Howdy folks!

Me and the missus will be heading to Mexico in the early summer and I was wondering what everyone's opinion / experience is regarding the EDC of knives there?

I had planned on bringing my Necker if for nothing else but to open bottles and cut limes but I had heard that if you're found with even a SAK, Mexican police can hit you with a weapons charge! I suppose it's no different than the police here where the issue will be "intent" but I'd rather not spend any time in a Mexican jail.

Can anyone shed any insight?

TIA.

I was down in Juarez about 2 years ago; I'm sure you'll be taking the missus to more scenic places than that; Juarez is borderline third world.

In any case, I don't think you'll have any problems with a necker. You'll get more hassle trying to take it on an airplane. Based on my experience there, if you get into trouble down there, possession of your necker will warrant an extra "fine" but no more, if you understand what I'm saying. So I think a complete non-issue unless you get tanked and start picking fights with locals. I'd wear a necker down there.

Enjoy the marguaritas and have a great vacation.

I have no personal experience, but I've heard from a friend it wasn't such a big deal, as long as you don't bring a gun, you won't get thrown in jail ;)
But i suggest bringing something inconspicuous, same as here. Don't peel your apples with the biggest baddest folder/fixed blade you have.
Sak's seem to do well pretty much anywhere, and multitools aren't seen as possible weapons either.

Thanks for the tips.

It's a tiny, Dogfish necker. The blade is only 2 1/4 so it's fairly unintimidating. I don't plan on flaunting it but I just didn't want it's casual presence to trigger some posse-like response from any locals.

I hope to give it lots of work cutting limes and opening bottles. :D Thanks again!

I brought my SAK Tinker and Kershaw Double Duty. I wanted knives that were cheap enough that they could be replaced and I wouldn't cry if I lost them. Plus the SAK is univerally recognized at pocket knife/tool. This was in Cancun. I had no problems. Don't forget to pack and carry plent of ammodium A-D.

Keep a low profile and enjoy yourself. Did some protection work down there a few years back. No problems with the police if you did not make a grand stand of your presense there!.....The water now, maybe you need to pack something for that extreme! ;D

I gotcha! Sound advice!

We're trying to head someplace more remote and away from the All-Inclusive chaos that has become prevalent lately. We're fairly pysched since the rooms are right on the beach but without A/C! Ah well.. we wanted to rough it a bit. The AIs are great for like a honeymoon or somehting but, IMO, there's something to be said about have a modicum of discomfort when you travel to exotic locales.

I'm not arming to the teeth but after this input, I think I'll take my necker, a SAK and an escrima stick.
