachement ring, are 50.00 plus shipping, the going rate from other tactical sewing operations are 69.00 and up.
I know the price is a little spendy but you have to remember the buckles cost 30.00 each but my prices are lower than the rest out there, because I stilll work out of my house.

Got my belts :) They finally made it across the world to Malaysia.
They will outlast me I'm sure. Very strong and some of my workmates asked questions about my cobra belt. They were impressed with the details about the webbing strength and the buckle strength (I memorized them :)). They were especially impressed with the fact they were custom made for my belly!
Many people were surprised with the price for the regular smokejumper belts. I too am particularly pleased especially with the stylish (and unique, especially in Malaysia. Noone has one like my cobra buckle). Thanks Kary for the excellent service.
The ends of the webbing did unravel a little. I melted the ends further and chopped off the edges (made the free end less angled) and and dripped some superglue un the edges. I think it's fine now. Perhaps you might want to consider chopping the edges off? It makes it easier to put into the belt straps in my pants.
All in all I'm verily pleased. I'm gifting one to my little brother (who also has a belly problem like me) and I'm pretty sure he'll love them.

I was actually thinking about your order today, I am glad it arrived safely and I even more happy you like your belts. I had been toying with the idea of puttling a three sided taper on the end. I made your belt before I purchased my hot knife whichi will make that easier, sorry for the unravelling but I am glad it was a quick fix. I am also happy your coworkers are jealous, it is a good feeling. I assume your friend found the package using the number I hope.

Well I'm wearing the Cobra Belt for days now. Really cool cause of the questions I get asked. Also the belt feels comfortable and really easy to use and take off. One thing for Cobra belt owners, make sure the buckle is fully engaged. Sometimes only one of the copper (is it copper?) thingy engages and you need to make sure both copper thingy engages. However even with one copper thingy engaging the belt is still holding but I'm guessing with half strength. It is an easy thing to make sure the buckle fully engages and once fully engaged it is very very secure.
I'll definately be back for some more belts. Especially if they had the three sided ends. Thanks again for a wonderful service. O0

Actually the normal smokejumper belt in double thickness seems a good idea (more firm/rigid) but would it fit nicely in the buckle? Wouldn't it be too tight? If it works fine then I'd like to know how much it'll cost.

I only do the double thickness up to the buckle so that almost every one is a custom belt, it is the deck belt but with improvements. I do them for 22.00 each , I have to make myself a new one because I lost too much weight. I am building a couple today for some competitive shooters .
I will shoot some photos of them, with the three sided taper as well. Some of my designs are mine while otheres are you guys and some of the others out there.

Hope everyone likes it, so far this one has picked up in popularity with the CCW crowd, this belt in particular was belt for a IDPA competition shooter.

I just got my belt today from Kary. I got the double thickness rigger's belt w/ the cobra buckle and extended tie off point. Good quality work on Kary's part and he's a real pleasure to deal with. O0 I'm really happy. All the stitching is nice and straight, the layers all line up and it all seems to be quality material. I'll try to take pictures of it on and attempt to not make it into a porn shoot. I might have to get another one in a color a little less subtle so it stands out a bit as I got it in brown. ..maybe hazard yellow w/ red stitching.. ;)

i may have to get one of these built, Chute43, could you run a thin 1 3/4 inch webbing,(mil-w-4088 type12) inside a double layer cobra belt, as an abrasion buffer, to stop the buckle, and dring damaging the load bearing webbing ? much like a parachute harness is built ?
also, what thread are these sewn with ?

I dont have any type 12 but I have type 13, I havent seen how an actual parachute harness is built but from what you are saying like a liner inside the fixed end buckle, I don't think so because two layers won't fit through the cobra buckle. Unless you have seen it fit into a cobra, I never have though, I checked the specs real quick on type 12 and it seems pretty thin, but I just hadnt see it done on the cobra, some of the rappel harnesses the USFS use on their heli-rappel fire crews use a similar method to protect load bearing parts. I can order some type 12 on my next partial roll order to see what it is, and how thick is it.
It would ofcourse work on the V ring buckle or the old style rectangular slide buckles. And I could to it
As for thread I use #138 nylon bonded thread size FF , all final construction sewing is done in one stitching piece so there are no breaks in the stitching for the most strength, and I also try not to sew over prior passes on the body of the belt, and I try and space out the final construction sewing 1/32". I use a pretty tight stitches per inch. I make a total of 7 passes with the #138 on the full length of the belt
I use #69 nylon bonded thread on the velcro though, because it helps with making the velcro look smoother, but I do a double pass on it.
I hope that answers your question

Thanks for replying.
I havent seen the liner done with a Cobra buckle, but what i was referring too, is probably very similar to the way your fire crew harnesses are done.
if you wouldnt mind ordering a metre of so of the type 12 with your next order, it would be great to see if it will fit,
I will be ordering a belt from you shortly, i will send a PM to work out everything i would like.

I have had a roll of type 13 (which is all black)webbing laying around from a prior law enforcement order. Many of you know my original design for the "deck belt" has evolved and is becoming popular with IDPA shooters and hopefully the CCW guys. I believe the price is very competitve with 5.11.
I use my normal technique of two layers of 1 3/4 webbing another layer of narrower webbing sandwiched inbetween to stiffen up the center of the webbing. I also line the fixed bar of the buckle with Type 12 webbing to reduce wear on the webbing that wraps around it. No one I know of is currently doing this features. For adjustability they have 6 inches of adjustment.
Also I have upped my number of stitching passes to 9 , so that the stiffness is increased by compressing the webbing along its length.
At 25.00 (I know that is an increase from original price but I also now put double the labor time into the belt)plus 5.00 for US shipping and 12.95 for international shipping (10.95 for Canadian), I think it is a good deal.

Can you do your "Deck Belt 2.0" in all of the colors in your first post for $25 plus $5 shipping? Is this your suggestion for CCW?
chute43
10-25-2009, 01:00 AM
Yes , I can , I think I have almost all of the colors in stock, the dark brown is almost gone (it is a now discontinued color) but I am working to find more, there might be a guy in PA that has a half spool. And I am working on getting more of the khaki. And in most colors I have the matching thread and velcro except the blue and the brown.
and yes it is my suggestion for CCW, if the belt fails to meet your needs just let me know and I will refund the order. I estimate it takes over 10-12 lbs of force to start to get the edges of my V-ring shooter belt to roll. I have sold quite a few to CCW and IDPA shooters without any complaints and several have been repeat customers. I sold a similar belt to a sheriff's office based rescue team member.
Let me know and I will get you belt rolling. I am planning on getting fully caught up on orders on monday. I hurt my back in a car accident( I was struck from behind) so with some spasms and pain, I got a little behind.
For the price, I attempt to be very competitive with the big guys like 5.11, plus their belts are made out of the country, and mine are made in my garage, and all of my materials are US made because I purchase from the suppliers to the US military.
thank you

Just wanted to add my .02.
Got my two belts from Kary on Friday evening and I have to say that I really like them. These are the original smokejumper belts (brown and a black). Great quality. A little less stiff vertically than I was expecting/hoping for but a great belt. After Christmas I may have to break down and try one of his double thickness belts.
