dear edc-fans,
i thought about to travel this summer.perhaps in a warm country;-)
but what tool/knife should i take with me?SAK or Leatherman?

my thoughts:

-big blade for food preperation in the room(bread, butter etc.)
-can opener/bottlelopener(foods)
-scissors are often needed and personal care)
-tweezers(personal care)
-needle(yes,this little item is sometimes not replaceable)
(-saw, when you go camping)

there was a situation when i need neddlenose plieres to bring the heater in my room to work,a take my cheapo-leatherman out and fix it.
so is a leathemantype tool the best for traveling?

what else could be needed?

Sounds like you need a Leatherman Wave! http://www.leatherman.com/products/tools/wave/default.asp

You might want to pack an actual sewing kit (instead of just a needle) in case you need to make some quick repairs on your clothing/backpack(s).

Also, a corkscrew would be nice to have handy...

Either a SAK or a Leatherman would work well for traveling. I'm somewhat partial to my Leatherman Wave and always have it with me on the road. One time I checked into a hotel for the night and went into the bathroom to wash my hands... only to find the hot water had not been turned on since this room was in a recent addition to the hotel. Using the pliers on the Leatherman I had the hot water on in about 30 seconds.

Leatherman is more work-tool and SAK is more EDC-tool. I would go with a SAK and a small flashlight of course.

With lots of luggage, Swisschamp and Leatherman Core. Traveling light, Juice CS4. Everywhere, home or away, Vic Rambler comes along, too.

If it's sharp, it it sorta resembles sharp, or if it's "scary-looking", it must be checked.

Personally, I wouldn't risk any Atwood tool by trying to carry it on; even if it doesn't have a sharp edge, some TSA shrub might decide they like it, and tell you it's prohibited just so they can liberate it from the confiscated bin.

See the thread titled "Flying with Small Prybaby (http://edcforums.com/index.php?topic=9801.0)" where people have so far been recording ZERO problems carrying small non-edged Atwoods onboard. With so many reports of people carrying their Atwoods without problem, I think your risk of losing an Atwood is small. Peter Atwood has said that he is unaware of any confiscations after a short period following 9/11, during which a few of his tools were disallowed. I carry my steel gasbaby through dozens of airports a year (sometimes, a month) with not even any interest expressed so far. Honestly, TSA are not the thugs and thieves they are sometimes made out to be.

However, if it has an edge, no matter how small, you need to check it as it will be prohibited.

I think it's a risk either way. Baggage handlers pick and choose. :luck:

I bring an inexpensive SAK like a Victorinox Explorer.
If I'll be camping, I bring my Swisschamp that has my full name engraved on it.

I keep a sewing needle and some thread inside my SAK:

Wrap the needle in some paper, and wrap the thread is around the paper.
It fits nicely under the bottle and can opener.

Can come in handy in case of wardrobe malfunction :)

Other stuff I stash inside my SAKs include

solder
fine insulated wire.
piece of airmail paper folded up really small. The SAK has a pen, it should have paper.
