I just read on Yahoo news that a woman with a 2in. silver pendant of a .45 was stopped by Canadian TSA and told she needed to check it. Something about gun replicas not being allowed on board. The CTSA rep said that it was a judgement call made by the agent. This fool used ZERO judgement. He/she just seems like a mindless automiton who doesn't THINK.

Like the guy in the UK who was wearing a Transformers shirt and wasn't allowed on the plane 'cuz Optimus Prime was shown with his blaster... :(
Where did common sense go?

It i s not legal to transport a lighter in the form of a gun on a plane at all.
Since it resembles gun, it can not be carried in the passenger compartment. Since it is a lighter it can not go in the checked luggage.
If you could empty and clean it of combustables I guess it could be checked.

You are now allowed to bring normal lighters in the passenger cabin once again (Zippos and regular Bic-types, but not jet flames -- and I don't see how that makes sense at all)
And as for checking lighters, even those with fuel in them can be transported in a DOT-approved Otter Box. I bought one, and I also have one that is cylindrical, made by Colibri.

I know this sounds crazy, but I feel as though the powers that are in place are trying to condition people. If you enforce some absolutely absurd rule for a while and then drop it after folks makes some noise over it, it'll make people feel like they've won something and won't question the stuff that seems justifiable. Just my $.02.

Not so crazy at all... I agree.
When you have to remove your flip-flops to go through airport security you really start questioning things. Oh, I also got a pat down because I was wearing a sweatshirt. So did other people. Ridiculous.
Without getting political, I'm reminded of that quote, "Absolute power corrupts absolutely."

it seems to me that in cases such as these, an agent must somehow cite the laws. we as passengers are becoming (and perhaps already are) more educated in terms of do's and dont's than the agents
this idea would never work, i know. but dreams can still be dreams

I love how they sometimes pat down old ladies with walkers and practically do a cavity search on them in the spirit of "fairness".

A lady that wears a silver pendant of a .45? :( Classy! She might have worn it to spur a reaction and make an issue of her civil liberties being impeded upon.

I thought this thread was going to fade away but since it's still going, here's my 2 cent rant: (Apologies in advance -I come to EDC Forums to get away from both politics and the 24 hour media circus.)
The problem is, at least in the US, since, and even before 9/11, we've created a culture of fear (Read The Culture of Fear-Glassner) for both real and imagined threats. I've said it many times before: the proper response to 9/11 would have been for the president to put every primary member in his cabinet on a different commercial airliner and have them fly coast to coast-or figuratively sticking our middle finger at the terrorists.
At this point, it's impossible to turn back the clock, and given the nature of crime in the US, I take comfort in having responsible, mature, armed citizens; as a personal responsibility to protect family and property.
So when I read about the woman having to check a 2 in gun pendant, I don't even bat an eye-this too will pass, I like to think.

I had a cigar cutter confiscated at Kennedy Airport because it looked like a bullet. :mob:

Who knows how much practical firepower it has but maybe - just maybe - there was a tiny little bit of reality to go along with the power trip way up north.

I read a story about the same thing happening to a kid with a GI Joe. It had a gun so it was a threat! >:(

gun pendant, yes its a pendant! but like all products of the future things get smaller and smaller. One day I wouldn't be surprised to hear that a miniaturized gun make its way on a pendant or ear ring. As for patting down little old ladies, they are not helpless nor are they innocent. I wouldn't be surprised also to hear if a little old lady with a walker which has empty legs filled with anything you can think of. You may think i am exaggerating but things can happen and lets say that pendant was a little more lethal and the agent let her though. crap happens, the 5hit rolls downhill and whos shoulder does it land on?? who gets fired ?? You and I will sit and say OOOOH

TSA's job is to ensure the barn doors stay closed in case the cows come back!!

years ago, i was told to throw away my demilitarized bullet keychain or else i couldn't go on the plane. I said to them, "You know this is demilitarized and can't be fired, right?"
Them: If you want to get on the plane, throw it away and stand at the back of the line.
Sheesh. Idiots.

I do think you are exaggerating. If a TSA(or anyone) can't tell the difference between a functional miniature firearm vs a cast piece of gold that has no moving parts and was made to resemble a firearm then they are an idiot and are probably incapable of their job. As for your statement that little old ladies are not helpless or innocent; if you weren't kidding you are extremely paranoid.

Two things:
1. "No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people"
I wouldn't be surprised also to hear if a little old lady with a walker which has empty legs filled with anything you can think of.
2. That sounds like an awesome way to EDC when you turn 70. Just carry around a walker with a sword, kubotan, sjambok or something similar hidden in the handle. :D
